I really wanted to like this book. The premise encompasses all the things that I love to read. I love fantasy, especially fantasy that features a kick butt heroine. And a kick butt heroine with deadly skills? Even better. I also liked that this book has Asian influences. And honestly, I thought the fact that it was being compared to Graceling, which I have read and loved, and Eon, which I have not yet read but hear great things about, was a GOOD thing. There are definitely some similarities to Graceling. Like Katsa in Graceling, Prophecy's heroine Kira has a special power, she can sense (smell in most cases) a disguised demon. She is the only female warrior in the royal army and is the personal bodyguard of her cousin, the prince and heir. And like Katsa in Graceling, her abilities frighten people and, as a result, she is shunned within her kingdom.

But that is where the similarities end. Prophecy is an interesting story but as I was reading I kept feeling like there was something missing. Even with all the action scenes, and there are many, I felt as if I was reading a chronicling of an adventurous journey, but not living it alongside the characters. When I'm reading an action/ adventure, especially one in a fantasy setting, I want to be caught up in the book. I want to feel like I am there, fighting alongside that kick butt warrior, facing the challenges, and journeying along on whatever quest has been undertaken. But unfortunately, Prophecy didn't elicit any of these feeling in me. It lacked emotional depth. It lacked heart.

Now to be fair, there were some aspects of the book that I liked. I liked the descriptions of the demons. They were pretty atrocious and scary. I liked that they could conceal themselves within a human host and only Kira could pick them out in a crowd.

I also liked the Asian mythology that was incorporated into the story. I understand that many of the customs and language are Korean inspired and I did appreciate that this lent an exotic feel to the book.

There is the possibility of a love triangle. And I admit to kind of liking the bad boy/ possible evil guy Shin Bo Hyun the most. He's kind of a nasty character but of the two possible love interests, he is the one I found to be most intriguing. Probably because the other love interest, Jaewon, while sweet and attentive, was rather bland and boring. Shin Bo Hyun may not be the most moral of characters but the fact that I was able to feel that way about him was a small victory because I felt so little for all of the other players.

As far as story goes, it moved forward at an okay pace, but again there was a lot of telling and not showing. A lot of "And so they set out for the mountain range. Ten days later, they arrived..." There is a big reveal of sorts in the book, but it was something I had already figured out well in advance so it was anticlimatic.

So in closing, Prophecy was a disappointment to me. The comparisons to Graceling (and Eon) made me want to read this book but in the end they were only surface comparisons. Whereas Katsa was a fully fleshed, complicated, emotion- filled character (in addition to being a bad ass warrior) Kira, and the other characters in Prophecy felt stiff, flat and lacking in depth. I think that some readers may feel differently than me after reading Prophecy, but in my case, this one didn't quite cut it.

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) Uh oh. What are you going between?

Heather A 2.5 and a 3:( It was disappointing to say the least.

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) Oh no! And we agree a lot. My dreams, they are crushed.

Oh, I'm sorry! Don't let that sway you though! It could just be me, you should definitely try it out for yourself :)

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) Of course! If anything, it usually helps to go in with lowered expectations.

Ha! YES, that's the spirit:)

Steph Sinclair It's funny you mention the love triangle because I thought (view spoiler)

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) I totally thought it was a bluff.

Heather @Steph: Yeah, I think it's a bluff too. The whole thing was mentioned so quickly, and vaguely, I had to re-read that part after Kira mentioned that to her uncle. I think it's all a ruse and there will be more in the remaining books.

@Christina did you get a chance to finally read it? What did you think?

Steph Sinclair Okay, that makes sense. It did go by fast. Then again, where was he in the last 25% of the book? *scratches head*

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) If this were the biggest problem with the book, I would be so happy. It never even occurred to me that he was dead. Then again, I was mostly skimming at that point, so who knows.

Steph Sinclair LOL, it does seem like a small issue compared to everything else. But when she mentioned that at the end it made me go, "Oh, yeah. Where is that little punk anyway?" Ha.

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) I still liked that little punk more than any of the good guys but Jaewon. He was second closest to exhibiting a personality. O_o

Steph Sinclair I was so confused with Shin Bo Hyun. He was the only one where I wasn't sure if he was entirely evil or had a chance for redemption. She left his character very open and then he kinda disappeared altogether from the story. I guess I'll never know.

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) Yeah, some things he said were kind of awesome, but he kept listening to his douchebag father. Which made some amount of sense, what with how important family is in Asian culture, but still. Again, that would have been better SHOWN. The only reason I know that makes sense is because I have familiarity with Asian culture, making Shin Bo Hyun more complex. If I didn't know, I would think he was evil outright.

Maybe someone will post a spoilerific review of book two, so that we can find out what happens?

Steph Sinclair I hope so. I kinda want to know what happens of him! Unless one of us decides to be the sacrificial lamb... lol.

And I agree. I knew family and honor was important because of the mangas I've read, but yeah, would have liked to see that shown and woven into the story.

Heather I think he's got redemptive qualities. He seemed to indicate his loyalty to his uncle but not to the demons. If he is alive and his uncle is gone, where does that leave him now? Unfortunately I doubt I'll read further to find out either. So yeah, I'm w/ Christina. Maybe we'll find out through someone's spoiler-y review:)

Christina (A Reader of Fictions) Errr, uncle, right. Not father.

Also, I claim not it on the sacrificial lamb thing. *puts finger on nose*

That leaves you, Steph!

Steph Sinclair Good points, Heather. I wonder how Kira would view him then.

I don't think so, Christina! LOL.
