Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Yay, first two books of the year read! One historical romance and one Amish novel done :)

message 5: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) | 1411 comments Rachel, since you are on a historical fiction kick, have you tried any of the Love Inspired Historical books? They are all under $4 for the kindle too. I grabbed several and I am hoping to get to them soon.

message 6: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I haven't actually, but that's a good suggestion - they all seem to be around £2/3 on Kindle here. I'm looooving my Kindle, so handy for travelling. Any LIH recommendations or should I just see what takes my fancy?

message 8: by Janet (new)

Janet | 153 comments I have tried for years to enjoy the Love Inspired books but to no avail. Same with Historical - thank goodness there are enough other books out there for me to read.

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I've read one Love Inspired Suspense and really enjoyed it but read another regular Love Inspired and found it rather uninspiring. I'll have to check out the Historical line and see what they're like.

For some odd reason, there aren't any LI books past September 2009 on Kindle in the UK - bizarre! But thanks for the list, I'll check some of those out.

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) One more done! And amended my challenge.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Another book finished! Looking forward to starting Sarah's Garden next.

message 12: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments You might be able to find Homespun Bride free.

message 13: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Thanks Kristy, I just got it free from Amazon :)

message 14: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments Your Welcome.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Finished Sarah's Garden. I've also been reading Doctor in Petticoats by Mary Connealy which I hope to finish tomorrow as I have a 90 minute bus journey back home as it's inter-semester break!

message 16: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Doctor in Petticoats is finished! Think I'm going to read another Amish book next, since I have so many :)

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) So I picked up A Plain and Simple Christmas: A Novella last night to read in bed and finished it this morning. Only took a few hours to read but was a really sweet story. I didn't think it was quite up to the standards of Amy Clipston's other books but I'm never normally a fan of novellas anyway. I'd recommend it for Amish fans for next Christmas, though! A sweet story about forgiveness and I'd love to hear more about some of the characters, especially Kathryn and Amanda.

I wish I could read a book fast like you do Rachel. I am reading faster when I read from my Kindle. Last year, I didn't even read one book a week. This year I've already read 5 books.

message 19: by Rachel (last edited Jan 29, 2011 05:22AM) (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Thanks, Kristy :) This book was actually really short, and and quite small in size so anyone could read it in a couple of hours! I don't normally read so many books but I've got 2 weeks holiday from university right now and nothing else to do. When semester starts back my reading will probably slow down again.

Well done for reading 5 books already! What's your target for 2011?

message 20: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Another book read, I love intersemester break! My reading may slow down a bit next month. I think January's been a good month so far, all of my books have been at least 7/10s.

message 21: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) 9 books read in January, yay!

Camille, have a safe trip to Spain. I pray

message 24: by Diane U (new)

Diane U (djuseless) | 1411 comments You kicked some reading butt this month Rachel!

I'm impressed that I managed to read one a week with my paying quilting projects. I just have too many hobbies and not enough time. Boy, work does get in the way! LOL! But it helps fund everything!

message 25: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Thanks so much Terri. Prayers are always appreciated. I honestly get so ancy on long plane flights because my knees hurt if I have to keep them bent for that long, but I am so glad to have an excuse to just read and read (and read and read!!)

message 26: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Have fun in Spain, Camille!

I did indeed kick some reading butt this month! Very likely due to my 2 weeks holiday from university. Classes start back on Monday so my reading may slow down, but the year started well and that makes me happy. I need to make sure I balance reading for pleasure along with reading for classes otherwise I'll forget how much fun it is to read something that I enjoy!

I loved the whole series, Rachel. When I finished the last one I truly felt like I knew the entire family and that I was going to miss them terribly.

message 31: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) It's definitely my favourite of Beverly Lewis's series! Have loved every single book so far. I have #5 at home but I couldn't fit many books in my suitcase coming back to Uni. My parents are coming to visit in a few weeks so I'm going to ask my mum to bring it up so I can finally finish the series :)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Thanks! I've read some really great books lately.

message 34: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments I read Abram's Daughter's through book 4. I put off reading book 5. Have so many books to read.

message 35: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I had a big gap between #3 and #4, I think I read #3 back in June! So I'll probably read #5 soon since I own it and then I'll have finished a whole series. I never used to like reading books in a series but it feels quite satisfying when you're finished with one. And a lot of Amish books are series books.

message 36: by Rachel (new)

Non-Fiction book that I just finished reading is: The Devil in Pew Number Seven. I really enjoyed it and I also enjoyed Son Of Homas; they were both non-fiction Christian based books.

message 38: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I'm adding Doctor Faustus and Other Plays although technically I only read Doctor Faustus. Not exactly cheating as academic texts are more of an effort to read, right?

message 39: by Camille (new)

Camille (camlovesraptors) | 802 comments Not cheating at all!

message 40: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Yay, glad you agree! I'm reading a play a week this semester and I'm hoping that I'll still manage to fit in some "fun" reading alongside Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams and so on. For some reason, plays seem to be faster reads than novels.

message 42: by Kristy (last edited Feb 15, 2011 09:11AM) (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments Doesn't that count as 3 books if you read all three? i would count it as 3.

message 43: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Kristy wrote: "Doesn't that count as 3 books if you read all three? i would count it as 3."

I think I'm going to count it as one for now as it was the same size as a regular paperback, I think each novella was about 130 pages? It'll totally confused my GoodReads Reading Challenge page as it only counts as one on there!

message 44: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Finished Raider's Heart by Marcia Gruver this morning, now need to get on with some university reading and start Richard II so that I understand it before my lecture on Monday.

message 45: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Just finished a lovely novella, Hometown Bride by Jillian Hart. It can be downloaded from the TellHarlequin website here:

https://www.tellharlequin.com/MediaSe...

message 46: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) King Lear done! Can't say I enjoyed it as much as Shakespeare's other plays, despite it being one of his most popular.

message 47: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Okay, I'm now up to #20 - crazy! I don't think I've ever read this many books before by the end of February. Admittedly, there are a few short plays and a novella thrown in here.

message 48: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Totally forgot, I read Restless Hearts by Marta Perry two days ago and forgot to add it. Need to write a review soon.

message 49: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments I am up to 20 books too. Never read this many this short of time. Last year I read 30 books.
