In the high-stakes world of Tinseltown, are we guilty of putting all our eggs in the basket of box-office draw as the ultimate yardstick of a film’s success? It’s admittedly a bit disheartening. Sure, a billion-dollar movie grabs the headlines and dominates conversations, but instant financial success is far from the whole enchilada. Take, for instance, Blade Runner. Ridley Scott’s helmed flick has woven itself into the fabric of science fiction culture, albeit with a bumpy start.

With a backstory chock-full of personal spats, and spurts of creativity, it’s no wonder the film commands a cult following today. Yet, let’s not forget that its initial reception was as mixed as a bag of trail mix. Critics were split on their opinions, and Ridley Scott found himself at loggerheads with one New Yorker film critic who didn’t...

Much has been said of the overwhelming ingenuity of Jean-Luc Godard’s early films, but less so about just how well the director knew how to work around budgetary limitations. Alphaville, a dystopian sci-fi noir set in an Orwellian world of omnipresent surveillance run by a malevolent artificial intelligence, sounds at first blush like a large-scale work filled with the sort of macro world-building one typically sees in blockbusters. But Godard, working with next to no resources, captures the oppressiveness of totalitarian government through the claustrophobic conditions of repressed citizens. Ordinary Parisian streets and buildings are captured as they are, though in inky shadow, so that a certain kind of present-day dilapidation comes to suggest futuristic social decay.
Godard takes private detective Lemmy Caution and illustrates Alphaville’s themes of social tension and incipient fascism by demolishing the man’s image. Godard secured Eddie Constantine, who had already played Caution...

Jim Carrey may have been a comedy veteran for more than 30 years having totally transformed the genre and bringing a lot of iconic comic characters to the screen, but some of his movies stir up a feud to this day.
Though one particular film dates back to 1994 when something that was quite normal now seems offensive, the actor’s opinion about one controversial moment in the movie hasn’t changed over the years — and this is what infuriates everyone the most.
The actor’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was released 30 years ago and, apart from contributing to Jim Carrey’s skyrocketed career, became a box office hit grossing more than $100 million with the initial budget of only $15 million.
The critics were harsher though, giving the movie 47% on Rotten Tomatoes — and a major reason for that may be the scene that meets all the intolerance criteria right now.

Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order is the third film in a trilogy that The Asylum began in Ape vs Monster and continued in Ape vs Mecha Ape. Or more likely the third film in a series that will last as long as there are megabudget Kong vs Godzilla films to provide inspiration for their mockbuster franchise.

As the saying goes, ‘every great man is inspired by another great man to reach their full potential’. Well, this sentiment could not ring truer than in the case of Gene Hackman & Kevin Costner.
For the most part, viewers recognized Costner from the hit drama series Yellowstone, but he was popular throughout the 1990s for other roles as well. Beginning his career as an extra in low-budget productions, he progressed to more mainstream roles in acclaimed flicks, including Dances with Wolves and No Way Out.
Kevin Costner in Yellowstone
Besides, he has shown a tremendous amount of endurance. Costner got up and over the critically panned films Waterworld and The Postman, which could have easily ended his career. And later, he spellbound audiences once again with his exceptional Yellowstone performance on the Paramount Network.

It may be a mystery to famed director David Lynch that Patrick Stewart was an acclaimed actor when the latter showed up on the set of his 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Well, sometimes directors have a clear vision of the ideal actor for a role, while other times, a happy accident can result in unexpected greatness. Such was the case with Lynch’s original 1984 Dune adaptation, in which he erroneously cast Patrick Stewart in a role that was meant for someone else.
Yes, Stewart, 83, inadvertently obtained the role of Gurney Halleck. In the process of replacing Aldo Ray at the eleventh hour, the director erroneously cast another Patrick Stewart.
David Lynch’s Dune 1984
Aside from being a financial disaster and receiving negative reviews, the film has developed a cult following over the years, and this intriguing casting mishap is just one of the many oddball tales surrounding its creation.

When it comes to celebrities and those who live inside the gates of Hollywood, it would seem that the skeletons in their closets find a way out eventually. The mightiest fall the fastest and those who were known as the kindest, possess the most darkness. Unfortunately, very rarely is someone exempt from this, and Jim Carrey was not fortunate enough.

A few days ago, Legendary Entertainment revealed that Denis Villeneuve has started with the development work for Dune 3, aka Dune Messiah. The sequel, Dune 2, received a great response from the audience worldwide. The sci-fi fantasy film is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune movies. It stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Austin Butler and others.
In Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, Timothee Chalamet plays Paul Atreides. When the movie was announced a few years ago, everyone was worried that it would be a good watch. In 1984, David Lynch also made a movie based on Frank’s novel. However, the film performed poorly at the box office, and even the audience wasn’t happy with Lynch’s adaptation.

When Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, the folks at The Asylum quickly put together a mockbuster called Ape vs. Monster, which featured a giant chimpanzee battling a giant Gila monster (after both creatures were enlarged by consuming a mysterious substance leaking from a space capsule). A sequel called Ape vs. Mecha Ape followed in 2023. Now the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in theatres, and The Asylum will be giving their mockbuster Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order a digital and theatrical release this Friday, April 5th. Looking back at Kyle MacLachlan's career today, there's no denying that he's a great actor. Not only did he give a beloved performance as FBI agent Dale Cooper in the mysterious drama series "Twin Peaks," but he also went on to play two different versions of Cooper (or possibly three) in "Twin Peaks: The Return." He's also impressed mainstream audiences with his deranged portrayal of The Captain on "How I Met Your Mother," not to mention his recurring role as the wacky mayor in "Portlandia." And of course, who could forget that "Law & Order" episode where MacLachlan's character publicly shoots a child for totally justified reasons? The clip goes viral on Twitter every month or so, mainly because of how delightful it is to watch MacLachlan completely sell the ridiculous material the writers gave him.
But back when he was filming David Lynch's better-than-you've-heard 1984 adaptation of "Dune," however,...

What does it take for a movie adaptation to transcend its source material? Many a filmmaker uses a book as a blueprint (whether or not they read it in its entirety) but take creative license to put their own unique stylistic and/or thematic spin on what is necessarily a much more visual story than the original one on the page. Often that’s taking a key character—whether a comic book antihero or an unnamed book protagonist—and giving them an entirely new backstory or quest. Or choosing a different point of view that opens up new storytelling avenues. In some cases, book and movie follow the same premise but diverge wildly at the end… or they do reach the same narrative conclusion, but on radically different paths that will leave you with very different emotional reactions as a viewer.

While most would say The Untouchables is the movie that made Kevin Costner a star, in many ways, Orion’s No Way Out solidified his stardom. The film was shot before The Untouchables, with him scoring the leading role after being cast by Lawrence Kasdan in the Western classic Silverado (as a way to make up for cutting all his scenes from The Big Chill). No Way Out was the first time he headlined a big film on his own, and it was the perfect showcase. If gave him a chance to do action, drama and romance, with his backseat love scene with Sean Young noted as one of the steamiest in Hollywood history up to that point.

This article contains light spoilers for Dune: Part Two.
Even the biggest fan of David Lynch‘s original Dune movie from 1984 has to admit the (unintentional?) comedy that occurs when Chani (Sean Young) pleads for Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan) to “tell me of your homeworld, Usul.” In the very next scene, the two are in the throes of passion, suggesting that “tell me of your homewold, Usul” is a pick-up line with the power of the Voice.
Believe it or not, the name “Usul” is not some Lynchian term like “Garmonbozia,” something he made up during transcendental meditation. Rather it comes directly from the Frank Herbert book he adapts. Similar to “Muad’Dib,” Usul is a name that the Fremen give to Paul, this one meaning “the strength of the base of the pillar.” But whereas Muad’Dib refers to Paul’s relationship within his Sietch (as well as desert mice!

Like the piscine Guild Navigator who gets wheeled out in a tank at the start of the movie, David Lynch‘s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel Dune is neither fish nor fowl. Lynch gets to play with some rather dense world-building, but Herbert’s critique of charismatic leaders gets pushed to the side while the demands of ’80s sci-fi fantasy don’t allow the director to create what would later become his signature dream states. As a result, Lynch’s Dune pleased no one, least of all Lynch himself. And while the film has its fans, especially in light of Denis Villeneuve‘s more faithful blockbuster, it remains an outlier in both Lynch’s oeuvre and in the history of Dune adaptations.
Still, the legend goes that if studio meddling and post-production issues not come to bear, Lynch would have been able to put more of his stamp on the sequel Dune II.

There are storied casting what-ifs that make us genuinely wonder how different a movie would have been had X gotten the role over Y. Usually it’s tough to even picture anyone else even being considered. Take Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns, for example. She redefined the character for a generation and still remains the ultimate version of Catwoman. And to think Catwoman could have been Sean Young, who ended up redefining how to botch a campaign in spectacular fashion.
One of the oddest attempts in landing a role for a movie came in Sean Young’s infamous shot at sealing the deal as Catwoman for Tim Burton, but the director wouldn’t meet with her. To up her chances, Sean Young went on Joan Rivers’ talk show in 1991 decked out in a homemade Catwoman costume, playfully yet menacingly calling out “Timmy” for not returning phone calls. And while the...

Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever by Matt Singer (G.P. Putnam’s Sons)
As an adolescent in the early 1990s, one of my Sunday night rituals was recording that week’s episode of “Siskel & Ebert”––it aired late-night in Buffalo, NY––and watching it the following day. The internet was in its infancy, so the reviews of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert were both a lifeline to what was happening in film and a cinematic education. It is no exaggeration to say that I learned how to discuss movies thanks to Gene and Roger. For my generation, then, the release of...

Some movies just don't seem to age, and "Blade Runner" is one of them. Aside from the fact that the film is one of the most influential sci-fi flicks in cinema history, thanks to the efforts of director Ridley Scott and his production designer Lawrence G. Paull, the 1982 classic remains one of the most stunningly realized films ever made. The immersive world of Scott's dystopian sci-fi gave the impression, as Christopher Nolan once put it, of a "whole world outside the frame of the scene." That's made even more impressive when you consider the production team had a limited VFX budget and constructed most of the sets and visual effects practically.
In other words, "Blade Runner" doesn't look a tad dated even more than 40 years after its debut. Alas, the same can't be said for the cast. The sad truth is that, despite Joe Russo celebrating the inevitable rise of...

"What we visualize, we can actualize!" An early promo trailer has been unveiled for an indie horror thriller titled The Activated Man, from filmmaker Nicholas Gyeney. The film is premiering at the Dances With Films NYC Festival in a few weeks, hence this trailer arriving now just before its big debut. After Ors Gabriel loses his beloved dog to cancer, the shock from the trauma produces strange vision projections that force Ors to wrestle with two possibilities: That his mind has fractured, or that it's actually real... Drawing on the universal theme of grief with a twist that Gyeney's work is noted for, The Activated Man stars Jamie Costa as an everyman who loses his beloved dog. His grief spurs disturbing visions that cause him to wonder if he's dealing with the usual highs and lows of a painful loss, or if darker forces are preying on his mind. The cast also includes Tony Todd,...

After Risky Business, Tom Cruise was catapulted into the spotlight. Sure, there was Taps and The Outsiders, but once he slid across the floor in his skivvies, he was it. And he could choose any project he wanted, including a picture with David Lynch. As it turns out, Tom Cruise was in contention for the role of Paul Atreides in 1984’s Dune but couldn’t quite grasp Frank Herbert’s language.
As detailed in Max Evry’s oral history A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune, Tom Cruise could have led the sci-fi flop instead of, you know, headlining Top Gun and shooting pool with Paul Newman. According to Everett McGill, who played Fremen leader Stilgar, “I have a faint recollection that Tom Cruise had some difficulty with the language during his screen test.” Sean Young, who played Chani, delivered an odd cheapshot, saying, “Maybe they hadn’t gotten...

Just because “Dune: Part Two” has been pushed back to 2024 doesn’t mean that your fall can’t be filled with delicious “Dune”-y goodness.
Max Evry’s “A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s ‘Dune,’ An Oral History” traces the development, production and reception to the “Eraserhead” filmmaker’s take on Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi novel. The book, to be released by 1984 Publishing on Sept. 19, is a gorgeous artifact (those red pages) and richly rewarding, even if you have only a passing interest or understanding of the initial attempt at a “Dune” adaptation. As you can imagine, things are messy, and in this exclusive excerpt, star Kyle MacLachlan, Sean Young and others recount a particularly fraught sequence that MacLachlan was having trouble with. Enjoy!

Calling the production of 1989's "Batman" an uphill struggle is an understatement. There's a reason director Tim Burton claims bringing his vision of the Dark Knight to fruition was "torture." Lawyer-turned-producer Michael E. Uslan, who'd acquired the rights to a Batman movie in the '70s, envisioned a darker cinematic take on the character, and Burton was brought on to make it happen. But keeping things on track was a slog from the outset.
Burton had to work hard to convince Uslan that Michael Keaton should play Batman, and that was just the beginning of his struggles. The director clashed with producer Jon Peters, who reportedly caused Burton to run off set in tears after he told him to add more "pathos and romance" to his movie. Carl Grissom actor Jack Palance also gave Burton a dressing down after a miscommunication on-set. And all of this was happening within the...

Actor Michael Keaton has a long list of credits, known for films such as Mr. Mom, Multiplicity, and Beetlejuice. In 1989, he landed the coveted role of Bruce Wayne in Batman.
Now in his seventies, Keaton has worked alongside many incredible A-list actors throughout his 45-year career in Hollywood. However, there he refused to work with one well-known actor due to a previous romantic relationship. Despite Keaton’s resistance, the popular A-lister made it into the Batman franchise.
Michael Keaton as Batman
Known for playing comedic roles, Keaton surprised audiences when he appeared in the 1989 Batman blockbuster film. Directed by Tim Burton, the film took a gothic spin on the classic Caped Crusader tale, redefining the superhero genre.
In 1992, Keaton reprised his role in Batman Returns, but when the 1995 Batman Forever film came out, Keaton was no longer donning the Dark Knight’s suit, instead replaced by Val Kilmer. Tim Burton...

In the opening minutes of DC Down, Washington DC is hit by an earthquake that, among other things, causes the roof of The White House to collapse trapping President Powell and Vice President Jameson inside.
Lance Cushing a former combat engineer and search and rescue expert is called in to help get them out. He brings his fiance Katherine who is a seismologist along. It’s a good thing he did because it looks like there’s going to be some massive aftershocks, but her so far unproven “Dispersal Theory” might be able to protect what’s left of The White House from them. Meanwhile, Speaker of the House Wilder has been sworn in as acting President, and a militia group, The Virginia Lookout, led by Beck are heading to DC.

Amazon Prime Video’s live action Blade Runner series could be delayed by as long as a year after the production schedule was disrupted amid the writers strike.
The BBC reported that filming on Blade Runner 2099 was due to get underway at Northern Ireland’s Belfast Harbour Studios, but could now be pushed back until Spring 2024.
The writers strike, which is now in its third week, was cited as a factor in the postponement. Amazon had no comment.
Northern Ireland Screen said: “Northern Ireland Screen is extremely disappointed that Blade Runner 2099 is not going ahead at this time due to the ongoing writers’ strike.
“The project has been prepping on the ground in Belfast for many months now. The WGA strike has been halting production all over the world and we hope a fair deal is reached soon so crew can get back to work.”

De-aging has come a long way, from “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” to “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in the last 15 years. While “Benjamin Button” won the VFX Oscar for its trailblazing reverse-aging of Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford’s Indy finale (which premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of its June 30 theatrical opening) is already being talked up as an Oscar contender for its breakthrough AI-generated de-aging, making the actor look 40 years younger fighting Nazis in the 25-minute opening flashback.
With David Fincher’s “Benjamin Button,” digital technology caught up with need, and its success spawned a wave of de-aging that fought off the Uncanny Valley with varying degrees of success. This included Patrick Stewart in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Terminator Salvation,” Jeff Bridges in “Tron: Legacy,” Michael Douglas in “Ant-Man,” Kurt Russell in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Samuel L. Here’s a fun fact that Hollywood actors hate to admit… people get older.
In a reaction to the natural progression of life, Hollywood has engaged in de-aging effects for older actors to play younger versions of their characters, whether in franchises or standalone films — such as Robert DeNiro in “The Irishman,” Samuel L. Jackson in “Captain Marvel” and most recently, Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Like most new technology that comes into the industry, it takes some getting used to. However, with more than two dozen high-profile experiments thus far, the misfires greatly outweigh the successes. De-aging effects in Hollywood still need to be fine-tuned, and Hollywood should only use them once we can perfect the technique.
A primary concern is that while these effects are visually impressive, they fall short of replicating the natural appearance of a younger self. In addition, it can...

It’s no secret that a certain wall-crawling hero was Stan Lee’s favorite Marvel creation, with the comic book legend having so much of a soft spot for Spider-Man that he modeled J. Jonah Jameson on a grumpier version of himself. Still, despite Spider-Man’s introduction in 1962, he didn’t get the Hollywood treatment until Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 40 years later in 2002.
And in the years before and after Tobey Maguire first swung across the New York City skyline, there’s been a galaxy of stars who’ve nearly donned the red and blue suit. So from those who’ve gone on to lead billion-dollar franchises of their own to others who’ve landed other roles in the Spider-Verse, here are 10 actors who nearly played Spider-Man.
Heath Ledger
The search for Tinsel Town’s Spider-Man went through several iterations, but when Raimi eventually took the reins, Tobey Maguire wasn’t his first choice.

In Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune, Paul Atreides is known by at least two other names: Muad’Dib and Usul. But in the epic new movie Dune: Part Two, Paul’s other name will, perhaps, be erased from existence. In Paul’s visions of the future in Part One, Chani did not call him “Usul” and now in the trailer for Part Two, he doesn’t call him Usul, either. This is significant, and Dune: Part Two will have subtly changed the source material if nobody utters this name throughout the entire movie. Speculation ahead.
In the new trailer, we get a lot of alone time between Chani (Zendaya) and Paul (Timothée Chalamet). We see Paul talking to Chani about what it’s like to swim in water, and we see Chani questioning him about his future visions. For Paul, the visions of Chani have been in his head since...

De-aging tech has received its share of criticism, and rightly so. In our nostalgia-mad monoculture, being able to digitally rewind the physical effects of time seems like a neat trick that can, and kind of has, only been used as a gimmick. In recent years we've seen de-aging tech creep further into movie-making and so far it's yet to really prove its worth. There was the time Corridor Crew did a better job than Lucasfilm of deep-faking young Luke Skywalker. Then Martin Scorsese tried de-aging Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci for "The Irishman" — a fascinating project that ultimately ended up feeling a bit uncanny, especially when DeNiro performed a fight scene as a 30-something version of himself who moved with all the aggression and vigor of a semi-conscious toddler waking up from a nap.

It’s 2021. The world is gradually emerging from lockdown, blinking in the balmy sunshine as normal life – its pubs, parks, pubs in the park – begin to bubble with life again. One song is inescapable: an intimate electronic track from a little indie outfit from Oxford. “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals is the indisputable soundtrack of the summer, having come seemingly out of nowhere. Or did it?
When a song goes viral on TikTok, it feels organic. The spread of a danceable pop track, memeable sound bite, or classic Eighties love ballad seemingly happens overnight and at random selection. Suddenly, 14-year-olds are choreographing dances and vloggers are outfit-of-the-daying to it. And just like that, a trending track is born. But even a trend can be manufactured for the right price. Increasingly, TikTok influencers are being paid by PR agencies and music labels to post videos using a particular song in the...

Movie magic relies on a swath of visual elements falling into place, including CGI, makeup, and sets, as well as the dangerous work that stunt performers handle. A well-run movie set does what it can to avoid unnecessary risks to actors and crew, but sometimes, a scene requires everyone to run on the razor's edge.
