There’s a situation discussed in HBO’s upcoming series The Franchise — a comedy about the behind-the-scenes struggle to make a superhero movie — that sounds rather absurd: A director laboring away on a fictional Marvel-like film gradually realizes the studio brass has changed their mind about the project’s creative direction and started secretly shooting the “real” movie somewhere else, while he continues to film scenes destined to be scrapped.
Yet this has actually happened to at least one filmmaker working on a franchise movie, according to the show’s producers.
“All the research we did — and we did tons, we spoke to so many people — the actual chaos [on superhero films] was really surprising,” says The Franchise creator Jon Brown (Succession), who made the series along with Armando Iannucci (Veep) and Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (1917). “People think these movies are laid out in neat phases for the next 10 years. Then you hear about a set where,...

Richard Osman may be turning his hit novel The Thursday Murder Club into a Netflix feature, but it has not stopped him from roasting the streamer’s chief executive.
During a jolly curtain closer at the Rts London Convention, Osman and his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast co-host Marina Hyde, cast a satirical eye over the day’s speakers.
Osman poked fun at comments made by Ted Sarandos during his opening keynote, in which the Netflix co-ceo shared the secrets of streaming success to an audience of British television luminaries.
Sarandos added that “there’s no reason we couldn’t take 25%” audience share in the UK, which would more than double Netflix’s current viewership of 10%.
Lacing his comments with sarcasm, Osman joked: “We’ve all been in the business a long time and, by and large, we don’t really know what we’re doing. He knows how to...

Robert Downey Jr.’s Tropic Thunder is absolutely unhinged with its satirical take on the film industry. Despite its controversies, the film went on to become a cult classic with time. Now, it looks like there is another Tropic Thunder ready to grace our screens courtesy of Armando Lannucci and Sam Mendes – The Franchise starring Himesh Patel and Aya Cash amongst others.

HBO has released the first trailer for new Max TV series The Franchise ahead of its debut on the streaming platform on Sunday, October 6. While this show isn't based on any comic book you've ever read, it does take place in the world of superheroes...well, superhero movies.
According to the official logline, "The Franchise follows the crew of an unloved franchise movie fighting for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe."
"The comedy series shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f*ck-up has an origin story."

‘The Franchise,’ Superhero Comedy From ‘Veep’ Creator Armando Iannucci, Drops First Stressful Teaser
If you thought Marvel movies were stressful, you ain’t seen nothing yet. HBO dropped the first teaser for “The Franchise,” the premium cable network’s upcoming high-pressure comedy about creating a superhero franchise in Hollywood. The series will premiere on Oct. 6.
The upcoming show comes from Armando Iannucci, best known for creating “Veep” and “The Thick of It,” as well as Sam Mendes and Jon Brown.
“Just another 83 days, and then we’re done,” Himesh Patel as Daniel says in the teaser while rushing down a hall with people filing after him. “I’d savor every moment.”
As is typically the case with Iannucci’s work, it’s difficult to know how much of that statement is rooted in truth and how much is sarcasm thinly masking an impending mental breakdown. That manic tone continues throughout the teaser as characters call this movie everything from “a scrotum resting on...

Any kid who ever dreamed of striding the boards, meticulously prepping for their glamorous on-camera close-up, or adorning the walls of teenagers all over the world as the most fetching heartthrob on the planet, did not entertain for a second that steady work as less-than-studly screen presence like M Emmet Walsh could be its own gloriously gruff reward. If you were born with a face that looked like it went 12 rounds with Sonny Liston before exiting the birth canal, or walked in heels like they were a pair of Carhartts, you're probably destined to be a working stiff like the rest of us for the remainder of your life.

It may have been over a decade in the making, but in recent weeks we've finally started to get our first proper look at Wildwood, the latest epic stop-motion animated adventure from Oregon outfit Laika Studio. Last month, weexclusively revealed a first look photo from Kubo & The Two Strings director Travis Knight's long-gestating passion project, and followed that up shortly after with a world-first stop-motion digital magazine cover introducing the movie's plucky heroine Prue McKeel. Now, at long last, today saw the studio release the first teaser for Knight's adaptation of Colin Meloy's anthropomorphic YA fantasy book(s) — with a little help from some familiar faces. Check it out below:
Now that's what you call a teaser! "There are places in the world that people were never meant to go," ominously intones Jake Johnson over shots of Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo's heroes heading into "dark forests...

"When the first settlers came here, they called the woods the impassable wilderness. It was a warning... to keep away." That's quite an ominous intro! I'm excited to see more from this. Laika has revealed another quick teaser for their next stop-motion animated movie titled Wildwood, which is once again directed by Travis Knight (of Kubo and the Two Strings). They originally started production in 2021, and it's expected to debut sometime in early 2025. The character of Prue was revealed in the first look magazine cover last month. Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her best friend Curtis are drawn into a hidden, magical forest outside Portland after Prue's baby brother Mac is kidnapped by crows, led by a mysterious woman named Alexandra. The cast includes Jacob Tremblay as Curtis, Carey Mulligan, Awkwafina, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Tom Waits, Jemaine Clement, & Richard E. Grant.

The impassable wilderness beckons. Laika Studio, the team behind stop-motion animated hits ParaNorman and Coraline, are back with their sixth stop-motion movie, Wildwood. The studio has released the title reveal for the epic fantasy, and it looks dark.
Wildwood is written by Chris Butler, based on the novel written by Colin Meloy, the lead singer/songwriter for The Decemberists, and illustrated by artist Carson Ellis.
In the film, “Beyond Portland’s city limits lies Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she – along with her hapless classmate Curtis – is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairytales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one.

While it was originally touted as one of the big new series in development at Disney+, Nautilus hit choppy development waters and ended up in Davey Jones' turnaround locker. Fortunately for those of us in the UK and Ireland the show — inspired by Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea – has been picked up by Prime Video and is due to sail onto screens this October.
Nautilus has James Dormer at its creative helm and chronicles the origin story of Captain Nemo (Star Trek: Discovery and Toast Of London's Shazad Latif): an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family.
So he does what surely any of us would — he steals a formidable prototype submarine and escapes into the Indian Ocean with a ragtag crew, determined to enact revenge against the ruthless East India Mercantile Company.

It goes without saying that Keanu Reeves is one of the nicest blokes in Hollywood. Since his debut in showbiz back in the late ’80s, there have been several stories about The Matrix star being an upstanding dude, and the consensus isn’t looking to change anytime soon if ever.
Winona Ryder, who shares a long history with Reeves and even is married in the eyes of the Romanian church, recalled one such story about the actor. During their time together on Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, Ryder revealed Reeves went against the director’s request to protect her.

Francis Ford Coppola is known for going to extreme lengths with his films and doesn’t shy away from pushing actors to their limits to get the most authentic performance.

Last year, there was a massive uproar when “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig was left off of the Best Director lineup at the Oscars, despite the blockbuster movie reaping eight total nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach). “Anatomy of a Fall” helmer Justine Triet, who won the prize for Best Original Screenplay, did wind up earning a directing bid, and it was only the ninth such time in Academy Awards history for a woman. So will the upcoming 2025 Oscars include any female Best Director nominees? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts.

One of the key storylines of Deadpool & Wolverine is Ryan Reynolds’s antihero partnering up with an alternate timeline’s version of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. This marks the fifth project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature the multiverse, but where does it rank?
Considering how ambitious the multiverse concept is, it’s no surprise that the movies that have used it in the MCU have had somewhat mixed results. For every amazing, emotional sci-fi storyline or awe-inspiring cameo, there’s a plot point that uses the multiverse as a cop-out. How well does Deadpool & Wolverine use the multiverse?

The royal family stepped out for the tenth day of Wimbledon, as Queen Camilla was seen with Kate Middleton’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton. She was also with Zara and Mike Tindall.
The Royal Family And A Vast Array Of Celebrities Enjoyed The Game
Queen Camilla was also joined by many celebrities, including Keira Knightly, David Suchet, Richard E Grant, Abba guitarist Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn.
Other key high-profile tennis enthusiasts include The Archbishop of Canterbury, Fergal Sharkey, an environmental campaigner, and Mark Carney, the prior Governor of the Bank of England.
However, Kate is still a no-show. Queen Camilla was in good spirits as she watched the game. She sat in the Royal Box to see the quarter-final women’s singles match between Elina Svitolina of Ukraine and Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
It was a tense match, as the players’ animosity between Ukraine and Russia was evident.

Murder mystery adaptation The Thursday Murder Club has added yet more names to its cast, including the great Richard E Grant.
Whether The Thursday Murder Club turns out to be good, bad or indifferent, there’s no doubting the strength of its cast. Among the stars already announced, we can now add Withnail himself, Richard E Grant, and veteran British actor Paul Freeman, whose signature roles include Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
The murder mystery adaptation’s other new additions, according to Deadline, are Tom Ellis, Geoff Bell, Sarah Niles and Ingrid Oliver – the latter perhaps best known as recurring character Petronella Osgood in Doctor Who. Oliver also happens to be the spouse of Richard Osman, the author of the original Murder Club novel.
Directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Amblin, The Thursday Murder Club sees a bunch of crime-solving retirement home residents investigate the suspicious death of a local property developer.

Directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Amblin, The Thursday Murder Club sees a bunch of crime-solving retirement home residents investigate the suspicious death of a local property developer.

Vivian MacKerrell – who really did drink lighter fluid – shared a house with Withnail and I director Bruce Robinson
“I must have some booze!” So goes the famous line exclaimed by Richard E Grant in his turn as the title character in the cult classic Withnail and I.
And judging by recently unearthed diaries kept by one of the struggling actors the film was based on, it’s clear to see how that kind of dialogue came so easy.

Portland-based Laika will explore a labyrinthian alternate reality in “Piranesi,” one of its upcoming stop-motion animated features, adapted from Susanna Clarke’s best-selling fantasy novel. Laika president/CEO Travis Knight will direct, pushing stop-motion further into the domain traditionally occupied by live action.
In “Piranesi,” the eponymous protagonist lives in a strange house comprised of infinite rooms, endless corridors, and walls lined with thousands of statues. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. Piranesi, who believes that he’s always lived in the house, studies the tides and architectural pattern as part of his exploration. He meets another person, the Other, who visits twice a week and asks for assistance in his research about the house. Piranesi soon discovers dark secrets and a world beyond what he’s always known.
