Sky Studios CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz has said there is “no scenario” in which its pay-tv customers will not have access to content from Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max when it launches in the UK.
Sky has been the sole home of HBO content in the UK for many years, but it is widely expected Wbd will move the content to its own streamer when their current output deal ends in 2025. Wbd has not officially set a date for a UK launch, but senior exec J.B. Perrette said earlier this year it would “crazy” not to go direct-to-consumer in the UK.
With that backdrop, speculation has been rampant about what the future of the Sky-Wbd partnership will look like, with both sides making positive noises about an agreement without clearly outlining what shape it could take.
Speaking today at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Frot-Coutaz echoed comments Sky CEO Dana Strong...

Exclusive: Fathom Events has acquired the fantasy throwback film Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps, set to be released nationwide in theaters sometime this summer.
The project marks the return to the big screen for The NeverEnding Story star Tami Stronach, who played the Childlike Empress in that 1984 fantasy film. In Man and Witch she portrays the titular witch alongside her husband Greg Steinbruner, who stars as the titular man.
A passion project for the couple, Man and Witch—inspired by their own love story— was produced under their Paper Canoe Company banner, with Steinbruner also serving as screenwriter. And to make it a complete family affair, the couple’s daughter Maya also stars in a role that’s described as a “powerful being who is not of this world.”

The on-screen figures in the "Expendables" movies aren't so much characters as they are human-shaped bundles of toxically masculine clichés and blind, violent impulses wrapped in skull-emblazoned kevlar. They lurch about on-screen like Frankensteinian monsters, living piles of jock straps and congealed taurine drinks, belching out monosyllabic action flick catchphrases in between Don Julio-instigated brawls and violent, bullet-riddled missions in other countries. These characters have no thoughts, no humanity, no sense of morals or righteousness. They have no desires other than a distant lizard-brain perception that soldiers in other countries probably need to blow up. "G.I. Joe" is more sophisticated.
With Scott Waugh's "Expend4bles" we are now four films deep into this series, and the franchise's original saleable gimmick has been abandoned. One might recall that Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables" and Simon West's "The Expendables 2" existed merely to unite a cadre of ultra-macho, well-worn badass...

Kelly Ripa has opened up about the “strange experiences” she faced during her early years working with ABC.
The 52-year-old Live! talk show host first joined the network in 2001, replacing Kathie Lee Gifford as the late Regis Philbin’s co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly.
Following Philbin’s 2011 exit, Ripa’s since been the show’s mainstay. However, she has claimed that there have been difficulties over the years.
Describing some periods as “very tough”, Ripa spoke with Variety about the rocky years she endured behind the scenes of the show, including the negotiations she had just to land her own backstage office space.
“It was the strangest experience I’ve ever had in my life. I was told that I couldn’t have an office,” she said. “It didn’t make a whole lot of sense, especially because there were empty offices that I could have easily occupied.

Bill Bailey has shared a touching tribute to Sean Lock.
The comedian posted a throwback photo of the pair out on a country walk 19 months after Lock died of cancer.
Bailey captioned the photo on Twitter: “Some days I still can’t quite believe he’s gone. Today is one of those days.”
He capped the post: “Miss you Sean old pal.”
Bailey participated in a charity walk one year after Lock’s death, raising more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support alongside Lee Mack and Lock’s family.
Last year, Bailey said that Lock was still cracking jokes in his final days. “Even in his last few days, we were still having a laugh, still joking, still coming up with ideas,” he said.
“We had great conversations. I brought in my guitar and sang him his favourite Johnny Cash songs.”

Richard Madeley has been widely criticised after comparing climate protesters to paedophiles on Good Morning Britain.
During Tuesday (28 March) morning’s episode of the ITV show, Madeley and co-host Susanna Reid discussed recent news that a group of Britain’s top lawyers have stated that they will refuse to prosecute climate activists.
Madeley suggested that there would be a “complete collapse” of the criminal justice system if “barristers and lawyers” are not prosecuting activists.
“It doesn’t work, because they have to be completely impartial,” he said.
“If these people, these barristers and lawyers, have announced they will not prosecute – they simply won’t even get started in a court of law – someone who has glued themselves to the road as part of a Just Stop Oil protest, are they still happy to defend, say, a paedophile?” Madeley asked.

“If these people, these barristers and lawyers, have announced they will not prosecute – they simply won’t even get started in a court of law – someone who has glued themselves to the road as part of a Just Stop Oil protest, are they still happy to defend, say, a paedophile?” Madeley asked.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best original film screenplay of 2023 at the Writers Guild Awards, which were held on Sunday evening in Los Angeles and New York.
The win gives “Everything Everywhere” a sweep of the four major Hollywood guild awards: the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, where it won the ensemble cast award and set a record with four wins in the five SAG categories.
The win made the freewheeling indie film only the fifth film to sweep the major guilds since the SAG awards first handed out the ensemble award in 1995. The first four were “American Beauty,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Argo,” all of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
If “Everything Everywhere” was a strong favorite to win that award going into this weekend, it will now be a commanding one heading into Oscar week.

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.
The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.
Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

Don’t look for four of the 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay (the original scripts for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Triangle of Sadness” plus the adaptations of “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Living” ) on the list of 2023 Writers Guild of America Awards nominations announced January 25. They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.
The Original Screenplay frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is in contention for this guild award as are two of its Oscar rivals: “The Fabelmans” and “Tar.” The WGA race is rounded out by the scripts for “The Menu” and “Nope.”
Likewise our predicted winner for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars — “Women Talking” — is vying for this award too. It faces off against a pair of Oscar nominees — “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — plus “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “She Said....

The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) and Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) announced the outstanding screenplay nominees for their annual Writers Guild Awards just one day after the 2023 Oscars nominations came out. Given the organization’s strict eligibility rules, the WGA has created interesting differences between its choices and the Academy’s this year.
Looking at the five WGA Original Screenplay nominees, only three were nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar: “The Fabelmans,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “TÁR.” The difference could easily be chalked up to the fact that Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” were not eligible, as they were not written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of an international affiliate Guild.

Jeremy Clarkson has reportedly closed a restaurant at his Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds, following a planning row.
The former Top Gear star, who now appears in Amazon Prime’sThe Grand Tourand Clarkson’s Farm, opened the venue in a barn last July, where there is also a farm shop.
The restaurant, which was situated in a field at the 1000 acre site, prompted protests from people living in the village of Chadlington.
Many locals claimed the restaurant led to disruption and heavy traffic, disturbing the peaceful rural area.
The restaurant was closed after an enforcement order from Cotswold council officials in August, with Clarkson initially determined to fight the decision. He argued that the venue did not break any planning rules.
The Sunday Mirror has now reported that Clarkson has given up. He wrote a letter to West Oxfordshire District Council, saying he had been “thwarted” by the enforcement notice.

On 20 November, 1974, a man left his clothes in a neat pile on a Miami beach, walked into the sea, and never returned. Later that day, a waiter at a nearby hotel found the man’s clothes and the police were alerted. A search began, but the man could not be found. That man was John Stonehouse, Labour MP for Walsall North and a former Postmaster General in Harold Wilson’s government.
Stonehouse had been a rising star in Wilson’s government of 1964, with his sights set on high office. But things didn’t go as swimmingly as he’d hoped, and within a few years he was in financial ruin, his marriage was over, he had been questioned by MI5 on suspicion of being a spy for the Czech secret service, and he ended up faking his own death in Miami.

Bill Bailey has said that Jeremy Clarkson “got the kicking he deserved” over his column about Meghan Markle in The Sun.
The piece has become the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s (Ipso) most complained-about article, and has attracted criticism from high-profile figures, politicians, and his own daughter, Emily Clarkson.
In the column, Clarkson wrote that he dreamt of the day that the duchess would be made to parade naked through Britain while a crowd chanted “shame” and threw “excrement” at her.
The former Top Gear presenter, 62, claimed that “everyone who’s my age thinks the same way”.
Bailey, 57, is the latest celebrity to weigh in on the controversy.
In an interview with The Telegraph, which took place days after Clarkson issued an apology for the piece, the comedian said: “That was classic Twitter.”
He continued: “You might [make a comment like Clarkson’s] in the pub as a clumsy, oafish sort of laugh. But you put...

Netflix subscribers are facing a dilemma when watching the new release, Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope arrives on Netflix on Sunday (1 January) with its unusual premise prompting raised eyebrows and questions from many viewers.
The crime drama – created by Matchstick Men author Eric Garcia – takes place over 25 years. It follows a group of masterful thieves, led by Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito, who work together to pull off an elaborate heist.
What has intrigued viewers, however, is the fact that the series has been designed so that viewers can watch seven of the available eight episodes in any order
This means that every episode, named after different colours, except the finale – titled “White” – can be watched in any sequence and the narrative will still make sense.
Netflix users have been assigned Kaleidoscope episodes in different sequences, except for the first and last episode.

As the ubiquitous “Wednesday” and mighty “Harry and Meghan” continue to dominate in series viewership on Netflix, a nonfiction film is breaking through in a surprising way: “The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari.”
Ranked as the number one film in the U.S on Wednesday, filmmaker Rory Kennedy directs the tense story of 47 tourists and guides trapped by a volcanic eruption off the coast of New Zealand in December of 2019. Through firsthand accounts, Kennedy retraces the event minute-by-minute, demonstrating mother nature’s power and the kindness of strangers in equal parts.
Breaking into the official Netflix Global Top 10 this week, “The Volcano” hit number one in countries including the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe on Wednesday. It’s a notable performance often dominated by Netflix originals and holiday content. One source familiar with Netflix noted how rare it was for a documentary feature to make this kind of noise around the world,...

In the new ITV drama, Stonehouse, written by John Preston,...

Set to hit the BBC on Christmas Day in the U.K., “The Smeds and The Smoos” is the tenth in a series of screen adaptations based on books by iconic children’s publishing duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Starring the voices of “Bridgerton’s” Adjoa Andoh and comedian Bill Bailey, the film was produced by long-time Donaldson/Scheffler collaborators Magic Light Pictures.
The 30-minute adaptation tells the story of two adorable aliens, Bill and Janet, who come from warring clans. When they fall in love and run away together, their families reluctantly team up to find them and bring them home – unexpectedly becoming friends in the process.
Donaldson writes (usually in rhyming couplets) while Scheffler illustrates (although he has also written his own pictures books too). Together they hit gold over 25 years ago with “The Gruffalo,” spawning an Oscar-nominated film starring Helena Bonham Carter, an array of carefully-curated merchandise,...
