The news of the moment keeps veering between cutbacks and comebacks. Keep your shrink on hold.
Paramount is laying off thousands and closing its TV studio, but Skydance’s David Ellison, its new owner, promises that an important new slate is on its way. Disney is shedding employees as park attendance sags, but also is investing billions in new theme park attractions and even a solid entertainment slate (Bob Iger calls it a “turbocharge”).
Even battle-scarred United Artists with Scott Stuber as its new savior promises yet another comeback after alternate decades of brilliance and disaster.
Given all this, the ongoing drama surrounding Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav seems downright comforting.
I take more than an academic interest in all this since I’ve personally been enmeshed in both ups and downs (the “ups” at ’70s Paramount were more memorable).
And it was Tom Cruise who, having just become chief of UA,...

Amazon MGM Studios has set a multi-year film partnership with Scott Stuber to finance and release movies under his new production company and to relaunch United Artists, the studio announced on Friday.
The agreement with Stuber’s new entity, which will be based on Amazon MGM Studios’ Culver City lot, also includes a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios. In addition, Stuber will be involved in all projects released by the new UA.
Stuber is coming off a seven-year run at Netflix where he spearheaded the streamer’s film division as chairman of Netflix Films. He left the company earlier this year and was replaced by Dan Lin.
The move to Amazon may be a better fit for Stuber, who spent his tenure at Netflix advocating for a more significant theatrical footprint for their films. While he was intermittently successful, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos continually maintained that the streamer would...

Alan Ritchson fully embodied Jack Reacher while fronting the first season of Prime Video's "Reacher." But there are plenty of people behind the scenes who made the series the successful adaptation of Lee Child's book series that it was.
Producer Don Granger is one of those people. Child has spoken about how Granger, a longtime friend of the author, was the one that sealed the deal when it came to casting Ritchson, by almost immediately telling Child, "he's the guy." The producer had previously worked with both Child and Tom Cruise on the first film adaptation of the Jack Reacher novels, 2012's "Jack Reacher" and the 2016 follow-up, "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back." He'd also worked closely with Cruise since joining the actor and Paula Wagner's Cruise/Wagner Productions back in 2004, later taking his talents to Skydance Productions where he produced "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" and "Top Gun: Maverick," among other projects.

In the summer of 1996, Tom Cruise and director Brian De Palma achieved something that Hollywood would spend much of the next decade trying to replicate: a genuinely great movie adaptation of a popular television show that blew up at the box office. The first Mission: Impossible movie was somehow both an ode to the face-swapping, hi-tech hijinks of the original 1960s series while also serving as the perfect star vehicle for Cruise. Even De Palma was at the peak of his powers as an auteur, having just made his most underrated movie in Carlito’s Way.
In the years that followed, other big screen updates of small screen favorites would try to repeat the formula with often disastrous results. Film versions of shows like Wild Wild West, Lost in Space, The Avengers (not that one), and The Mod Squad all amounted to miserable trips to the multiplex. Meanwhile Mission: Impossible’s...

On May 22, 1996, Paramount Pictures and Tom Cruise unveiled the big screen adaptation of Mission: Impossible, which would go on to gross $180 million and kickstart a feature franchise. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
The fuse is burning throughout the big-screen reworking of the cloak-and-dagger TV show Mission: Impossible, but apart from the wham-bam conclusion, there’s a disappointing lack of fireworks in this hotly anticipated production.
An upsy-daisy download takes place as Tom Cruise invades the CIA. The Paramount release will open huge and download gigabucks worldwide. However, tepid word-of-mouth will knock it off the must-see list of many movie goers.
The first production by high-rolling star Tom Cruise and his partner and former agent Paula Wagner, Brian De Palma’s dour and only fitfully entertaining techno-thriller teases one with some of the original show’s team espionage spirit, but overall takes itself too seriously. Set mainly in European cities,...

Robin Wagner, one of Broadway’s most prolific and celebrated set designers with three Tony Awards and a roster of major credits including Angels in America, Dreamgirls, A Chorus Line, The Producers and Jelly’s Last Jam, died Monday in his sleep in New York City. He was 89.
Wagner’s death was announced through a spokesperson by his daughter Christie Wagner Lee.
Born in San Francisco, Wagner developed his interest in set design while attending the Palace of Fine Arts (now the California School of Fine Arts). One was fiercely focused, the other accident-prone. They both made it.
The careers of Rob Lowe and Tom Cruise first collided exactly 40 years ago when the two very young but ambitious actors showed up at an Oklahoma location to assume their roles in The Outsiders, directed by Francis Coppola.
Although thrilled by the opportunity, they didn’t exactly click: Asked to share hotel rooms, Cruise had his agent demand a single because the actor wanted to study his script each night. Lowe found another roommate for camaraderie.
On opening night, Lowe angrily discovered most of his scenes had been cut while Cruise’s had survived. It was an ominous portent because Cruise soon moved on to hits like Risky Business and Top Gun. Lowe struggled with early disappointments like Class and Masquerade.

Martin Scorsee and Leonardo DiCaprio’s adaptation of “The Devil in the White City,” based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book about the notorious real-life 19th-century serial killer, is no longer moving forward at Hulu, multiple sources reported on Monday.
It’s the latest no-go for the project in a nearly 20-year attempt to bring it to the screen. The most recent version had Keanu Reeves set to star as visionary architect Daniel H. Burnham, but once “Tár” director Todd Field exited in October, so did Reeves.
No casting was announced for the title role of Dr. H. H. Holmes, who is considered America’s first modern serial killer. He slaughtered guests who were attending the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair in his diabolical “Murder Castle.” The horrific true story inspired a 2006 episode of “Supernatural.”

The later "Mission: Impossible" films have worked hard to establish a cohesive tone for the franchise, and while they've pretty much succeeded, it's made earlier installments, like "Mission: Impossible II," stick out like a sore thumb. The second "Mission Impossible" movie is the uncontested black sheep of the Ethan Hunt saga. With a style that pulls frequently from director John Woo's bag of tricks — Doves! Explosions! Slow-mo! Wind machines! — and a conflict lifted straight from a Hitchcockian noir, it's in direct contrast with the rest of the franchise. Even compared to its predecessor, directed with bombastic precision by Brian de Palma, "Mission: Impossible II" feels like a wild pendulum swing in the other direction — and into an entirely unique realm of action cinema.

In another blow to Hulu’s series adaptation of “The Devil in the White City,” Todd Field has exited the project on which he was to serve as director and executive producer, Variety has learned exclusively.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the search is now on for a new director. News of Field’s departure from the show comes just days after Variety also exclusively reported that series star Keanu Reeves had bowed out as well.
Field most recently wrote and directed the Cate Blanchett-led drama feature “Tár,” which debuted at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival. The film received rave reviews upon its debut and is being touted as an early Oscar contender. In his review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman wrote, “The movie is breathtaking — in its drama, its high-crafted innovation, its vision. It’s a ruthless but intimate tale of art, lust, obsession, and power.

"The Devil in the White City" seems to have lost its architect in what might be the worst TV news we've heard in weeks. According to Variety, Keanu Reeves has exited the long-gestating adaptation of Erik Larson's popular book, where he was set to play real-life Chicago World's Fair designer Daniel H. Burnham. His turn as the historic architect would have marked Reeves' first live-action major American TV role.
The adaptation of "The Devil in the White City" has been plagued by changes and interruptions since it first began its path to production in 2010. Back then, Leonardo DiCaprio acquired the film rights to the book with plans to play serial killer H.H. Holmes – whose own story parallels Burnhams as the two both make their mark around the same time – in a film adaptation of the material. In 2015, Martin Scorsese boarded the project with plans to direct, but in 2021, news...

Two leading advocates for Asian talent in the film industry have joined forces as it was revealed today that The Asian World Film Festival (Awff), a top attraction and platform for showcasing Asian talent and exporting Asian culture, has established an official partnership with Peter Luo’s Stars Collective – a program designed to promote the next generation of diverse voices and creative storytellers, while also accelerating the female power movement, much of which is Asian.

Tom Cruise, now approaching age 60, has never reacted calmly to frustration. This week his carefully structured life was put on hold by delays of his two heralded mega movies: the Top Gun sequel and the seventh Mission: Impossible.
Can Hollywood survive another year without Cruise? Or can Cruise?
Star egos drift into paranoia even in the best of times and these are the worst, with celebrities worldwide finding themselves parked on the sidelines. Apart from movie delays, China now has declared war on celebrities and pop stars in general. Could others follow suit? (More on that below.)
Celebrity narcissism is normally cringe-inducing, but this time I empathize with Cruise for both his candor and tenacity. “I need the action,” Cruise once told me, a semi-crazed look in his eyes. He had just produced and starred in Lions for Lambs, a courageous anti-war movie about two young soldiers who’d served in Afghanistan.

Starlight Joins With Beijing Film Academy to Launch Training and Development Partnership (Exclusive)
Hollywood financier Starlight Cultural Entertainment and its talent development offshoot Stars Collective have established a partnership with the Beijing Film Academy.
It will focus on the incubation, development, packaging, financing, production and distribution of content for a global audience. It will also deliver specialized training in new and emerging areas of the entertainment ecosystem.
The partnership is headed by Starlight’s Peter Luo and Li Weike, president of the Bfa’s educational institute Bfa Century Group. It is a close parallel to the Stars Collective program that Luo established under Starlight, and which currently supports over 100 emerging filmmakers and actors around the world.
Among the first steps will be the establishment of a Bfa Century-Starlight master class program. This will lean on U.S., Chinese and international luminaries already associated with Stars Collective. They include: directors Sam Raimi, James Wan, Alan Taylor; producers Paula Wagner, Donna Gigliotti, Gianni Nunnari, Chris Lee,...

It was a rare thing even back then. Inside movie houses across America, the silence was so acute you could hear a popcorn kernel drop—never mind pins. That was because on the big beautiful cinema screen, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt was performing what 25 years and six Mission: Impossible movies later may still be his greatest stunt. And there weren’t any motorcycles revving up, nor was there a plane taking off. All we needed was an actor dangling from a wire over a glass floor. If you looked closely, too, out of the corner of his eye there suddenly would be a single drop of perspiration, which if it hit the floor meant game over. Trust us, Tom, you weren’t the only one sweating bullets that day.

Leading Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming will take a production role on selected film titles emerging from Stars Collective, the talent incubator program backed by China- and Los Angeles-based financier Starlight Media.
Huang, who has credits including “The Message” and “American Dreams in China,” will lead Stars Collective’s talent discovery efforts in China, be a mentor to the selected filmmakers and take a formal producer role on selected, individual projects the program hatches.
Stars Collective was launched last year with the idea of supporting 50 emerging filmmakers. Starlight now says it has over 100 filmmakers sighed up and has earmarked $100 million for development and initial production.
“The majority of those selected of the program are female, and represent a highly diverse mix of nationalities, ethnicities, races and personal and professional backgrounds,” the company said. “Stars Collective integrates global resources by bringing together local alliances of film producers and film commissions, throughout Europe for instance,...

Traditionally mounted by the USC Libraries as an elegant black-tie, sit-down dinner at the historic Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library at the University of Southern California, this year the Scripter Awards went global. On Saturday, March 13, the USC Libraries opened up their exclusive awards show to honor the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based, as a virtual event.
This diverse group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race. Last year’s Scripter winners on the film and TV side were Oscar and Emmy nominees Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), respectively. Past winners of both the Scripter and the Oscar include “Call Me by Your Name,” “Moonlight,” “The Big Short,” and “The Imitation Game.” In fact, before 2019, eight Scripter Award winners went on to win Oscars.
