Exclusive: Legion M, a fan-driven film production and distribution outfit behind films like SXSW audience award winner My Dead Friend Zoe, has just raised $5 million from 15,000 individual investors.
It is the company’s largest fundraising round, both in terms of the number of investors and the amount raised, and is slated to close on October 11. The influx of investors brings the company’s total count to almost 50,000.
The news comes a day after a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign for fall title The Apprentice offered yet more evidence that newer models of film financing appear to be increasingly viable.
Legion M, whose slate also includes the upcoming film The Man in the White Van, which stars Sean Astin, Ali Larter, Madison Wolfe and Brec Bassinger, lets audiences get directly involved in the creation of content and own a financial stake in it. Apple TV+ has announced that they will be releasing the four-part documentary The Enfield Poltergeist – which tells about the case that served as inspiration for The Conjuring 2 – on October 27th, just in time for Halloween viewings. Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer for the docu-series, and you can check it out in the embed above.
According to Deadline, The Enfield Poltergeist relies on more than 250 hours of audio archive to help recreate the infamous events in Enfield. Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews from back in the day. The doc built a replica of the council house where the incidents took place so performers could reenact what is heard on the tapes.
The docu-series also features appearances by people who were actually involved in the haunting case.

This article contains major spoilers for "The Nun II."
Has "The Nun II" signaled the start of a fresh, new subgenre of films? After the success of the Russell Crowe-starring "The Pope's Exorcist," maybe we ought to welcome our newest overlords: supernatural-themed horror movies following associates of the Vatican who investigate paranormal events. Call me crazy, but I know a pattern when I see one!
Okay, maybe that's a bit of a stretch (as much as we'd love to see that happen!), but there's no hiding the fact that audiences simply can't get enough of anything related to filmmaker James Wan's "The Conjuring" universe ... including movies that are lacking the involvement of fan-favorite characters Ed and Lorraine Warren. The opening weekend box office haul of "The Nun II" speaks for itself, even as the overall critical reception indicates there's still room for improvement. (You can check out my mixed-positive review for /Film here.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 8 finale, “What Rough Beast.”] Mayfair Witches Season 1 has come to a close at AMC and AMC+, and the finale answered the season-long questions while teeing the narrative up for its impending second season. Alexandra Daddario‘s Rowan went through the wringer to learn the full truth of her place in the family prophecy. And through some key reveals, we learned who the real bad actors of the plot were all along. “What Rough Beast” began with Rowan still bleeding from her Episode 7 gunshot wound. She avenged Tessa’s (Madison Wolfe) murder with Lasher’s (Jack Huston) help, and in the aftermath, he took her into the memory world previously seen via Ciprien (Tongayi Chirisa). Her body laid defenseless in the woods, and Uncle Cortland (Harry Hamlin) took her body to the Mayfair mausoleum to prepare her for “the witching hour.” Alfonso Bresciani/AMC After learning his...

Rowan has been searching for answers throughout Mayfair Witches Season 1, and she’ll finally find them in the finale, airing Sunday, February 26 on AMC. In the TV Insider exclusive clip above, Alexandra Daddario‘s Mayfair witch finds herself in the mysterious memory world of Lasher’s (Jack Huston) creation that Ciprien (Tongayi Chirisa) narrowly escaped in Episode 7. But for Rowan, this place holds no mystery. Rather, it contains all the information she’s been looking for. Lasher teaches Rowan about Suzanne (Hannah Alline), the first Mayfair witch, in this finale sneak peek. Rowan’s Scottish ancestor made a deal with Lasher that bound him to the women of their family forever, with the 13th witch in their line playing a key role in the prophecy this union put in motion. Rowan walks through the magical Scottish cottage with a bullet wound in her shoulder, sustained while attempting to save cousin...

Mayfair Witches said goodbye to one of its witches on Sunday.
The penultimate episode of the season was a nail-biter as Rowan (Alexandra Daddario) enacted a plan to save Tessa (Madison Wolfe) after being kidnapped by a group who were against witches.
Despite some hope that Tessa would escape her predicament, she died in the closing moments after being shot by Keith (Ian Hoch).
In an exclusive interview with TV Fanatic, Madison Wolfe revealed she was shocked while reading the episode.
"We were filming episodes five and six, and I didn't get episode seven until right before we started shooting that episode," Wolfe tells TV Fanatic.
"Honestly, my reaction was similar to so many of our audience members because, as you said, I'm reading it, and I'm like, 'okay, she's good. She made it."'
Despite being sad that Tessa had to die, Madison was excited because she had never died on-screen before.

On first impression, AMC’s Mayfair Witches appears as lush as the overgrown yard of the New Orleans bungalow where much of it takes place.
The plot, adapted from Anne Rice’s novels, centers on a preternaturally gifted surgeon named Rowan (The White Lotus‘ Alexandra Daddario) who discovers she’s heir to a dynasty of women with special powers. As she explores her family tree, each gnarled root seems to branch off into knottier tangles still — ultimately yielding a saga laden with sex, death and magic, spanning hundreds of years and thousands of miles.
But amid that sordid lore, creators Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex) and Esta Spalding (On Becoming a God in Central Florida) make the fatal mistake of prioritizing mythology and mystery over personality and plot. As a result, while there’s a great deal happening onscreen at every turn — secrets to uncover, murders to solve, dances to...

The evil nun featured in director James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 (watch it Here) got her own spin-off movie that was appropriately called The Nun (watch that one Here), and now The Nun 2 is heading toward a September 2023 release. But it’s a well known story by now that the nun wasn’t originally intended to be in The Conjuring 2. "You're not going anywhere in this stolen van!" 1091 Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie coming-of-age comedy titled Paulie Go!, arriving on VOD later this month to watch. The film is premiering at the upcoming 2022 Minneapolis–Saint Paul Film Festival, just before it opens. A young AI prodigy gets rejected from a world-renowned robotics lab and does what any rational teenager would do - steal a van and drive across the country to Northern Minnesota to track down the Professor who rejected him. Along the way he meets a girl named Avery, an expert angler who joins him on his journey up the rivers. The film stars Ethan Dizon as Paulie, who made his debut in the director's very first feature 4th Man Out. The cast also includes Madison Wolfe, Bernard White, David Theune, Corinne Chooey, and Tracie Thoms. This looks a bit too over-the-top kooky in a few scenes,...

Exclusive: Graham McTavish has signed on to star in Somewhere in Montana, an upcoming indie from writer-director Brandon Smith that will go before cameras later this year.
In the film, the Scottish actor will play John Thomas, a ranch owner who allows a Hollywood production company to come and use his ranch as a location for their movie when he runs into financial difficulties. Eden Matson is exec producing for Nova Vento Entertainment.
“I’m excited to be working on this film with Brandon,” said McTavish. “Not only because this is a script that only comes along rarely in an actor’s career, but also because it fulfills a dream of visiting the beautiful state of Montana. It’s going to be something special that I can’t wait to share.”

This trashy family fantasy – in which a lonely girl hunts giants in a handily creepy forest – confuses fake jeopardy with drama
There should be a separate genre heading for this film: time-wasting droopy fantasy. It is based on a graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura and directed by the Danish film-maker Anders Walter, who won an Oscar in 2014 for his short film Helium. From the outset, there is a heart-sinking sense of deja vu. Ja Bayona’s recent movie A Monster Calls – about a child retreating from emotional pain into CGI fantasy – had a certain storytelling force. But this awfully similar confection is flaccid: a pointless parade of unearned emotion, unearned drama, unearned everything.
Madison Wolfe plays Barbara, a lonely and troubled girl who regularly roams through the nearby forest hunting for “giants”, which we periodically get to see – sub-Iron-Giant/dementors. But there is no question of us,...

I Kill Giants is quite a name for a movie. A really good name actually because with that and the awesome artwork on its poster, I was immediately intrigued…. Based on the comic book of the same title, I Kill Giants tells the story of a troubled girl, Barbara (Madison Wolfe) who believes giants are coming to her town and she is the one to stop them. She has some help in new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) as well as her sister Karen (Imogen Poots) and the school psychologist Mrs Molle (Zoe Saldana) who don’t initially believe what she is saying.
Those looking for a horror movie full of giant slaying might be a little disappointed to hear that this isn’t that kind of film.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A movie as thrillingly weird as its protagonist. We are totally enrapt by the wonder and the terror of her imagination, and the power of it to create joy and solace. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material

I Kill Giants is not a fantasy movie. It’s a drama about fantasy: about the power of stories to help us understand our fears and cope with our anxieties and escape from our pain, at least for a little while. But in a rare creative conjunction, this movie is as thrillingly weird as its protagonist, 12-year-old Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe: The Conjuring 2, Joy). We have no doubt...

Originally published in 2009, Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's graphic novel I Kill Giants introduced us to Barbara, an uncompromising teen girl dealing with some pretty big family issues while also saving her community from giants who randomly emerge to destroy her and everyone she loves.

Oscar-winning Danish filmmaker Anders Walter was vibrating with excitement when he boarded his flight to Canada, his debut feature was about to have its first press screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. It had been almost four years since he’d won the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short, and the 39-year-old director had dedicated every one of them to the challenge of financing and filming “I Kill Giants.”
For all of Walter’s pedigree and potential, the project had been an uphill battle from the very beginning. It didn’t seem to matter that it was based on a popular graphic novel with a built-in fanbase, or that it would star Brie Larson and Zoe Saldana. Twice the movie was ready to roll; twice it had collapsed. But this was all behind him as he sat on the tarmac at Copenhagen Airport. When he left Denmark, his career...

While the main creative force behind I Kill Giants is unquestionably screenwriter Joe Kelly, who adapted his own limited comic series of the same name that he co-created with artist J.M. Ken Niimura, director Anders Walter’s past work including his Oscar-winning short, Helium, shows he’s hardly a stranger to the source material’s subject matter. Kelly and Niimura found success creating a work that reflects what happens when a child uses their imagination to confront a still abstract understanding of death.
It’s no surprise then that the two films I thought about while watching this adaptation were A Monster Calls and Where the Wild Things Are. I Kill Giants plays like a hybrid of sorts that’s just as cognizant of keeping things as darkly resonant.
