Freddie Prinze Jr. has joined the cast of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a sequel to the 1997 horror film in which he starred opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe.
Of the original cast members, Hewitt is in talks to reprise her role as well. Until her contract is finalized, Prinze is set to star alongside Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King. Camila Mendes was supposed to be in the film, but the “Riverdale” actor recently exited the project due to scheduling conflicts.
It’s unclear where the upcoming sequel will pick up, but the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” follows four teens from a small seaside town stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident that was believed to be fatal. The film became a box office success with $125 million globally.

It seems as though both properties that originated from Kevin Williamson-written films are facing casting disarray. As Scream 7 was in development, it was intended to pick up with Scream VI stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega reprising their roles. Then, Barrera would come under scrutiny for controversial statements made on social media in response to the Isreal-Hamas conflict, and the production would let her go. Following that, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Jenna Ortega would also leave the sequel, citing her schedule becoming conflicted with other projects.
Now, the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is also seeing its star exit the project. According to Deadline, Riverdale actress Camila Mendes, who had signed on to star in the urban legend tale, could not make the production date on schedule due to her commitments on the upcoming big-budget franchise production of Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s Masters of the Universe reboot.

Everything seems to be coming together nicely for the highly anticipated I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, which is also being called a legacy sequel. Recently, we learned that the new movie will not erase the events that happened in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Brandy emphasized that she had not heard about the new project but would want to return as Karla Wilson, the character she played in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
“I didn’t know Sony was putting that together,” Brandy tells THR of the new film. “That’s interesting!”
When asked if she might be pulling a fast one in order to maintain secrecy about her potential appearance, Brandy maintained that she was indeed in the dark. “I’m not pulling a fast one on you,” she said. “I did not know that.

Filming is getting underway this year on director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, a sequel to the 1997 slasher movie that will reportedly feature fresh faces alongside legacy characters. But will the new movie pull a Halloween 2018 and effectively erase the events of the slasher movie’s two sequels from this particular timeline?
Rumors and reports over the weekend indicated that I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 will indeed operate only as a sequel to the ’97 movie, but Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has taken to social media this week to let us know that those rumors are very much untrue.
Kaytin Robinson tweets, “Iskwydls is canon.” She’s of course referring to 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, the original sequel to the 1997 slasher movie.

Hewitt confirmed a couple of months ago that she was in talks to come back for the new film, and now Prinze has finally confirmed that he is as well, telling Us Weekly that he is “motivated” to close the deal.

The upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot has found its cast, according to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who are in talks to reprise their roles from the 1997 movie as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively, the reboot has tapped Riverdale and Outer Banks stars Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline as its female leads.
Discussions are also underway to cast Tony Award-winning actress Sarah Pidgeon (Stereophonic), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta), and Jonah Hauer-King, who recently starred in Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid alongside Halle Bailey.
No details have emerged about who these actors will be playing, but we can assume Cline and Mendes will play characters loosely inspired by Helen Shivers and Julie James from the original 1997 slasher pic.

Maya Hawke Is Ok With Being a Nepo Baby: ‘I’m Comfortable With Not Deserving It and Doing It Anyway’
Maya Hawke is fine with being called a “nepo baby.”
Hawke, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, recently admitted to the Times of London that she believes her family ties influenced her casting in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” as Flower Child, one of Charles Manson’s followers.
“I’ve been wildly made fun of for this clip when I said, on the red carpet, that I auditioned,” Hawke said of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” “I never meant to imply that I didn’t get the part for nepotistic reasons — I think I totally did.”
Hawke got her big break playing Robin Buckley in the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” and her other credits include “Do Revenge,” “Asteroid City” and “Maestro.”
While talking about if she deserves the opportunities she’s had, Hawke said, “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word…there are so many...

Maya Hawke has accepted the term “nepo baby.”
The Stranger Things star, daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, recently opened up to The Times of London about her path to Hollywood, acknowledging that she’s had an advantage because of her parents.
While considering whether she deserves the success she’s received in the industry, Hawke said, “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone. I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles.”
Hawke said she’s “comfortable” choosing the second option and embracing her nepotism, even if it leads to jokes.

Sony has dated a new film in its Insidious horror franchise from Blumhouse Productions for release on August 29, 2025, the studio revealed Thursday evening.
No further details about the project were disclosed, but this is not the Jeremy Slater-helmed Thread: An Insidious Tale, a spin-off starring Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, on which we were first to report.
Marking the sixth entry in the franchise, this new Insidious film comes on the heels of Insidious: The Red Door, an entry marking franchise star Patrick Wilson’s feature directorial debut, which grossed over $189 million at the worldwide box office.

Sony announced on Thursday that its new I Know What You Did Last Summer film from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) will be released via Columbia Pictures on July 18, 2025.
Scripted by Leah McKendrick (Scrambled), the film’s plot is under wraps for now, but stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are expected to return. Neil Moritz is producing.
Launching the careers of Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, the franchise kicked off with 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, which introduced viewers to four friends who’ve accidentally run over a pedestrian while driving on a coastal road one night. In their panic, they decide to dispose of the body in the ocean and vow never to speak of the incident again. However, a year later, they start receiving cryptic messages from someone who seems to know about their dark secret. The situation...

Sophie Turner is breaking her silence about the days following her split from Joe Jonas in September 2023.
The actress sat down with British Vogue to discuss her upcoming series, Joan, the six-part ITV drama that follows the true story of Britain’s notorious jewel thief Joan Hannington. During the conversation, the Game of Thrones star got candid about her split from the Jonas brother and how much she was affected by the reports alleging she was a bad mother who liked to party.
“I mean, those were the worst few days of my life,” Turner told the publication. “I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States, and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out.”
She continued, “It hurt...

Sophie Turner hasn’t acted a whole lot since “Game of Thrones” ended in 2019. She was in a Quibi show called “Wilderness,” had a viral cameo in Netflix movie “Do Revenge,” and was part of the ensemble in the Max limited series “The Staircase.” But she hasn’t had a lead role in a prominent series of her own.
But that’s changing, as Turner has signed on to star in “Haven” (working title), a British crime thriller that’s coming to Prime Video.
Turner will play Zara, an ordinary employee at a pension fund management company called Lochmill Capital, who is thrust into an extraordinary situation when a gang of thieves invade the office and force her and her friend Luke to transfer billions of pounds worth of pension funds. Meanwhile, Dci Rhys, a recently relapsed gambling addict, has to stave off his own financial ruin while he investigates the complex,...

Following a gala closing night celebration featuring Steve Buscemi and his film “The Listener,” the 2024 Sarasota Film Festival has announced its awards — with several prominent indies taking the top prizes. This 26th edition of the Florida festival celebrating independent film gave the Narrative Feature Jury Prize to Josh Margolin’s Sundance breakout “Thelma,” starring June Squibb and the late Richard Roundtree. “Sugarcane” won the Documentary Feature Jury Prize.
Speaking for the narrative feature jury, filmmaker Alex Hedison, in awarding the prize to “Thelma,” said the group found the movie to celebrate “what Hollywood cinema so infrequently does: age. The extraordinary performances by June Squib and Richard Roundtree are at the center of ‘Thelma,’ surrounded by an excellent supporting cast who serve as a surrogate for the audience in reminding them of the significance of living their best lives with the kind of action and adventure life affords us if we...
