SNL aka The Bowen Yang Show
Well, season 50 of SNL opened with the takeover complete. What used to be an ensemble show is clearly no longer. Nearly every single skit had Bowen front and center, so much so that at times I thought he might as well have been the host.
I don't have any problem with Bowen as a performer per se, but seeing him nonstop got boring. Especially when every character he does is just a slight variation of himself, and there's this whole other cast that could be performing as well. His JD Vance was a lazy miss, too.
Speaking of JD, overall though I thought the political cold open was decent as far as those go, but the SNL writers prove once again they are lazy hacks making the same jokes over and over again.
Joe Biden, get this: he's OLD! That joke has never been done before I bet! Not on Jimmy Fallon a trillion times already. Definitely not stale, guys!
Jean Smart? Barely saw her. I mean, except the opening monologue. But maybe they just didn't know what to do with her, because that opening was..a choice. A really odd one. Did Jean have a lounge singing career I was unaware of?
Weekend update was okay but the side character bits went on too long. Yet again more Bowen scene chewing as well.
SNL is in an okay state, but it's starting its big season 50 in a pretty lackluster way.
