Global challenges require global solutions. COPUOS has been at the forefront of consensually adopting international guidelines over the last 20 years, on Space Debris Mitigation and the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities, agreeing definitions on space sustainability, working with industry and States to implement the guidelines (see examples from Astroscale Slingshot Aerospace, ISO - International Organization for Standardization European Space Agency - ESA German Aerospace Center (DLR) and many others here: https://lnkd.in/eRhgzVQP), and developing possible new guidelines and capacity-building through the Working Group on Long-Term Sustainability. It's important not to re-invent the wheel and focus on concrete action. LTS Guideline D.2 addresses Managing Dpace Debris. United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in our capacity of maintaining the UN Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space on behalf of the Secretary General António Guterres, will work with countries to determine which objects can be de-orbited. This will contribute to 1️⃣highlighting the size of the market 2️⃣providing greater certainty to incentivise investment 3️⃣scaling practical solutions that Member States can support by codifying specific guidelines for ADR through #COPUOS
At the recent International Telecommunication Union, Aarti Holla-Maini, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), emphasized crucial actions for securing the long-term sustainability of space. 🌏 The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space has developed binding guidelines that, when integrated into national regulations, form a solid framework for sustainable space exploration. Key focus areas for United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA): 💫 Active Debris Removal 💫 On-Orbit Servicing 💫 Data Collection 💫 Space Traffic Coordination https://lnkd.in/eDPd-CnJ #UnitedNations #SpaceImpulse #OuterSpace

🌍 At the G20 Space Economy Leaders Meeting in Brazil, UNOOSA is joining global leaders in exploring how space technology can drive innovation, economic growth, and address our planet’s most pressing challenges. As the world grapples with climate change, food and water insecurity, and the widening digital divide, space has become an essential tool for solutions. From monitoring deforestation to tracking greenhouse gas emissions, satellites provide critical real-time data that helps nations take decisive action. 🌱🛰️ The meeting emphasizes the need for greater cooperation—countries working together through data sharing, joint missions, and harmonized policies to ensure space remains a driver for sustainable development. Equitable access to space services and capacity building are crucial in empowering all nations, especially developing countries, to use space data to address global challenges. Space technology offers unprecedented opportunities for climate action and disaster preparedness, but to fully realize its potential, we must ensure space is preserved for future generations and its benefits are shared by all. #G20 #SpaceEconomy #SpaceForAll #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Innovation G20 Brasil 2024

Advancing Space Sustainability: Insights from UNOOSA at the ITU Forum

🇺🇳 UNOOSA and the International Telecommunication Union meet at the ITU #SpaceSustainability Forum. Here are the key takeaways from Director Aarti Holla-Maini‘s remarks: 1️⃣ All eyes are on the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space to deliver global space governance. COPUOS has developed 65 years of treaties, principles, resolutions, and guidelines. 📜 They‘re only words on paper unless implemented. 2️⃣ It’s not realistic to expect global consensus on a new multilateral treaty that has buy-in from all nations. However, the Guidelines for the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space (#LTSGuidelines) are binding when implemented into national legislation and regulation - we must support States in achieving consistent implementation. 🌐 3️⃣ #UNOOSA, as Secretariat to the inter-governmental COPUOS, is working to develop a common understanding of different aspects of space sustainability. 🌍 4️⃣ This starts with supporting the establishment of national space laws & policies and helping States understand what the different components of space sustainability actually mean. What does data-sharing mean? What data is it? How do operators act on conjunction assessments? We need to level the playing field in terms of knowledge & understanding around such matters so States can take effective decisions. 💡 5️⃣ UNOOSA has been collecting Guideline B.1 data since 2019 - now looking at how to operationalize it as a core component of Space Traffic Coordination. 🛰️ 6️⃣ Concerning Active Debris Removal and On-Orbit Servicing - working with nations to identify space objects that can be deorbited and creating the conditions to scale the market for ADR and for industry to invest more in technological development. 📈 7️⃣ Not reinventing the wheel - Member States have solutions for guidelines for ADR that COPUOS can review and expand on in line with LTS Guideline D.2 'Investigate and consider new measures to manage the space debris population in the long-term.' 🌌 8️⃣ UNOOSA is taking a pragmatic and holistic approach to advancing space sustainability using all avenues available. Through COPUOS to develop new guidelines and mechanisms for coordination, through capacity-building, and delivering services to nations that support implementation of what has already been agreed and have shared political will behind it. 🤝 #COPUOS2024
