Tekst op het monument:

In de woning Statenweg 147 werd op 14 mei 1940 het Duitse ultimatum overhandigd: Geef U over of Uw stad wordt vernietigd. Rotterdam werd grotendeels vernietigd. Honderden verloren hun leven, duizenden hun huis, hun bestaan, het hart van hun stad. Vervolging, terreur, roof en honger volgden. Maar ook direct: verzet. Vijf jaren later kwam de bevrijding. Voorbijganger, U staat waar Nederland werd gezet voor dreiging met vernietiging van Rotterdam en van andere steden. Toen die dreiging werd uitgevoerd gaf Nederland zich over. Erasmus zei in 1517: ‘De onrechtvaardigste vrede is beter dan de rechtvaardigste oorlog’.
