Heworth Grange Comprehensive School is a comprehensive high school in the Gateshead area of Tyne and Wear, England. It educates over 1,500 students, aged 11-18, including a sixth form. The school has specialist status as an Arts College, attained in 2005.[2] The Headteacher is Brian Huddart.

Development

This school was the first in the North East to be awarded funds under the Building Schools for the Future scheme, in February 2004.[3]

There are proposals, under consideration, to merge this school with Thomas Hepburn Secondary School in Felling.[4]

IT facilities

Heworth Grange has a modern computer suite, called the CLC (City Learning Centre), used by the primary schools in the area.

Popularity

Most schools in the North East have falling roles. By contrast, this school is has such a high reputation that it is consistently over-subscribed year on year.[5]

School fatality

School fatalities in the United Kingdom are extremely rare. In December 1998, 16-year-old Darren Carruthers died of brain damage following a playground fight. A 15-year-old was eventually acquitted of his manslaughter at Newcastle Crown Court.[6]
