Rogers is a patronymic surname, deriving from the given name of Roger commonly used by the Normans. It is now found commonly throughout the British Isles, particularly in southern and western England and also in Wales. The surname also occurs in Scotland as Rodgers. The surname was taken to Ireland in Cromwellian times, where it became used as an Anglicisation of the Gaelic name Mac Ruaidhrí, or "Mac Ruairí" an Ulster name meaning "son of red king".

In England and Wales it ranks as the 77th most common surname.[2] According to the 1990 United States Census, 'Rogers' ranked fifty-fourth in frequency among all reported surnames, accounting for 0.12% of the population.[3]

In Cantonese community, "Rogers" is transliterated into "罗渣士", a very indecent derogative name, but so far this transliteration is accepted from average people bearing this family name to the telecommunication giant like Rogers Inc. "罗渣士" is pronounced as "Luo Zha Shi" in Mandarin. "Luo" is also a Chinese family name, "Zha" however means "Scum", "people living in the lowest level of the society, worthless losers", "Shi" is a suffix used for denoting a kind of person. So together, "罗渣士","Luo Zha Shi", means "a worthless loser from the Luo family".
