Dieuson Octave, (born June 11, 1997), better known by his stage name Kodak Black, is an American rapper born and raised in Pompano Beach, Florida.[10]

Early life and career

Dieuson Octave was born in Pompano Beach, Florida. His parents were immigrants from Haiti. Kodak was raised by his mother in Golden Acres, a public housing project in Pompano Beach.[10]

Kodak began rapping with his cousins at age 12 while in elementary school. He then became affiliated with the local rap group "Brutal Youngnz", and then with the "Kolyons".[3][10]

Kodak was placed into a juvenile detention center three times in one year, and then placed on probation.[3]

In 2014, Kodak was working towards his high school diploma at Blanche Ely High School.[10][11]

In 2015, Canadian rapper Drake posted a video of himself dancing to one of Kodak's singles, Skrt, which raised his stardom.[12]

In October 2015, Kodak was arrested in Pompano Beach and charged with robbery, battery, false imprisonment of a child, and possession of cannabis.[2] He was released from custody, and shortly after signed a deal with Atlantic Records.[4]

Kodak and rapper Lil Uzi Vert announced their intention to partner for a national tour called the "Parental Advisory Tour" in 2016.[13]

In April 2016, Kodak was arrested in Hallandale Beach, Florida and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of cannabis, and fleeing from officers.[14]

In May 2016, Kodak was arrested in Broward County, Florida and charged with armed robbery and false imprisonment. He was detained in custody.[11][15]

Music

In December 2013, Kodak released his first mixtape, Project Baby.[3]

On December 26, 2015, Kodak released the mixtape, Institution.[16]

On February 19, 2016, French Montana released a single from his upcoming second studio album MC4, Lockjaw, which features Kodak Black.[17]

On June 11, 2016, Kodak released the mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac on his birthday while incarcerated.[18]

The subject matter of Kodak's music is frequently about "previous and future criminal misdeeds", and Octave has been influenced by rappers Lil Boosie and Chief Keef.[10]

Kodak was features in The New Yorker, which described his "manifestly youthful voice" and "mutinous sound", and stated "Octave joins other young rappers who have rejected an old-school emphasis on lyrical variety, individualism, and personal catharsis".[19]
