A star system known as "V Sagittae" is expected to go supernova this year (+/- 11 years)

- The lease held by the Pitjantjatjara people on Uluru to the Australian government is set to expire.
2088
- The University of Bologna, oldest university in the world will turn 1000 years old.
- October 27 - Mercury occults Jupiter for the first time since 1708, but very close to the Sun and impossible to view with the naked eye.[1]
2089
- May–June – Insect Magicicada broods X (17-year) and XIX (13-year) will emerge simultaneously. This will be the first time this will occur since 1868; next time will be in 2310. This event occurs only once in every 221 years.[2]
- This year will be the last time Rosh Hashanah falls on September 5.
