Rose State is primarily designed for students who plan to transfer to other colleges.

The college was originally named Oscar Rose Junior College when classes first started on September 21 1970 but was later renamed to Rose State College effective on November 1 1983. The college has a regular enrollment of 7,000 students and covers over 116 acres (469,000 m²).
