Information

The London Underground, Underground or Tube is a rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and neighbouring areas of Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in the UK. The first section opened in 1863, and was the first underground railway system in the world, and, starting in 1890, it was also the first to operate electric trains. It is usually referred to as the Underground or the Tube—the latter deriving from the shape of the system's deep-bore tunnels—although about 55% of the network is above ground.

The earlier lines of the present London Underground network were built by various private companies. Apart from the main line railways, they became part of an integrated transport system in 1933 when the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) or London Transport was created. The underground network became a single entity in 1985, when the UK government created London Underground Limited (LUL). Since 2003 LUL has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Transport for London (TfL), the statutory corporation responsible for most aspects of the transport system in Greater London, which is run by a board and a commissioner appointed by the Mayor of London.

The Underground has 270 stations and about 400 km (250 miles) of track, making it the longest metro system in the world by route length. It also has one of the highest number of stations. In 2007, more than 1bn passenger journeys were recorded, making it the third busiest metro system in Europe after Paris and Moscow.

The tube map, with its schematic non-geographical layout and colour-coded lines, is considered a design classic, and many other transport maps worldwide have been influenced by it.

The tramway dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world. It is run by Blackpool Transport (BTS) as part of the Metro Coastlines network, owned by Blackpool Borough Council. The tramway runs for 11 miles (17.7 km) and carries 6,500,000 passengers each year. It is also one of only a few[quantify] operational tramways in the world that operate using double-deck tram systems,[dubiousdiscuss] others including the Hong Kong Tramways system and Alexandria Tram in Egypt.

Information

Manchester Metrolink (branded and usually referred to as Metrolink) is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. It consists of three lines which converge in Manchester city centre and serve the surrounding towns of Bury, Altrincham and Eccles. The system is owned by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) and operated under contract by Stagecoach Group.

Metrolink trams run on the street in the city centre, but most of the routes in the suburbs use former heavy rail lines. Several extensions to the system are currently under construction or have been proposed. Late in 2008 works started extending the system to East Didsbury, Ashton-under-Lyne, Oldham, Rochdale, Mediacity:uk and Manchester Airport. The expansions will increase the system's length from 37km (23 mi) to 97km (60.2 mi) with at least 99 stops. On the 13th May 2009, funding was finally secured for phase 3b, with a small rise in council taxes, and work will start from late 2009.[2][3]. Further potential extensions to Stockport and the Trafford Centre are envisaged, subject to funding.

Information

The Midland Metro is a light-rail or tram line in the West Midlands of England between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton via West Bromwich and Wednesbury.

It is owned and promoted by Centro, and operated by a subsidiary of the National Express Group (NEG) under the brand name Travel Midland Metro (TMM).

Midland Metro carries about five million passengers annually, about one third of that predicted by Centro in the planning stage.

Information

Nottingham Express Transit (NET) is a light-rail tramway in the Nottingham area in England. The first line opened to the public on 9 March 2004, having cost £200 million to construct. The scheme took sixteen years from conception to implementation. It is operated by Nottingham Tram Consortium, a 50:50 partnership between Transdev and Nottingham City Transport.

Information

Supertram is a tram network in Sheffield, England. It is owned and operated in partnership between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), who own the infrastructure, and Stagecoach Group who operate and maintain the trams, through their Stagecoach Supertram branded subsidiary.

Following a parliamentary act in 1985 authorising the scheme, the system was built by SYPTE at a cost of £240 million, and opened in stages between 1994 and 1995. It was initially operated by South Yorkshire Supertram Ltd (SYSL), a wholly owned subsidiary company of SYPTE. After lower than expected passenger revenue, SYSL was sold to Stagecoach for £1.15 million at the end of 1997. With the sale of SYSL, Stagecoach gained the concession to maintain and operate the Supertram trams until 2024.

Launched in an initial light grey livery, following the takeover by Stagecoach the trams wore the Stagecoach corporate livery from 1997. From 2006 the trams were refurbished, and a new dedicated Supertram blue based livery was launched, rolled out by 2008.

Ticketing is integrated with the Stagecoach Sheffield bus operations, purchased by Stagecoach in 2005.

Information

Tramlink (originally and sometimes still called Croydon Tramlink) is a tramway system in south London which began operation in May 2000. The service is operated by London Tramlink, part of Transport for London (TfL).

Tramlink serves seven National Rail stations but has only one interchange with London Underground; one of the factors leading to its creation was that the area around Croydon has no Underground service.

Tramlink runs on a mixture of street track shared with other traffic, dedicated track in public roads, and off-street track consisting of new rights-of-way, former railway lines, and one section of alignment, though not track, shared with a third rail electrified Network Rail line.

Information

The Tyne and Wear Metro, also known as the Metro, is a metro system in North East England, serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and Sunderland. It opened in 1980 and in 2007–2008 provided 40 million public journeys on its network of nearly 78 kilometres (48 mi). It is operated by Nexus and is one of only two underground metro-type systems in the UK outside London, the other being the Glasgow Subway.

File:Docklands Light Railway logo.svg

Information

The Docklands Light Railway is a light metro or light rail system opened on 31 August 1987 to serve the redeveloped Docklands area of East London, England. It currently covers several areas of London, reaching Stratford to the north, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal.

The DLR is currently operated under a concession awarded by Transport for London to Serco Docklands Ltd, a joint organisation of the former DLR management team and Serco Group. The system is owned by DLR Limited, part of the London Rail division of Transport for London (TfL) which also manages London Overground and London Tramlink, but not London Underground, which is a separate division of TfL.

In 2006 the DLR carried over 60 million passengers, and has been extended several times, with work and proposals continuously ongoing. Although it has some similarities to other mass transportation systems in London such as the London Underground, DLR trains are not compatible with either the Underground network, Crossrail or the wider railway network in Britain.

Information

South West Trains (SWT) is the trading name of a train operating company operating in the United Kingdom, providing train services to the south-west of London, chiefly in Greater London and the counties of Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Somerset, Berkshire, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight, the area was before 1923 roughly that of the London and South Western Railway company, and so led the choice of company name.

The South West Trains franchise is the largest passenger rail franchise in the UK and is also particularly complex due of the vast number and variety of different services operated. The Stagecoach Group operates the South West Trains franchise and has done so ever since privatisation.
