More templates

Why does something like this not really show the collapsible option stuff: Template:Foreign relations of the Netherlands?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:50, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
it had {{documentation}} on the page, which indicates that there should be a Template:Foreign relations of the Netherlands/doc page, however it does not exist. I fixed it. Frietjes (talk) 14:06, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why did Template:Norwegian film list let me add collapsible option?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:59, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
if you don't see [show]/[hide] links in the template, then adding the template would not make sense, since there is no collapsible state. Frietjes (talk) 14:06, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
{{riksdagsledamöter}} is used on over a half dozen templates at Category:Sweden politics and government templates.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:43, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

strange, the entire template is wrapped in <includeonly>...</includeonly>, which makes the <includeonly>...</includeonly> nested inside look strange on the template page, but no problem with the transclusions. I will fix it, and attempt to fix the script. luckily, this is very rare. Frietjes (talk) 14:32, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

HTML tables to wikitables

I don't if you could help in converting HTML tables into wikitables. CHECKWIKI error 31 provides a huge list of pages with HTML tables: https://toolserver.org/~sk/cgi-bin/checkwiki/checkwiki.cgi?project=enwiki&view=only&id=31 (7,000 pages!) -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:53, 9 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You might be interested in Wikipedia:AutoEd/tablestowikitext.js. It's not perfect, but it does a reasonable job of converting HTML tables to wikitables. The main thing to watch out for is when the table is being passed to a template. Other issues include if the table is indented, or wrapped in a center tag. That said, it saves quite a bit of time if you are converting one. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:37, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just a reminder that you should always check the output to make sure it looks acceptable before saving to avoid bugs like this one. I will try to fix those bugs, but there are still bugs in the code. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:59, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am still in the experimental phase of AutoEd. I got excited when I discovered what your tool does! Please help by fixing some of the pages. :) -- 01:23, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Two requests

Hello, Frietjes – hope all is well.

When you have a moment, I'd appreciate what you make of the following two situations: first, some Navbox backgrounds that seem to've disappeared; and, second, is it possible to compress (remove the repetition) in the "Cause/s" code (label/data5) here?

CsDix (talk) 07:03, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I, personally, don't see an visual difference between the before and after in your navbox diff (but keep in mind my vision isn't as functional as other editors). as far as the repetition goes, could you provide an input example that creates this repetition? Frietjes (talk) 16:11, 23 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the navbox report. Were you looking using a PC or Mac (and, if a Mac, which browser)..?
Regarding the "repetition", sorry not to be clearer: what I mean is whether something like a single #switch that takes the three parameters (cause/cause1, cause2, cause3) in turn is possible rather than the current three separate but identical #switch:es..? CsDix (talk) 06:43, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I typically use FF on Linux, but I have access to a Windows 7 PC. the infobox aircraft occurrence looks complicated. I don't immediately see a way to split it up, but I haven't looked at it in too much detail. Frietjes (talk) 14:49, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was wondering if something might occur to you at such a glance, but it hasn't – which is fine. Once it's time to ask for the sandbox version to be implemented, I think I'll leave the cause1 #switch spaced as currently while compressing the spacing in the identical cause2 and cause3 #switch:es. CsDix (talk) 16:10, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if this template might work better as a Navbox-with-collapsible-sections – or is simply too big..? CsDix (talk) 06:54, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

splitting it into multiple, more targeted navboxes would probably be the best idea. Frietjes (talk) 14:46, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Perhaps I'll split it into some "Navbox |child" sections rather than Navbox-with-collapsible-sections, so they'll be easier to separate (if that's what people want). CsDix (talk) 16:27, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Attention, navbox fundi

There is a problem with Template:Current Police and Crime Commissioners of England and Wales and I can't see how to fix it. I suspect it is arising from lua.

Basically, this uses {{navbox with columns}} for three columns, then a summary line as "below", followed by {{reflist|group=note}}. I guess it used to work.

But now the {{reflist}} is being ignored; I tried <references /...> but it made no difference. It looks OK if you just go to the template, but when you try to edit then you get the error stuff. Effect is to cause all its users, i.e. every Police Commisioner page, to appear on the Category:Pages with missing references list.

I left a message on the talk page, but it looks like no-one ever visits - I was the first. I'm telling you because I know you're generally involved in navboxes. Or failing that, that you know someone who is.

John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Tue 19:43, wikitime= 11:43, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

using <ref>...</ref> in navboxes is a bad idea, since they are typically placed after the Reference section. also, the use of group=note is also a bad idea, since there may be other uses of group=note elsewhere in the article. I switched it to use a standard sup ref with note.Frietjes (talk) 14:45, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why didn't I think of that, instead of banging my head on the desk an hour?! There's none so blind as those who cannot see...
It wasn't my doing, it just started not working. I'm sure it's lua-based, but who cares?!
Thanks

Collapsible option

Hi, please see this thread. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:01, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

Codewise, your version less elegant, no?

Also presentation-wise: subsections now run from one into the next, without articulation (small gap) between them.

(Also, subheadings' italics lost – or was that deliberate too?)

CsDix (talk) 18:25, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

feel free to add the italics, but I don't think it is less elegant, given the reduction in code complexity. Frietjes (talk) 22:54, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's also lost the articulation between the subsections though..? CsDix (talk) 13:19, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
then use a dfn list? Frietjes (talk) 14:08, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A "dfn list"...? CsDix (talk) 17:41, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I don't know of any "dfn list". There is a <dfn>...</dfn> element in HTML, but I suspect that Frietjes is thinking of the semicolon/colon wikimarkup (as used at the start of this post). This is actually an association list composed of one or more <dt>...</dt> and <dd>...</dd> elements, enclosed in a <dl>...</dl> element. Prior to HTML 5, this structure was known as a definition list, which is where the confusion may have arisen. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:53, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this information, Redrose. Is it what you meant, Frietjes – and, if so, how is it meant to address the subsection spacing..? CsDix (talk) 17:06, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
yes, this is what I meant. it addresses the connection between headings and lists by introducing a formal relationship between the two. Frietjes (talk) 22:30, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, but how can it do what {{Sidebar subsection}} does more elegantly..? CsDix (talk) 23:36, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Refbegin

Since you did this, am I right to think that this one is correct? -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:31, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

why are you doing this at all? these are WP:NOTBROKEN, and that was apparently the only thing you did in that edit. I'm pretty sure you other editors have complained about this sort of thing in the past. Frietjes (talk) 14:45, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is this encyclopedic..?

Hello again, Frietjes:

Just wondered whether you thought this article was (sufficiently) encyclopedic..?

CsDix (talk) 21:26, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

that's a mess. too many loosely related navboxes. the infobox is not necessary. the referencing is a mess as well. I would try to clean it up, but I wouldn't know where to start. you should see if someone like BrownHairedGirl can clean it up or suggest what to do. or as Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. Infoboxes, geocodes and maps

Hello! Do you often edit in this field? I don't, but if you do you might try bringing some uniformity throughout. Its a Herculean task! But something needs to be done. All infoboxes use different patters for adding coordinates and maps. I recently added coordinates to various dams in Maharashtra and had got used to Template:Infobox dam. Then i decided to switch to train stations and its a different world there. Haven't there been any discussion on regularizing all these infoboxes? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 06:24, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

there has been some effort to try to make the parameters used by infoboxes more uniform, but it is indeed a Herculean task. quite a bit of the effort has been focused on birth_date, death_date, image, image_size, caption parameters. however, the next step definitely should be coordinates (e.g., latd vs. lat_d vs. lat_deg). Frietjes (talk) 15:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On a second thought, i guess this uniformity won't be needed. Probably Wikidata has plans to cover this. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 08:19, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

going round in circles?

[Actually I thought I'd sent this this morning, but the internet here being what it is, apparently I didn't.]

Someone has changed the image_map on Bantayan, Cebu {{infobox settlement}}. The new one is wider than what it replaces, and it seems like mapsize parameter has no effect. I'm sure I went round this loop in November. Is there anything I can do? Main problem is that because infobox is now wider, not-infobox space is narrower, meaning things no longer fit nicely, so lots of white space.

Actually, I think all the changes are quite ridiculous and un-encyclopedic, reducing the information available.

John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Fri 15:20, wikitime= 07:20, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I increased the size of the location map to match the other map. there is going to be a lower limit on the width of the infobox due to non-wrapping elements within the box. however, you could probably get it down to around 225px by adding imagesize = 225px for the top image, and resizing the other two 250s to 225. Frietjes (talk) 14:57, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think the important thing was the px after the number. John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Sat 00:10, wikitime= 16:10, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
if things are set up correctly in the template, you should be able to (eventually) omit the px for the imagesize and map_size, but you cannot include the px for the pushpin_map size. I say should since that is the direction things are going at the moment with the new lua module for handling images. Frietjes (talk) 16:13, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Curious

I contacted TonyTheTiger about why s/he was adding a state parameter to county navboxes such as {{Colusa County, California}}, and s/he referred me to you. What use do you envision for this new parameter? —Stepheng3 (talk) 04:22, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Frietjes, please note that all navboxes using {{US county navigation box}} use the collapse_state parameter to specify whether it is collapsed or expanded. The state parameter, which predates the implementation of the collapsible feature, specifies the US state where the county is located. Therefore, this edit is valid, whereas Tony's modifications like this one causes a conflict and thus was reverted by other users. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (talk) 07:54, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
yes, thank you, I will correct the script. as for "why" TT is adding either parameter is not something that I can answer. I just wrote the script to make it easier to add the parameter. Frietjes (talk) 13:49, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Image array

A balloon image with a link to the balloon article.

Could you edit the template so that the images used have a link to their respective articles? For example when you click the image on the right, it will take you to the article for balloons rather than Wikipedia's image summary page. Is this possible to recreate in the template? --PRODUCER (TALK) 06:30, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

done. however, be very very careful. we are not allowed to do this if the image is not public domain. the linking to the file page is necessary for any image with a license that requires attribution. Frietjes (talk) 14:48, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What to do? Action needed

There's a guy actively renaming a lot of Philippine pages. I think s/he should be stopped: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Gian_de_la_cruz

and reverted

I don't know how to do it.

John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Wed 15:48, wikitime= 07:48, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[My use of 'he' etc isn't meant to signify anything. It's quicker is all.]

Actually this is the user who persistently made nonsense edits to the pages. I sent him a uw‑3rr a couple of weeks ago. He had done it to other pages too, so looking at his contributions, he's taken copies of the pages he wanted and saved them into different names.

I'm sure it can all be unwound, just a pain. Calling pages "City of ..." is against the rules, and I don't expect others will be pleased to see whole provinces renamed.

I've copied this to others - I hope one of you is up!

John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Wed 16:07, wikitime= 08:07, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the usual coarse of action is (1) ask the user to stop, (2a) if the user refuses to stop, and it's really serious, involving a massive number of edits, ask at WP:ANI, (2b) if the user refuses to stop, and it is less serious, only involving a few articles, then start a thread on the talk page an invite others to comment. the WP:ANI option is really only a measure of last resort. I am not an admin, so I can't do anything more than what you can do. Frietjes (talk) 14:57, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just thought you might have a better idea than me. Other people have got involved; the pages are reverted (I think). I just panicked a little because I thought the renames were going on as I was typing. [Memo to self: look at watchlist more often!] John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Thu 00:39, wikitime= 16:39, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The user carried on making the same changes despite several warnings from others. In the end s/he was blocked indefinitely but this was subsequently modified to 48 hours, so I expect s/he'll be back Sunday morning doing exactly the same damage.

Semi a propos, I noticed that Tacloban is also listed on two categories: Category:Articles with Tagalog language external links and same for waray-waray language. In fact these are hidden categories, or would be except the latter does not exist (but still has several members). Investigation showed these were undocumented additions to the {{language icon}} template; in fact that's almost all it does. I tried removing those templates, because they're pretty useless. The waray category disappeared, but the tagalog one is still there. How do I go about finding where it gets attached? It must be inside a template mustn't it?

John of Cromer in Philippines (talk) mytime= Fri 22:38, wikitime= 14:38, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

you don't really need language icons in the infobox, since the information is in the first sentence of the text. removing them does fix the problem. Frietjes (talk) 14:52, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the {{lang/}} templates wherever, because they all added to hidden categories. That might be OK if there were any real other-language content on the page, but all there is is/are the place names. PH infoboxes

Hi Frietjes, the Philippines map is set to 200(px) to limit the length of the infobox. There is no reason to have the maps the same size. I am merely creating a consistent look for the PH LGU infoboxes that was already determined a long time ago before my involvement. As for the colums, how is setting the column width better than the default that automatically adjusts to the browser width? BTW, stop shadowing me. -- P 1 9 9   18:00, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

there is no reason to override the default width for any of the images or maps in the infobox. arbitrarily reducing the width of one but not the others looks odd, and makes for an inconsistent appearance across all of WP, not just in an a walled garden of PH articles. the default setting for {{div col}} is to use two columns. if I use a narrow browser, this means that the columns will be compressed and unnecessarily line wrapping. if I use a wide browser, this means there will be an excessive amount of whitespace, which is presumably what is being avoided by using multicolumns. a better option is to simply specify the width of each column, and the the number of columns be adjusted depending on the width of the browser. I will ignore your bad faith comment about shadowing. let's be constructive here. Frietjes (talk) 19:47, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • On the other hand, on a wide browser with a specific column width, you end up with several tiny short lists that also look odd. On a narrow browser with a specific column width, there may be just 1 column, even if there is still space. So this (and the map width) is purely a personal preference issue. Since 100's of PH LGU's have already been made consistent in look, why revert back? I'd love to see a consistent look across all settlement infoboxes, but most countries have their own walled-garden infoboxes... -- P 1 9 9   20:45, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
and {{div col}} doesn't work on all browsers, so changing it from the older multi-col method is probably not advisable. the idea that "most countries have their own walled-garden infoboxes" is a poor argument for continuing the practice here. Frietjes (talk) 22:32, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TfD template substitution

At this edit you asked in the edit summary "why would you want to substitute this template?". Answer: because Template:Template for discussion/doc says to do so in an explicit hatnote and all the examples. Because the /dated version of it does not have its own doc, I assumed the doc should apply to it. Does it not or is the doc wrong (and should it be fixed)? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 13:08, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

you substitute {{tfd}}, which creates {{template for discussion/dated}}. the instructions do not say to substitute {{template for discussion/dated}}. the clue is the massive mess it makes. Frietjes (talk) 15:45, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So, you're saying that TfD/d is not supposed to be used directly? I must have looked at another TfD to see what template to use, saw the TfD/d there, and so used it. I later saw in Tfd/doc that I was supposed to subst it, assumed TfD/d was a variant that I was also supposed to subst, and did so. TfD/d should maybe have a note to the effect that it is not to be used directly? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:24, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
yes, that is correct, you substitute {{tfd}}, which creates {{template for discussion/dated}}. you do not continue with a second round of substitution. it is exactly the same situation as {{afd}} and other very commonly used deletion discussion tags. to make it even harder to do the wrong thing, I made this change to the dated template, which will now make it nearly impossible to incorrectly substitute it. Template:Marriage

As you perhaps saw, the TFD for {{Marriage}} got closed as "no consensus". After examining the way this template works, I've proposed removing many of the parameters that many of the TFD participants found unnecessary, problematic, objectionable, etc. The proposal is in the "Removing parameters" section of Template talk:Marriage; would you please go there and offer your opinions? I apologise for the boilerplate style of writing; I'm doing my best to notify all participants in the TFD equally, so I'm copy/pasting the same thing to everyone's talk page regardless of how they voted. Statistics template

Hi Frietjes!

I reverted you because I was in the middle of reorganizing part of the template.

I looked at your edits, and I'm not sure that they are improvements here. The "Category(Ex1, Ex2)" format encourages the item to be on one line, which is an advantage when the abbreviated entry for Ex1 is harder to parse without the Category() wrapper.

I reply here because few monitor the talk page of a template. You are welcome to copy my comment to the talk page of the template or to the statistics project if you like, of course.

see the revision before mine. Frietjes (talk) 19:39, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that is not helping me understand. I apologize if that is frustrating at all. I see my revision (Eliminating Template:Marriage extraneous parameters. Commented out useful information that was in template until template emits h-cards.) and making sure all three marriages uniformly used the template; then I see a revision by Lugnuts (talk · contribs) adding a referenced statement, removing a Portal link, and adding a references section; finally I see your revision removing all three of the applications of {{Marriage}} and the commented out data that went with it. I'm not sure what I am missing and would appreciate some enlightenment. Thank you. Technical 13 (talk) 20:37, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
did you actually look at this revision? when I say look at it, I mean look at the infobox. Frietjes (talk) 20:39, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've re-reverted it and fixed the invalid time issue. That is something in the template I'll fix when I have the time to actually work on that template. Thanks for pointing it out, even if it was an odd way to do so. Technical 13 (talk) 21:20, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted your changes since they have introduced incorrect information in the html source. these marriages did not happen today. Frietjes (talk) 21:23, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are likely about 2,000 more pages that have a similar problem, perhaps a better course of action is to fix the template instead of removing all of the usage of it since the whole point of the project I was working on is explained Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2013 April 3#Template:Marriage and on it's talkpage → Template talk:Marriage#Removing parameters. I'm working on the template currently myself... Technical 13 (talk) 21:45, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
remove all the hidden garbage generated by the template, and you won't have to worry about this issue since editors will be able to see what is being generated (assuming they actually look at the infobox after making an edit, which is a big assumption). Frietjes (talk) 21:47, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All better. There is a plan for that template to emit microformat metadata, but all of that will be figured out in a sandbox before going live into that template. Technical 13 (talk) 21:55, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did not use the ugly grey/blue colors they had used on it before it was reverted earlier. I also took steps to ensure the colors I used were in fact, still able to provide contrast. Why is it a violation of WP:DEVIATIONS, especially if many university/college navboxes do the same? ViperSnake151  Talk  01:59, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

so Android is now a university/college? the deviation is from Category:Software templates, which is the category containing the template. when it becomes a college, university, or sports team, then we would start making comparisons with those templates. Problems with ill2

Hi Fretjes, I'm writing to you, as you're one of those who have done edits to Template:Ill2. It's a great little template, but there is a problem with the third language link.

Check the two documentation examples for TC Matic: 1) TC Matic and 2) TC Matic. In both cases, the French link, which is in third position, takes you to the French article for fr:fr instead of to fr:TC Matic. If the order is changed to TC Matic , with two Swedish entries (there are no articles in Afrikaans and Spanish, but there is one in Swedish, so I have added that), you notice that the French link in position 1 now works, as does the last Swedish link (link 4). But the first Swedish link, which now is the third link, takes you to sv:sv. So, there must be a problem in the code for the third link. Unfortunately, I don't feel confident enough to mess with the code, but you seem to have a feel for it, so perhaps you can fix it? I just added it to my own tools on my user page, and when testing it I noticed this problem. Best regards Thomas Blomberg (talk) 16:58, 4 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

chess diagrams

Think you for finding the error in converting diagrams in fortress to the new FEN format.

The old diagrams were left in as comments for a couple of reasons.

  1. There is a big performance penalty when editing or saving an edit of an article with a large number of old-style diagrams. The FEN format avoids that. However, there has been some talk about improving the performance of the old diagrams. The old ones have an image for each square - the FEN takes an image for the board and then makes changes for the squares with pieces. I don't know how to make that change to the template (perhaps you do). If that is done, the old diagrams are left in there so it will be easy to go back to the old format.
  2. It is hard for an editor to visualize a position from an FEN (at least it is for me). Having the old diagrams in as a comment is an aid to the editor. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 21:06, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
the problem is that these will frequently not be updated at the same time, so it is better to use one or the other, but not both (in my opinion). Frietjes (talk) 21:08, 7 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point. But if the old system is improved, it is going to be hard to go back. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 00:15, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
we should be able to make a lua module that helps convert them back. Frietjes (talk) 19:58, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how to do that. Do you know how to modify the old chess diagram to be more efficient, like the FEN version? Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 20:08, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
should be possible, I will work on it this weekend. Frietjes (talk) 20:09, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Augmenting template instructions

Is there a way to augment the instructions on all the CO embedded templates with something so that when they are in edit mode people are reminded that if they are adding an article to the template, add the template to the article and if they are removing an article from the template, remove the template from the article.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:21, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

this sounds like something that would be useful for all navigational boxes? notices that appear in edit mode are controlled by Wikipedia:Editnotice. to have an edit notice appear for all navbox pages would probably be best accomplished with modifications to either {{navbox}} or one of the site-wide CSS/JS files. you should bring this up at WP:VPT to see if anyone has any ideas, or if there is support for this sort of feature. it may be possible to write a script that does an audit of a navbox, checking the list of transclusions against the list of links in the template, but that would take some time to develop. Is the new chess diagram template the default yet? Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 18:19, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

no, not yet. the template is fully protected, so we will need an administrator to change it. and, just to make things more complicated, I have been experimenting with a third version which generates nearly the exact same output of the current non-lua version, but uses lua for everything. it looks like we can make things faster by moving more of it to lua. I will try to find a moment to comment on the latest developments on the chess diagram talk page. Frietjes (talk) 18:29, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Nickelodeon original series and Nicktoons

I'm aware of the recent template merge, I was in support of it. The series that were removed are not Nickelodeon original series (Nicktoons if an animated series). They are owned and produced by other companies. Nickelodeon just purchased the broadcasting rights to air them. Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎, etc.

Frietjes, here's a template merge I would support in a heartbeat: Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎ and Template:Infobox women's college basketball team‎.

Have you ever contemplated a comprehensive merge of all the college sports team infobox templates? With a handful of options, I think all U.S. college sports could be accommodated and the team infoboxes would then have a uniform appearance across all sports. Just a thought . . . . Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:48, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the first is already proposed here. I had thought about the second as well, but it will take more time to work out all the details, since there are differences in the post-season tournament section for various sports. Frietjes (talk) 22:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just posted a comment in support of the merge of men's and women's college basketball templates. That pending merge should be a no-brainer, and you are clearly already on top of the two minor issues to be addressed in the combined template.
The creation of a combined infobox template for all U.S. college sports teams would require a lot of work and the inclusion of several options, but the core information to be included is common to all. Differences in NCAA playoff structure, etc., could be accommodated by options to be toggled as needed. The payoff would be worth the effort. Not only should these infoboxes have a common appearance within a given sport, the teams affiliated with a given university should also have a common appearance and graphics style, and that can only be accomplished by a common template across all college sports teams. I think you would find the college football, basketball and baseball sports projects to be supportive, and the other college sports do not have active/vocal WikiProjects and tend to follow the lead of the football, basketball and baseball projects. I would be grateful for your help in making this happen, but I also understand that you have numerous pending template projects already. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 11:14, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if I can help you there, see Template talk:Collapsible option#Consensus for universal use of template?. I have no real opinion on the addition of the {{collapsible option}} template. the only reason why I created the script was after seeing you add it to hundreds of pages without adding the |state={{{state}}} code. the situation is that neither the template nor the parameter are necessarily needed in most cases. however, the template should only be added if the parameter is present. but, there is no real problem with having the parameter without the template, since that just means the parameter is undocumented. I think most people simply don't care one way or another, but there are a couple editors out there that object to anyone either (a) modifying the state or (b) documenting the feature. I personally don't understand why there is a problem with documenting a feature, but I don't care enough to argue with anyone about it. Frietjes (talk) 15:36, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thank you! Now the discussion on The Rite of Spring brought up "subtitle". Would it be possible to have that in smaller font right below the title, above the pic? (Perhaps the composer also?) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:18, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it to a subheader. currently, it's not in bold, and it doesn't have the same background as the title. both of these things could be easily changed if necessary. I could move the composer up there as well, and added a comment to the code to show where subheader2 would go. Frietjes (talk) 14:38, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox basketball biography

Was there a problem with this code that you commented out? You didn't leave a reason, and I thought it was working OK.—Bagumba (talk) 16:42, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

the main problem is the newline before the <noinclude> which can create extra whitespace in articles that leave a blank line between the infobox and the lead sentence. Frietjes (talk) 16:44, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. But it also seems like you commented out the entire test with the edit before "*** Tracking "league" set without a corresponding "team" set. ***"?—Bagumba (talk) 16:48, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm only semi-proficient at templates. For whatever reason, when I did a "what links here" for Template:Infobox_basketball_biography/league_set_without_team, it showed nothing (though of course it works afterwards) and I misinterpreted the diff of your changes and drew the wrong conclusion. BTW, I notice that "what links here" seems to take a long time to find all the matches. Is there a general rule of thumb of why and how long one should wait to get a "complete" result? Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 16:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
there is a "job queue" which tracks updates to transcluded pages (mostly templates), then updates all the transclusions. as you can imagine with as many things that are being edited here, that can take a very long time to process. however, if you open a page that uses the template, make no changes, then save it, this will force the server to update the transclusion. someone could use a bot/script to do this for all the pages, but that induces more server load, so is generally frowned upon. however, there is no record of this activity in the edit history, since the edits make no changes, so it's not clear how frequently this is done. Frietjes (talk) 17:02, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK. It used to be that a manual purge of a page would force an update, but even that didn't show any immediate updates when I introduced this last night. Thought my code was bad at first. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 17:27, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
seems to be working now, with many transclusions? Frietjes (talk) 17:30, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template:New York State Legislatures

I saw that you have edited this template lately. I wonder why yoy removed the seal (although I don't care either way about it). The template looks now oversized to me, could you bring it back to the size it looked before Freebirds started editing it? Besides, the years are now grossly misleading. Possibly somebody established a doctrine that only the year of the beginning of the legislative term be mentioned, but has there been any discussion about it? Kraxler (talk) 17:24, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I partially reverted the changes, but tried to keep some of the less controversial parts. the reason for removing the seal has a long history, but basically there is a problem when you have a narrow browser window, and there are already many columns. in addition to the fact that the seal is decorative per MOS:ICON. I tried to compromise with the number of columns to achieve something that still fits on a standard 1024x768 screen, but doesn't have too many columns. there is some space at the end of the last column, but there will also be more years added in the future. hopefully this addresses your concerns. Seals for state House and Senate templates

Frietjes - What is the currently accepted policy on placing seals in House and Senate member list templates? You mention above in this response to Kraxler that the seals sometimes do not display correctly in narrower browser windows. Does this mean that the seals should be removed from all templates, including Template:Missouri House of Representatives, Template:Texas State Senate, and others that still include the seals, or are the images acceptable for use on some templates but not on others? Also, some states (such as Alabama, Missouri and Texas, among others) have seals corresponding to the state's House and Senate, while others (such as Hawaii and Alaska) simply use one seal to represent the legislative branch as a whole. If seals were acceptable on at least some of these templates, what would be the policy for adding the appropriate seal? Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 15:35, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

currently there is no consensus to add them, and there is no consensus to remove them. so, we are at status quo. the last discussion was mostly here. basically it was me and one other editor against the seals, one one editor for the seals. however, that doesn't mean there can't be a new discussion. my major concern is that they cause problems for narrow browsers and are largely decorative per MOS:ICON. however, if we can get more browser support for {{columns-list}} and {{div col}}, then we could, in theory, fix the largest part of the browser width problem. Frietjes (talk) 15:42, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
on a related note, I don't see the icon on the "Texas State Senate" template as much as a problem as it is on the "Missouri House of Representatives" template. the Missouri template overflows outside of my browser window, and has many more entries, leading to a considerable amount of whitespace. Frietjes (talk) 15:45, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Would the number of columns or the size of the seal itself have an effect on the spacing of the seals in the templates when viewed on a narrower window? Freebirds Howdy! 22:01, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
in a perfect world, the number of columns would adjust depending on the width of the browser window, which is what we have with {{columns-list}} and {{div col}}. however, until that is more widely supported in IE, it doesn't seem that there is support for deploying it in navigational boxes. but, it's possible that things have changed. of course, on a narrow browser window, it will be better to use fewer columns. however, if you think of the extreme case where you have one long single column, and an icon in the next column. there is going to be a massive amount of whitespace above and below the icon. that space would be better used for more content. since the icon is simply decorative, it is better, in my opinion, to simply remove it, and put it in the article if it is notable. if there is nothing notable about the icon, then it shouldn't be placed anywhere. Frietjes (talk) 22:39, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For the time being, I will remove seals from all of the templates, as I did here. This will give the templates a sense of consistency, and the issue of adding the seals once again can be discussed when there is more browser support. Cheers, Freebirds Howdy! 23:14, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
