Welcome!

Hello, Rotlink, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome!

One more thing: I see that you have added archive links to the citations in several pages. Archive links should not be added unless the linked page is gone and no other page will do. Bots often automatically add archive links when needed. I have undone your revisions; in the future, please use the link checker tool (example) to find dead links, and only add archive links for links that show up in red. Happy editing! —Remember the dot (talk) 02:14, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Questions about Archive.is

Hello! I noticed that you are the owner of Archive.is (from the talk page at Wikipedia talk:Link rot#Archive.is). I have a few questions:

  • Can you create a gadget for Wikipedia in order to show the archived link near each external link? (since you archived automatically all the external links last year). If yes, then can you archive the Wikipedia's external links automatically each month or so, from now on?
  • Can you create a Bookmarklet for archiving links with Archive.is, like WebCite's bookmarklet - Wikipedia:Using WebCite#Bookmarklet ?
  • Can you create a way like the WikiWix gadget for archiving an external link automatically, just by clicking the first time on it's Archive.is link? (I detailed how WikiWix gadget works at Wikipedia talk:Link rot#Better archiving of external links)

Such things would be extremely useful, in my view. Thank you. —  Ark25  (talk) 19:22, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Do you mean something like Template:Query_web_archive ? It is already there, but not very popular.
  • There is a bookmarklet: javascript:void(open('http://archive.is/?run=1&url='+encodeURIComponent(document.location))) (or drag the same link from the top of http://archive.is/ to your toolbar).
  • New external links are being archived constantly, approximately each 30-60 minutes (because there are a lot of wikis and they checked sequentially). So, it seems needless to wait for a click.
Rotlink (talk) 13:07, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answers. Sorry I haven't checked for your reply after 28 of July, so only now I have seen it. I have readed the Template:Query_web_archive and I don't really understand how to use "Your own style sheets". Probably that's the way to create a gadget. The user should be able to activate a gadget which will add after each external link a link to the archive.is archive. That would be awesome. Currently, at Romanian Wikipedia we are using the WikiWix Gadget (made by fr:Utilisateur:Pmartin) which is doing that, but the site (WikiWix) is not working well.
And another question: can you also archive automatically the external links which are in the talk pages? For example, at ro:Discuție:Traian Băsescu (talk page of the article about the Romanian president) there are a lot of links containing useful data, waiting to be inserted into the article). Until someone will add the data into the article, it would be very nice to make sure the information is not lost.
Thank you. —  Ark25  (talk) 10:01, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, saving links from the Talk: space can have sense. I will add it soon. Rotlink (talk) 04:11, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's the best news I got in a while! There are many many newspaper articles links gathered in such pages, like for example in ro:Discuție:Nicolae Ceaușescu/Bibliografie suplimentară - the former dictator of Romania, Nicolae Ceauşescu or ro:Discuție Categorie:Revoluția română din 1989 - about Romanian Revolution of 1989. Please, include the category talk pages too (the last example is in a category talk page). Thank you very much! —  Ark25  (talk) 09:24, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dating archive

Hi, many thanks for supplying the archive URLs for dead links. Would be good if you could use the appropriate date format for the archive date rather than always using ISO date. If you look at the references then you should be able to determine if day first or month first is more appropriate than ISO. If all dates are in same format adding a date out of sync with the rest is not good practice, many articles use a mixture so go with the most common. Keith D (talk) 18:26, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Rotlink (talk) 21:08, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Barnstar for you!

faktaomfartyg.nu -> faktaomfartyg.se

Hi Rotlink; I notice that you added archive links to several faktamofartyg.nu references, as the site is dead - this is indeed the case; however, faktaomfartyg.nu was simply replaced (again) by faktaomfartyg.se and the URLs stay otherwise the same - so e.g. what was formerly http://www.faktaomfartyg.nu/superfast_X_2002.htm is now http://www.faktaomfartyg.se/superfast_X_2002.htm . So I think it would be best to replace the links with the working ones to the current site, as the pages for individual ships obviously don't get updated in the archive. Thanks for your work and if you could do this, that would be great :-) Gestumblindi (talk) 16:17, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, OK. Just run the replacer for faktaomfartyg.nu -> faktaomfartyg.se. Rotlink (talk) 16:34, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Some (less than 10) links to th old site (faktaomfartyg.nu) are left because of missynchronization of my index and the real Wikipedia content, they will be replaced as well as soon as the index will be rebuilt (24-48 hours). Rotlink (talk) 17:50, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please respond

Quoted from Wikipedia_talk:Link rot#Archive.is:

It very much looks like Archive.is keeps only the newest shots when it archives external links automatically. It archives the external links once in a while, discarding the old archived versions. In the end, it's archiving dead links. And that is very bad. I detailed the process at Talk:Archive.is#How does automatic archiving work?. The owner of Archive.is probably doesn't realize that the program deletes old versions. — Ark25 (talk) 00:35, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

User:Rotlink I've tried to reach you on http://blog.archive.is/ask , by email, and now here. Can you respond? --Lexein (talk) 02:35, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Responded there. Thank you for pointing to the topic. I received only one email from you (with the question about re-archiving and typo fixes), responded to it asking for the examples, and that's all. Rotlink (talk) 03:20, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So how do i come off with the DNSChanger? --188.176.236.246 (talk) 18:19, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

BRFA withdrawn

Hi! An editor interpreted your BRFA as withdrawn after you removed it from the WP:BRFA page. Just wondering if this is what you intended to do? Thanks. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 19:53, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I need time to rewrite the description, it is too unclear. Rotlink (talk) 01:03, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another Barnstar for you!

Please accept this archiver's Barnstar for your huge help on keeping the Wikipedia references alive. Many thanks! —  Ark25  (talk) 02:23, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Automated editing

Hi! Per WP:BOTPOL you can be blocked for unapproved automated editing. You've already done so with a bot and now you are continuing (albeit low-speed) on your main account. Your task is very beneficial, but it is not a reason alone to circumvent our processes that are there for a reason. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 16:50, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. It is actually a single change (caused by chartstats.com decision to remove the content) which occurs on many (~1500) pages. There is even no bot heuristic to be supervised. I hit a chartstats.com dead link reading Wikipedia, fixed it on one page and tell the script to do the same change elsewhere. Rotlink (talk) 17:17, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is the definition of an unsupervised script (regardless of the actual function) that requires a separate account and should any disputes arise the method will be considered automated. 1500 is not a few pages, we have full bot approvals for half that. I'm just letting you know you are breaking policy, I won't take it anywhere further. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 17:46, 3 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The robot ignores www.monitorulexpres.ro newspaper

Hello again! I would like to ask you why the news on ro:Monitorul Expres are not archived? For example at the ro:Colorom article, this link: http://www.monitorulexpres.ro/?mod=monitorulexpres&a=citeste&p=economic&s_id=45199 (the second reference). It's there since 2010. Thanks. —  Ark25  (talk) 09:05, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It is archived: http://archive.is/Hk4jC Rotlink (talk) 10:02, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Right. The gadget had an unnecessary transformation of "&" into "%26". Thanks again! —  Ark25  (talk) 16:50, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This issue is being discussed at WP:ANI#Mass rollbacks required.—Kww(talk) 18:43, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Indefinite block, with no prior attempt to discuss, is not appropriate use of admin tools, nor appropriate admin behavior. Discussion is an appropriate action, as would be a short block, with unrestricted permission and invitation to discuss on an appropriate Talk page. We need to exhibit proper respect for someone who has shown considerable dedication to meeting and exceeding the archival abilities of both archive.org and webcitation.org mainly for Wikipedia's use. All that's missing from archive.is's CV is longevity. Let's not stab the wild gift horse in the heart, thanks. Let's instead bring in the horse whisperer. --Lexein (talk) 08:27, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • There were certainly previous discussions, firstly after their bot was blocked Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard/Archive 8#RotlinkBot approved.3F, User talk:RotlinkBot#Blocked then a BRFA Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/RotlinkBot that was withdrawn #BRFA withdrawn, then further note above about #Automated editing on main account where I warned that this can be a blockable offense after which they started using IP proxies. In the end, they were perfectly aware that they are violating our policies and chose to circumvent the process. I'm sorry to see a very beneficial task be put on halt because of this. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 13:34, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Gah. Thanks, though, for linking the discussions. (I wish somebody else had bothered to do so. Just more evidence that they're burned out and too resentful to do the community any favors.) I don't want rogue bots, but I also don't want perfectly valid edits they might perform to be reverted out of nothing more than petulant scorched-earth nerdrage. "See watr I dun? I burnt forest!" I hate nerdrage, especially when such a childish tantrum damages the encyclopedia worse than the alleged offense did. The attempted rationalization of that action behind WP:DENY is cowardly and pathetic, and anti-Five Pillars. It's time to re-assess these bullshit mass reverts. --Lexein (talk) 20:16, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
