Template:NC-hwy-cleanup NC 49 is an important state maintained highway that crosses much of the central part of the state. The road runs from Lake Wylie south of Charlotte, NC to Virgilina on the Virginia state line. The road is an important corridor for traffic as it is the quickest route between Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina and South Carolina and the North Carolina state capital at Raleigh, NC. The route does not go directly to Raleigh but travelers are able to pick up U.S. Route 64 at Asheboro, NC and head east into Raleigh easily from Hwy. 49. The highway leaves Charlotte and after crossing the more suburban portions of western Cabarrus County, heads north east into Stanly County. After passing Mount Pleasant, NC in eastern Cabarrus County, the road becomes a designated North Carolina Scenic Byway. The road passes close to Pfeiffer University in Stanly County before crossing the Yadkin River near the Tuckertown Reservoir. After crossing the river, the road skirts the northern foothills of the ancient Uwharrie Mountains and then drops down into Asheboro.

NC 49 Passes through these counties in NC:

  • MECKLENBURG
  • CABARRUS
  • STANLY
  • ROWAN
  • DAVIDSON
  • RANDOLPH
  • ALAMANCE
  • ORANGE
  • CASWELL
  • PERSON
  • GRANVILLE

Also interesting to note is the fact that NC 49 maintains its route number under different state maintenance from Laurens, SC to Crewe, VA.
