Occupation of Palestine refers to the current military control of areas of Palestine by Israel. For history of previous occupations od Palestine, see Occupations of Palestine.

Introduction
(to be written at the end)

Brief History of Palestine
The area of Palestine was inhabited by various groups (Philistines, Caananites, Jews, etc.) from pre-biblical times.
The number and composition of residents changed over time. Since about 1,300 years ago Jews became a minority (5% in 1880) and Arabs a majority in the area (95% in 1880).

In 1917, diaspora Jews convinced Balfour, an official of Great Britain which colonized Palestine at the time, to issue declaration of support for establishment of a Jewish home there. Palestinian residents were not asked for opinion and they opposed this idea.

The pogroms of Jews in late 1930s and 1940s, and especially the Nazi attempts of genocide, greatly increased support of the world for a safe-heaven for Jews.

After the World War II, the British empire began crumbling because of economical difficulties caused by the war and the emergence of the U.S. and Soviet Union as dominant world powers. Great Britain soon began the process of decolonization of its former possessions,
Facing increasing terror by Jewish groups in Palestine, Great Britain decided to leave its colony of Palestine and hand over the area to the care of United Nations.

In 1947, the U.N. General Assembly, without consulting the Palestinian population, voted to partition the area in roughly 2 halves. About one half (55%) was assigned to Jewish control, the other half (45%) to Palestinian control and Jerusalem was assigned to international control.

Palestinians and other Arabs opposed this plan because they felt it was grossly unfair to the indigenous population. In 1948, Jews proclaimed their assigned part to be the State of Israel and began ethnically cleansing the indigenous (mostly Arab) population. Since then, control of Palestine has been subject to several wars.

Presently, most areas of Palestine are under the military control of Israel.

The Partition and Consequences
On November 29, 1947, the U.N. General Assembly, without consultations with, and despite strong opposition of the majority of Palestine population, adopted a non-binding resolution U.N. Resolution 181: Partition of Palestine.
This resolution partitioned Palestine in three parts:
* About 55% of the territory was assigned to Jewish control,
* About 45% was assigned to Palestinian control, and
* The city of Jerusalem was assigned to international control.

Great Britain soon began the process of decolonization of its former possessions, Facing increasing terror by Jewish groups in Palestine, Great Britain decided to leave its colony of Palestine and hand over the area to the care of United Nations.

 • About 55% of the territory was assigned to Jewish control,
 • About 45% was assigned to Palestinian control, and
 • The city of Jerusalem was assigned to international control.
