“ذهول ورعدة” هي تجربة حياتية فريدة عاشتها الكاتبة بحلوها القليل ومرّها الذي يملأ الصفحات، تصوّر من خلال انحدارها إلى درك وضيع في إحدى الشركات الكبرى الوجهَ الآخر لليابان، حيث العمل قيمة مثلى، وحيث الشركة صنو للحياة، بل هي الحياة، تتكلّس أمامها العواطف، وتغدو العلاقات الإنسانية أشبه بلقاءات عابرة مخطوفة من زمن هارب.

Although Nothomb claims to have been born in Japan, she actually began living in Japan at the age of two until she was five years old. Subsequently, she lived in China, New York, Bangladesh, Burma, the United Kingdom (Coventry) and Laos.
She is from a distinguished Belgian political family; she is notably the grand-niece of Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb, a Belgian foreign minister (1980-1981). Her first novel, Hygiène de l'assassin, was published in 1992. Since then, she has published approximately one novel per year with a.o. Les Catilinaires (1995), Stupeur Et Tremblements (1999) and Métaphysique des tubes (2000).
She has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 1999 Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française; the Prix René-Fallet; and twice the Prix Alain-Fournier.
While in Japan, she attended a local school and learned Japanese. When she was five the family moved to China. "Quitter le Japon fut pour moi un arrachement" ("Leaving Japan was a wrenching separation for me") she writes in Fear and Trembling. Nothomb moved often, and did not live in Europe until she was 17, when she moved to Brussels. There, she reportedly felt as much a stranger as everywhere else. She studied philology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. After some family tensions, she returned to Japan to work in a big Japanese company in Tokyo. Her experience of this time is told in Fear and Trembling. She has written a romanticized biography (Robert des noms propres) for the French female singer RoBERT in 2002 and during the period 2000-2002 she wrote the lyrics for nine tracks of the same artist. Many ideas inserted in her books come from the conversations she had with an Italian man, from late eighties and during the nineties. She used the French Minitel, while he used the Italian Videotel system, connected with the French one. They never met personally.

You only had one job.
Young Amélie-san, recently returned to Japan, through great pains secures a one-year job contract as a translator at the prestigious Yumimoto Corporation. What follows is a mildly rocky start to a full speed spiral down the corporate ladder to the worst experience of her life.
An amazingly engaging and hilarious start, five star worth. Around the middle however, as events start turning for the worse, it became a bit difficult to read and highly exasperating sometimes. All the characters, like Ms. Fubuki Mori, and especially Mr. Omochi, were extremely unlikable. Mr. Tenshi was the only redeemable one, yet sadly his protagonism was too short lived. One is left to wonder how someone like President Haneda got to the top.
This was greatly enlightening about certain aspects of the Japanese work life, and especially about a western trying to accommodate to their customs. I think the inability to defend yourself, or others, is a free pass to a world of mistreatment. Some very excruciating moments, and a few ones way over the top. Some of it may be overly exaggerated of course, yet sadly I’ve watched certain movies, heard several things, and even read enough news to know the harsh reality described in this book is partly true, if not completely.
I find the Japanese culture fascinating, although the corporate side, if it resembles anything like this, is one aspect I truly wish I never EVER have to face. Still, good enough to spend the time, fun, and valuable. Could greatly appeal to someone interested in the subject.
*** Fear and Trembling (2003) is THE perfect adaptation. I mean except for a few aerial shots, a few childhood flashbacks and the music score, everything is 100% the book, without any deviations whatsoever. I don’t think there was a single dialog line not extracted directly from the book. Amazingly, Fubuki, Omochi, Tenshi and Haneda were exactly as I had pictured them. Not necessarily a great film, 7/10, but by far the most faithful adaptation I’ve ever seen methinks.

Sólo tenías un trabajo.
Joven Amélie-san, recientemente regresada a Japón, con grandes esfuerzos logra asegurarse un contrato de trabajo de un año como traductora en la prestigiosa Corporación Yumimoto. Lo que sigue es un levemente inestable comienzo hacia una rápida espiral en caída libre de la escalera corporativa hasta la peor pesadilla de su vida.
Un asombrosamente atrapante e hilarante comienzo, merecedora de cinco estrellas. Alcanzando la mitad sin embargo, cuando los eventos empiezan a empeorar, se vuelve un poco difícil de leer y altamente exasperante a veces. Todos los personajes, como la Sta. Fubuki Mori, y especialmente el Sr. Omochi, fueron extremadamente desagradables. El Sr. Tenshi era el único rescatable, pero tristemente su protagonismo fue breve. Uno queda preguntándose cómo alguien como el Presidente Haneda llegó hasta la cima.
Esto fue enormemente enriquecedor sobre ciertos aspectos de la vida laboral japonesa, y especialmente sobre un occidental tratando de acomodarse a sus costumbres. Encuentro la cultura japonesa fascinante, pero el lado corporativo, si se asemeja aunque sea un poquito a esto, es un aspecto que verdaderamente espero nunca JAMAS tener que enfrentar. Aun así, suficientemente bueno para pasar el rato, divertido, y valioso. Podría ser muy atrayente para alguien interesado en el tema.
*** Estupor y temblores (2003) es LA perfecta adaptación. O sea excepto por algunas tomas aéreas, un par de escenas de la niñez, y la música, todo es 100% el libro, sin ningún tipo de desviación en absoluto. Creo que no hubo ni una sola línea de dialogo que no fuera extraída directamente del libro. Asombrosamente, Fubuki, Omochi, Tenshi y Haneda fueron exactamente como los había imaginado. No necesariamente un gran film, 7/10, pero creo que por lejos la más fiel adaptación que he visto jamás.

Fear and Trembling by Amelie Nothomb
Something bothers me a lot about this novel.
It’s a short novel – 130 pages that can be read at a sitting. Translated from the French, it was a big hit in France and it won a couple of literary prizes when published in 1999. The main character is a young Belgian woman, of college age we assume, who lives in Japan and takes a job for a year in a Japanese corporation. (Just like the Belgian author who was born in Japan.)
She has a woman supervisor (very unusual in Japan) and she becomes infatuated with her. To make a short story even shorter --- she screws up everything so badly -- copying, filing, serving tea, simple accounting tasks, that she works her way all the way down to cleaning restrooms. She screws that up too.
In Japanese culture, she can’t be fired for a year, nor can she quit without disgrace before her contract is up, so there’s no immediate way out. She and her supervisor seem to agree that she’s “retarded.” Although we know she not really because she did an excellent job in writing a report with a lot of analysis that got her and several supervisors in trouble with the firm. So she wants us to know that she’s really a brilliant person when challenged with a task equal to her intelligence -- and that may be -- but we also suspect she may simply be a person without the discipline to apply herself to tasks she doesn’t like.
Along the way we get an absolutely devastating picture of Japanese corporate culture that chews people up and spits them out. Everything only flows one way --- top down. Supervisors scream at underlings and they just “take it.” You never explain or offer a word in your defense; you never speak up for someone else. There is one horrendous scene where the young woman’s female supervisor is dressed down by her male supervisor in front of everyone in the office and the scene it is portrayed as a “verbal rape” and the female literally collapses under the assault.
As another example of the clash of cultures, at one point the young woman worker asks “How else are we going to work things out if we don’t talk?” The response she receives is “If you DO talk, there’s serious chance you’ll make things worse.”
Women, in particular, are under tremendous constraints in Japanese culture. I’ll just touch on few things because there’s about eight pages elaborating on this. You are ashamed if you are not married by age 25, “your expiration date.” If you laugh you don’t look dignified; if you betray your feelings you look coarse, if you enjoy eating, you’re a pig. When you go to the bathroom, never let them hear you tinkle. Like I say, this goes on for several more pages. And she says the culture for a male is a little better but fundamentally the same.
The author gives us a summary of her thoughts about Japanese culture near the end of the story. First she tells us about the title: “Ancient Japanese culture stipulated that the Emperor be addressed with ‘fear and trembling.’ “Existence, in Japan, is an extension of The Company… My suffering was no worse than theirs; it was just more degrading. And yet I did not envy them. They were a miserable as I….They were giving up their lives for nothing, and they knew it.” And “ A Japanese person genuinely apologizing happens about once a century.”
And this: “Everyone knows that Japan has the highest suicide rate of any country in the world. What surprised me was that suicides were not more common.” Well this one is FAKE news --- Japan’s suicide rate is about 30th among countries; for example, Russia’s rate is about double that of Japan. So what bothers me is that this book seems like a trashing of Japanese culture. Can it really be that bad? Is our system (the West’s) that much better? The answer is obvious for the author, but I’m not so sure.

آميلي نوثومب من الأقلام النسائية التي أقدرها كثيرًا واقرأ أعمالها بشغف
ابدأ كل رواية لها وأنا على يقين أنها ستمنحني متعة لا حد لها بأفكارها غريبة الأطوار، والتي ربما لا يتطرق لها أحد من الكُتاب أبدًا ولا يمكن أن تخطر على باله قط
لا أعلم أيةً شياطين توحي لنوثومب بتلك الأفكار!
هنا تتحدث عن العبودية
ولكن عبودية من نوع آخر مختلف لا يكاد المرء يلاحظ أنه يقع تحت براثنها
حتى أنه يتقبلها راضيًا بلا نفور
ويتعامل مع كل ما يسؤوه منها بعقلية عملية بحتة دون النظر إلى كرامة أو كبرياء أو أي شيء من ذلك
عبودية العمل
عبودية المرؤوس لرئيسه
تلك التي تجعله يقبل منه شتى الإهانات وأفظعها دون أن يحرك ساكنًا
ومهما كان يبلغ من الكبرياء وعزة النفس، فإنه يقف أمام رئيسه في ذهول ورعدة
يرجو لو يعود به الزمن ليتدارك هذا الخطأ الذي وضعه في ذلك الموقف الشائن، ويقبل شتى العقوبات التي يصبها رئيسه على رأسه بخضوع وإذعان
ولم تجد نوثومب مجتمع يقدس العمل قداسة أقرب للعبادة كمجتمع اليابان
أو ربما هي صدفة أن جذور الكاتبة الأولى إنما تعود لليابان!
فهل رأيتم فكرة رواية أغرب من هذه؟
لكنها نوثومب، التي مزجت فكرة ما غريبة، بذلك الصراع الفكري القائم بين الغرب واليابان
والتقاليد التي تقيد الفتاة اليابانية، والعمل الذي يكبل الشاب الياباني ويجعله يدور دائمًا في دائرة مغلقة تبدأ بالعمل وتنتهي عنده
وتعزي زيادة ظاهرة الانتحار في اليابان إلى هذه الأسباب
كل ذلك ممزوج في تماهي غريب مع سيرتها الذاتية
لا تعلم أهي سيرتها الخاصة حقًا أم هو مزج الخيال بما هو كائن وما هو موجود؟
رواية غريبة ككل روايتها
ممتعة، التهمتها في جلسة واحدة
نصفها الأول مضحك وساخر، ستقرؤها وأنت تقهقه من تلك التصرفات الشياطنية أحيانًا والغبية أحيانًا التي تصدر عن بطلة الرواية
ولن تستطيع منع نفسك من الشعور بالحزن في نصفها الثاني الممزوجة أحداثه بخضوع أقرب إلى الذل
صغيرة وممتعة

Fear and Trembling is a satirical novel by Amélie Nothomb, first published in 1999, and translated into English by Adriana Hunter in 2001.
Amélie is a European, who spent her childhood in Japan, gets a job in a large Japanese company. However, it is not completed by the tasks assigned to it. Her behavior, which is unorthodox by Japanese standards, leads, after a game of intrigue by her superiors, to Amélie's "demotion" to the toilet woman. However, other company employees show solidarity with her, and she learns to use humor to break through the malevolences directed against her. ...
Fear and Trembling (French Academy Award winner), in a modern-day narrative, is the story of a European in the Japanese bureaucracy who, with Kafkaesque satire, spreads laughter and anxiety throughout the story.

ودة كان شعار بطلة الرواية في هذا الكتاب الممل!
ذهول ورعدة ..كتاب عبارة عن تجربة الكاتبة البلجيكية إيميلي نوثومب خلال العمل لمدة سنة في إحدي الشركات اليابانية الكبري..
إيميلي بدأت عملها في الشركة كمحاسبة و نتيجة للتعنت من قبل مرؤسيها كونها أجنبية وما ترتب علي ذلك من إهانتها ومعاملتها معاملة سيئة وصلت لدرجة الإحتقار ،لم تترقي في العمل كالمعتاد ولكن انتهي بها المطاف كمشرفة علي دورات المياه!
الكتاب بيلقي الضوء علي الوجه الأخر لليابان وكمية الضغط النفسي والعصبي الذي يتعرض له اليابانيون في عملهم ويمكن يكون دة من الأسباب التي أدت إن اليابان تملك أكبر نسبة انتحار في العالم كما أشارت الكاتبة في الكتاب..
إسلوب السرد كان ممل جداً علي الرغم إنها رواية قصيرة،الكتاب غير مقسم إلي فصول ..كله حتة واحدة كدة..كما إن معظم الناس بيقولوا إن الكتاب دمه خفيف وساخر و أنا أصلاً لم أبتسم ولو مرة حتي !
الكتاب فيه جزء صغير مكتوب حلو وهو الجزء اللي بتتكلم فيه الكاتبة عن وضع المرأة في اليابان لكن غير كدة مفيش حاجة تانية عجبتني أو لفتت انتباهي ...

My Japanese friend Yukie said I had to read this if I wanted to understand how a Japanese job worked. And indeed I do feel I have a great deal more insight into it!
Rule number 1: NEVER take initiative for anything you're not supposed to take initiative for. The heroine finds this out the hard way. She's just started working for this Japanese company. She speaks fluent Japanese, French and English, so of course, like any Westerner, she's looking for an opportunity to impress her new bosses. A colleague goes off on vacation, there's a piece of work that's been left hanging which requires knowledge of French, and she sees her chance.
Oh dear. Not only does she get no praise; she, and the misguided person who helped her, are suddenly in huge trouble. But she still doesn't understand how things work, and makes one mistake after another, being moved further down the ladder each time. In the end, her job consists of changing the toilet paper in the men's room.
The book is supposed to be based on the author's experiences when working in Japan, and is quite funny. I started reading it on a transatlantic flight, and had finished before I arrived. Strongly recommended if you're interested in Japan and the Japanese.

I must say, I was really surprised by this book. I work for a Japanese company here in Vancouver and I have noticed that my Japanese co-workers have to adhere to different standards and rules from the rest of us (we don’t question it, what can you do?). It’s been interesting working there because half of my co-workers are Japanese, the other half aren’t. We’ve had to adapt to each other’s cultures and I think we do so quite well. It does feel like we’re split into two camps and I have often been approached by a Japanese co-worker to say something to the boss, something I can get away with saying as I’m not Japanese.
So because of my experiences working with the Japanese, and talking to them about corporate culture in Japan, I shouldn’t have been too shocked by the content of this book but I was. Yumimoto Corporation sounds like hell to me and I felt sorry, for the most part, for Amelie, the Belgian girl who works there and quickly gets on the bad side of her female co-worker, who is villainous but feels the need to be as she is a woman working in a male-dominated world.
I’m still not completely convinced by Amelie though. She was born in Japan, lived there until she was 5 years old, yet when she moves back to Japan, she seems to have accepted the Japanese corporate life way too easily. As a westerner, Amelie is used to taking the initiative. That doesn’t fly in Japan, apparently. She becomes a total pushover. It doesn’t sound plausible that a western woman would do that without a fight.
This book was meant to be satirical. Not that I found too much of it funny, it was more sad than anything. And I was surprised by the comments Nothomb made about Japanese society, how there’s only two ways out for women; marriage or suicide. I found that a bit harsh. It was weird because on one hand she loves Japanese culture, on the other hand she is so scathing of it.
I realize I’ve gone off topic and I’m not talking so much about the book now. Well, I did like the book. It was a quick read and Nothomb does have a graceful writing style. However, a few things didn’t sit right with me.

لقد هُدم كل ما بناه هاروكي في خيالي نحو اليابان 🤦🏻♀️
عندما يقع عبء العلاقات اليابانية البلجيكية على كاهل فتاة بسيطة، ولا اقصد ببسيطة بأنها محدودة القدرات، على العكس، يُزهر الورد حيث يوجد في تربة صالحة، وايملي-صن زُرعت في أرض بور، في شركة نزعت ثقتها بنفسها وتفننت في اذلالها وتدميرها.
الحزن و الاشمئزاز كانا مصاحبين لي طوال فترة القراءة،
السخط على تدرج السلم الوظيفي في شركة يوميموطو، عندما يتحول رئيس الشركة إلى "الرب"! ونائب الرئيس إلى الشيطان، ورئيستك المباشرة إلى "جلادتي"، الجميع يمارس سلطته بدون رحمة على موظفي قسمه.
الكل مشارك في تدمير ايملي-صن، الكل جبان وضعيف الشخصية في هذه الشركة، الكل سلب منه إرادته الحرة ولا يحق له الدفاع عن نفسه تحت أي ظرف، الكل معرض للإهانة والتحقير، عندما تمضي العقد مع الشركة فعليك أن تترك كرامتك على البوابة :)
لا تعقدي الأمل على ما هو جميل. لا تأملى المتعة ؛ لأن متعتك تدمرك، لا تأملی الحب، لأن ذلك لا يستحق جهدك، فالذين سيحبونك سيحبون السراب الذي من حولك وليس ما أنت عليه. لا تأملى أن تجيئك الحياة بأي شيء، لأن كل عام يمر يأخذ منك بعض الشيء. لا تأملى أي شيء حتى ما كان بسيطاً كالاطمئنان، فليس لك أي مبرر کی تكوني مطمئنة.
علقي أملك على العمل. حظوظك ضعيفة في الارتقاء نظرا لجنسك، فلتعلقي أملك إذا على خدمة شركتك. سوف يكسبك العمل مالا لن تفرحي به كثيرا، ولكن قد يصلح عند الزواج مثلا - لن تكوني من الغباء کی تتوقعي رجلا ما يريدك لذاتك.
عدا ذلك، يمكن أن تأملى العيش حتى سن الشيخوخة، رغم أن ذلك لا قيمة له على الإطلاق، وعدم ارتكاب ما يخل بالشرف الذي يعتبر غاية في حد ذاته. هنا تنتهي قائمة آمالك المشروعة.
أحياناً كل ما نحتاجه هو العيش في بيئة سوية، تقدر مجهودنا وتترك لنا حرية الإبداع لكي ننطلق بثقة وعزيمة ونعمل بكل نشاط وحب .. وهذا بالظبط ما كانت تحتاج إليه بطلة الرواية، ولا أعرف ما نسبه الحقيقة التى عرضتها لنا اقتباسا من سيرتها الشخصية، حين أفكر في أن هذه الرواية واقع حقيقي أصاب بالذهول والرعدة حقاً..

Не понравилась повесть. Это выливание, выплескивание обид человека, вступившего на бесплодный путь внутриофисной борьбы с начальством, которая заведомо обречена на провал. Здесь не имеет роли японская ли это культура или какая-либо еще. Офисные взаи��оотношения могут быть разными – от дружбы и командного сотрудничества, совместных пьянок, корпоративов, полного равнодушия по схеме дом-работа-дом, и до различных видов конфронтаций внутри коллектива по горизонтали или по вертикали. Амели вымещает свои обиды, описывая, как с ней обошлись, и как она, будучи европейкой, поступила, как японка. Это ее выбор, и было бы лучше, если бы она справилась со своими обидами сама, не выплескивая их на весь мир. Ей еще повезло, что в офисе были люди подобрее, чем ее шефиня, и, вообще, ее сразу не уволили. На практике, на пришедшего в чужой монастырь со своим уставом все ополчаются, и тогда не сдобровать.

I had mixed expectations when approaching Belgium's enfant terrible, Amélie Nothomb having heard plenty of praise and criticism in equal measure. So it was with fear and trembling I approached Nothomb's Prix du roman de l'Académie française winning novel Fear and Trembling, aware of the author's reputation as a quirky, hip and contemporary writer. Little did I know that the novel, itself highly autobiographical, charting the struggles of a Belgian worker, Amélie, within the various rigidities of Japanese corporate culture, would be caustic in its entirety.
Nothomb embarrasses herself with her critique of a culture which she evidently plucks from stereotypes, never once examining the possible grains of truth within these superficial constructions of Japanese identity, but inflating them for crass, comedic effect. Supposedly a book highlighting the difficult intricacies of Japanese corporate culture, Fear and Trembling instead criticises the difficulty for somebody foreign, in this case Amélie, to function within a world of explicit hierarchy and tradition. Alas, Nothomb's novel is an attack on difference; the fish-out-of-water story is so thinly disguised as to milk the largest amount of sympathy for the 'Westerner' who must survive - but never become at one with - a culture that is described as evil, torturous and unthinking. Not only is the Yumimoto corporation hellish but the people within it Nothomb paints as the antithesis of the poor and victimised main character. Amélie's character never escapes the one-dimensional boundary of her girlish nature, both silly and supercilious; the divide between West and East, which many GR reviews pick up on, only paint Amélie as good, whilst the Japanese workers as unfair tyrants. Under constant attack, Amélie defends her privileged position with lines such as, 'Believe it or not, honor does exist in the West too'. Alas, the novel is riddled with such hyperbole and stilted dialogue. The back and forth arguments which make up the majority of the novel are crude in their rough satire, revealing Nothomb as nothing more than a juvenile [and somewhat self-obsessed] writer. This grating chatty style, written without much thought, is both absurd and borders on outright discomfort at certain points when Nothomb, who obviously has little appreciation for political correctness, touches upon some troubling descriptions: there is the running joke that Amélie is suffering from 'developmental disorders'; whilst the berating of co-worker, Fubiki, by her boss Mister Omochi is described as a rape; and later Fubiki, angry, walks towards Amélie 'with Hiroshima in her right eye and Nagasaki in her left.' There comes a point where Nothomb's writing becomes inflammatory minus rationality; the humour in the novel - perhaps its only redeeming point - comes from lazy depictions of the Japanese workers. In essence, Fear and Trembling is a slapstick novel, quirky yes, but just as tawdry, guns blazing and without purpose.
For such a short novel Nothomb surprisingly manages to include plenty of stereotypes: Mister Omochi is referenced as the 'Obese one' who is always 'dementedly screaming', whilst Mr Saito is another demonic boss of Amélie's, forcing her to print again and again a heavy golf manual. Some critics have called the novel erotic, but fail to mention that the only power of sexuality given is towards Amélie. Only she, as the foreigner, is able to form friendships, connections and relationship; the other only female in the novel, Fubiki is robbed of her sexuality, individuality and is exoticised. Fubiko is the ideal fantasy of a Japanese woman. As Amélie [or can we as readers take this to be Nothomb's voice?] describes:
'Not all Japenese women are beautiful. But when one of them sets out to be beautiful, anyone else had better stand back. All forms of beauty are poignant, Japanese beauty particularly so. That lily-white complexion, those mellow eyes, the inimitable shape of the nose...
Thus Fubiko is the very poster-girl for Orientalism, as an exotic but always dangerous figure, as someone who functions robotically in the novel. Her only hope at sexuality is either through suicide or marriage: Amélie's assertion that these are the only two avenues for Japanese women are nothing more than racist and belittling, and stand alongside her proclamation that she has a 'profound admiration for any Japanese woman who has not committed suicide', whilst later 'Everyone knows that Japan has the highest suicide rate of any country. This long segment where Amélie talks about the 'Fate of the Japanese Woman' is supposed to be a critique of the various dogmas that entrap the gender roles within Japanese society, however because the description is nothing more than an incoherent rant - written in second-person towards an imaginary audience - Nothomb dissociates away from the connection any deeper meaning and political value. Her outburst means nothing because it has nothing to do with the characters. Such an oblique mention to feminism is lazy feminism at best - and yet hypocritically, in denouncing the institution which would force Fubuki to marry, Amélie then mocks Fubuki's attempts at flirting. To put the icing on the cake, ironically, the only man in the novel which could save Fubuki from her drone existence is a white man (!) Such painful contradictions litter the novel, turning it into a mess of cultural clashes and caricatures; Nothomb's style though easy to read, and stylistically very new-age, is equally disorientating at points where her descriptions become random and are composed of awkward imagery and irksome stylistic phrases, such as 'mashed-potato syndrome paralyzing my hand'. However such repulsion may be the point: Nothomb wants to be shocking. And the novel is shocking, but for all the wrong reasons, and it is for all the wrong reasons that Fear and Trembling continues to keep receiving ludicrously high ratings and positive reviews.
Nothomb embarrasses herself with her critique of a culture which she evidently plucks from stereotypes, never once examining the possible grains of truth within these superficial constructions of Japanese identity, but inflating them for crass, comedic effect. Supposedly a book highlighting the difficult intricacies of Japanese corporate culture, Fear and Trembling instead criticises the difficulty for somebody foreign, in this case Amélie, to function within a world of explicit hierarchy and tradition. Alas, Nothomb's novel is an attack on difference; the fish-out-of-water story is so thinly disguised as to milk the largest amount of sympathy for the 'Westerner' who must survive - but never become at one with - a culture that is described as evil, torturous and unthinking. Not only is the Yumimoto corporation hellish but the people within it Nothomb paints as the antithesis of the poor and victimised main character. Amélie's character never escapes the one-dimensional boundary of her girlish nature, both silly and supercilious; the divide between West and East, which many GR reviews pick up on, only paint Amélie as good, whilst the Japanese workers as unfair tyrants. Under constant attack, Amélie defends her privileged position with lines such as, 'Believe it or not, honor does exist in the West too'. Alas, the novel is riddled with such hyperbole and stilted dialogue. The back and forth arguments which make up the majority of the novel are crude in their rough satire, revealing Nothomb as nothing more than a juvenile [and somewhat self-obsessed] writer. This grating chatty style, written without much thought, is both absurd and borders on outright discomfort at certain points when Nothomb, who obviously has little appreciation for political correctness, touches upon some troubling descriptions: there is the running joke that Amélie is suffering from 'developmental disorders'; whilst the berating of co-worker, Fubiki, by her boss Mister Omochi is described as a rape; and later Fubiki, angry, walks towards Amélie 'with Hiroshima in her right eye and Nagasaki in her left.' There comes a point where Nothomb's writing becomes inflammatory minus rationality; the humour in the novel - perhaps its only redeeming point - comes from lazy depictions of the Japanese workers. In essence, Fear and Trembling is a slapstick novel, quirky yes, but just as tawdry, guns blazing and without purpose.
For such a short novel Nothomb surprisingly manages to include plenty of stereotypes: Mister Omochi is referenced as the 'Obese one' who is always 'dementedly screaming', whilst Mr Saito is another demonic boss of Amélie's, forcing her to print again and again a heavy golf manual. Some critics have called the novel erotic, but fail to mention that the only power of sexuality given is towards Amélie. Only she, as the foreigner, is able to form friendships, connections and relationship; the other only female in the novel, Fubiki is robbed of her sexuality, individuality and is exoticised. Fubiko is the ideal fantasy of a Japanese woman. As Amélie [or can we as readers take this to be Nothomb's voice?] describes:
'Not all Japenese women are beautiful. But when one of them sets out to be beautiful, anyone else had better stand back. All forms of beauty are poignant, Japanese beauty particularly so. That lily-white complexion, those mellow eyes, the inimitable shape of the nose...
Thus Fubiko is the very poster-girl for Orientalism, as an exotic but always dangerous figure, as someone who functions robotically in the novel. Her only hope at sexuality is either through suicide or marriage: Amélie's assertion that these are the only two avenues for Japanese women are nothing more than racist and belittling, and stand alongside her proclamation that she has a 'profound admiration for any Japanese woman who has not committed suicide', whilst later 'Everyone knows that Japan has the highest suicide rate of any country. تحدث أميلي بجمال وبراءة الأطفال عن تخيلها لنفسها منذ الصغر وتطلعها لشغل منصب الألوهية ثم تنازلها درجة بدرجة لتدني قدراتها وتحطم آمالها في الوصول لهذا المنصب العالي حتي وصولها للعمل بتنظيف دورات المياة

Japan sure brings out the bonkers in everybody, doesn’t it.
(Bonkers : a demotic English term meaning crazy but with the element of horror removed and an extra squirt of I will never understand this in a million years – get me out of this room!)
I tried, you may know this already, to get on board with The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. That was a little too eyerollingly cute-weird for me. I had a go with the other Murakami guy (Ryu, not Haruki) and he was really strange.
Then there was Natsuo Kirino. The novel was called Grotesque and it really was.
And I must mention a little movie called Love Exposure by Sion Sono. Synopsis : A bizarre love triangle forms between a young Catholic upskirt photographer, a misandric girl and a manipulative cultist. Truly madly deeply bonkers….!! One of my all time favourites. You gotta see Love Exposure! But not with your parents!!
So now this tiny novel-memoir which is Japan from a Western point of view. 22 year old Belgian girl gets job with huge Tokyo corporation – and a year of humiliation begins. It’s a little hymn of hatred towards Japan and frankly borderline racist as Amelie Nothomb makes generalization upon generalization about all Japanese people and they’re all profoundly derogatory. Japanese people should sue this book right now. It’s so insulting.
Now I think Amelie is gonna say well can’t you tell I really deep down LOVE Japan and its people.
But the experience of reading this is like watching someone wrestling rather too strenuously with their pet dog – who’s a naughty ittle doggy then? Are You a naughty ittle doggy? Are YOU the NAUGHTIEST NASTIEST MOST ANNOYING ITTLE DOGGY? Yes, you are!! YES YOU ARE. You get the strong impression there’s some genuine aggression in there.
I’ll just dish up a quote for you, in case you may think I may be misrepresenting Amelie. Here she is contemplating Japanese company men :
Everyone knows that Japan has the highest suicide rate of any country in the world. What surprised me was that suicides were not more common.

The obligatory beer with colleagues undergoing the same kind of gradual lobotomy, hours spent stuffed into an overcrowded subway, a dozing wife, exhausted children, sleep that sucked them down into it like the vortex of a flushing toilet, the occasional day off they never took full advantage of. Nothing that deserved to be called a life.
Oh and howsabout this:
A Japanese person genuinely apologizing happens about once every century.
Ouch!
So anyway, it’s a bitter, too-near-the-knuckle-to-be-really-funny memoir (why do they bother to call these things novels?) and I’m most curious to find out What Amelie Did Next.

Inicio el año con una escritora nueva para mí, Amélie Nothomb.
Pequeña novela autobiográfica en la que nos cuenta el funcionamiento de una empresa japonesa desde el punto de vista de una persona occidental.
La diferencia cultural entre oriente y occidente es de sobra conocida, pero dentro de la empresa, en el mundo laboral no tanto, y esta pequeña novela es una buena forma de acercarnos a este abismo que nos separa.
Es cierto que esta ambientada en los años 90 y puede que ahora haya cambiado, pero no hace tantos años el ambiente laboral japonés era, encorsetado, cerrado, normatizado, jerarquizado y muy muy machista.
Los usos y costumbres a los que estuvo sometido la escritora horrorizan, especialmente en el último destino que tuvo dentro de la empresa, pero lo cuenta de una manera tan sencilla, divertida e irónica que hasta la peor de las humillaciones te resulta graciosa.
Me hubiera gustado que la novela hubiera sido más larga, que se adentrara más en los entresijos de la empresa, en su día a día con más detalle, pero el contrato se le acabó y el final de sus días en la empresa japonesa es de traca.
Muy recomendable.

Quizás es cierto que Amélie Nothomb no es una autora para todo los públicos, pero que tiene ese algo particular y especial nadie puede negarlo. ¡Y cómo me alegra ser de esas personas que disfruta tanto de lo estrambótica que es! Octava novela que leo de ella y séptima que no me deja indiferente.
En este caso nos encontramos con la Amélie de veintitantos años. Desde que era una niña, no había vuelto al que consideraba su hogar, Japón. Ahora, ya una mujer, y con toda la resaca que le provocaban sus años de infancia, consigue encontrar un empleo en una de las grandes empresas niponas. Pronto descubrirá que no todo era tan bonito como recordaba y que además de muchas cosas buenas, la cultura japonesa, también tiene muchos incovenientes para los occidentales.
A través del año que pasó trabajando en esta empresa, Amélie nos hace un rápido paso por la dura y jerarquizada estructura empresarial en Japón. El empleado es práctimente un siervo del superior, no tiene derecho a queja, ni siquiera a defenderse ante una injusticia. Cualquier queja es considerada de mala educación y una perdida inmediata del honor.
Si para colmo eres mujer, tus posibilidades de ascender o de tener un buen puesto, son prácticamente nulas. Y si eres una de esas pocas mujeres que lo ha conseguido, la lucha por mantener el puesto hace incluso más dura la situación. Además, todas estas mujeres que consiguen ascender, deben renunciar a la vida familiar, consiguiendo ser también juzgadas por no tener una familia aún, siendo ya "mayores" para ello. La mujer sigue siendo reducida a un marido y unos hijos. Disfruto mucho también de esas relaciones amorosas y tóxicas, que la autora suele mostrar entre mujeres, normalmente ella misma y alguna otra de la que se enamoró.
Muy interesante el retrato que hace Amélie del papel de la mujer en Japón y como luchan contrar esa constante idea de "no perder el honor". En la literatura asiática actual tenemos varios ejemplos de autoras que hablan del mismo tema: Sayaka Murata, Cho Nam-Joo o Mitsuyo kakuta. Amélie ya lo estaba mostrando a finales de los noventa. Esta señora tiene mi cariño para siempre.

"Fear and Trembling" embraces the strange with one wicked arsenal of irrational (but noble) thoughts & actions by the superb heroine. Her authentic recklessness captivates, no enamours, the reader. I had very strong feelings for this incredible novel because I lived EXACTLY the type of professional downward spiral that all but defeats you. إنه ذهول حقيقي أن تقرأ لإيميلي نوثومب هذه الكاتبة البارعة جداً في السرد ، الحوارات اللاذعة، الأسلوب الحاد في رسم الشخصيات، هذه الرواية والتي تجري أحداثها في اليابان وبالتحديد في أحدى الشركات اليابانية، تبرز الوجه الآخر لهذا البلد الذي يبدو للكثيرين وكأنه جنة على الأرض أو أرضاً مثالية ..
تأخذنا نوثومب الى تلك الشركة، تعرفنا على الأناس المتواجدون هناك، الموظفون المرعوبون ، المُدراء الصارمون، رتابة العمل والفناء من أجل الواجب، الحياة هناك اشبه بالحياة في ثكنة عسكرية وكما قالتها نوثومب ( اليابان هي الشركة ) لا غير ، هي حياة تقتصر على ذلك المكان، العمل هو الحياة ، الباقي هو هامش وإستراحة قصيرة ثم يعود الإنسان إلى حضن العمل، حياة مكثفة هناك، ساعات عمل طويلة، مُدراء أشبه بالضباط العسكرين، لا مجال للخطأ، لا مجال للتعب والشفقة على أحد، ترويها نوثومب بطريقة ساخرة حيث تعمل كموظفة جديدة في تلك الشركة وكيف انها تتلقى الأوامر الصارمة من مدراءها في العمل بكل صبر وبلا مبالاة وكيف يُمتهن الصبر والكرامة الإنسانية هناك، يتوجب عليها أن تصبح آلة تعمل دون شكوى طوال الوقت..

Japanischer Stromberg packt das Samuraischwert aus - oder How not to run human ressource management for Dummies
Diese kleine Geschichte hinter den Kulissen des Büroalltags der japanischen Firma Yuminoto von Amélie Notohomb ist gar köstlich, wenn sie nicht so menschenverachtend grausam wäre. Also wie in der Einleitung knackig geschildert: Man nehme die Bürosatire Stromberg, verdopple, beziehungsweise verdreifache die Grausamkeiten und menschlichen Abgründe - respektive was man den lieben Kollegen, speziell hierarchisch Untergebenen antun kann - füge noch die japanische Demut von Mitarbeitern, die Angst vor dem Gesichtsverlust und patriachalische gesellschaftliche Verhaltenskodizies, speziell für Frauen hinzu und fertig ist diese Groteske, bei der mir oft das Lachen und Schmunzeln im Halse steckengeblieben ist.
Die Abläufe und Bestrafungssysteme für nicht konformes Verhalten und unerwünschte Mitarbeiter-Eigeninitiative sind sehr kafkaesk in diesem hierarchischen, bürokratischen Unternehmen mit menschenverachtenden, oft komplett sinnentleerten Managementmethoden. Aus betriebswirtschaftlicher Sicht ist diese Unternehmenskultur sogar so unbetriebswirtschaftlich und leistungsfeindlich, dass man sich wundert, wie in so einem Umfeld irgendwann überhaupt Innovation (sei es auch nur eine Prozessinnovation oder Marketingidee) stattfinden kann.
Insofern witzig ist das ganze auch auf jeden Fall, da die belgische Protagonistin als ausländische Mitarbeiterin erstens diese Demütigungen nur ein Jahr bis zum Arbeitsvertragsablauf erdulden muss und sie zweitens die ganze Sache insofern sportlich und mit Humor nimmt, dass sie das ganze als Übung zur Assimilation in die japanische Kultur sieht. Man stelle sich vor, als japanische Frau aber auch als Mann kann man diesem System ein Leben lang nicht entkommen, da erklären sich die vielen Selbstmorde wie von selbst, was in dieser Geschichte auch thematisiert wird. So kommt zu dieser Story, die sehr starke autobiografische Züge trägt, eine gehörige Portion japanische Gesellschaftskritik hinzu.
Also, weil es die selbstverständlichste Sache von der Welt war, den Infinitiv eines Verbs als Vornamen zu wählen, hatte Herr Saito seinen Sohn Tsutomeru, "arbeiten" genannt. Den Gedanken, dass man die Identität des Knäbleins mit solch einem Programm ausstaffiert hatte, fand ich erheiternd. Ich stelle mir vor, wie die Mutter in wenigen Jahren den Jungen ermahnen würde, "Arbeiten, geh arbeiten!" Und wenn er nun arbeitslos werden würde?
Zögere daher nicht zwischen Selbsttötung und Schwitzen! Das eigene Blut zu vergießen, verdient Bewunderung, Schweiß zu vergießen Verachtung. Wenn Du Dir den Tod gibst, schwitzt Du nie wieder und deine Beklemmung hat für alle Ewigkeiten ein Ende
Fazit: Sehr böse, insofern sehr witzig und sehr klug gemacht, wenn man ein bisschen die Unternehmenskultur in multinationalen japanischen Konzernen kennt oder kennenlernen will. Ach ja einen halben Punkt Abzug gibt es eigentlich nur für die Kürze dieses Romans. Ich wollte auf jeden Fall mehr.

Луда книга, която описва приключенията на една европейка, дръзнала да опита да нахлуе в
ултраконсервативния свят на японска корпорация в края на XX век.
Истински театър на абсурда и точно когато си мислиш, че си почнал да вдяваш аджеба какво се случва, следва нов пирует или обрат в историята.
Това е единствената книга на Нотомб, която ми е харесала към момента, може би заради това, че е автобиографична и не е имало нужда да пуска извратеното си въображение да препуска на воля. :)
На доста моменти съм се смял като безумен, надявам се да успея да намеря подобно забавление в някое от другите ѝ произведения!

فکر میکنم ژاپنیها ازین کتاب متنفر باشن! ولی من دوسش داشتم! :)) اگه واقعا چنین رفتارها و تبعیضهایی در سیستم اداری ژاپنی وجود داره که بهنظرم میتونه شبیه ایران باشه! راوی در زمینه خاصی استعداد داره و کار خوبشو نشون داده ولی چون یک زن خارجی هست، ندیده گرفته میشه و حتی بهخاطر حسادتهای زنانهی رئیسش به کار توالت شویی گذاشته میشه! ولی اونقدر مقاوم هست که این کارو تا جایی که میتونه ادامه میده. یه جاهایی به شخصیتش حسودی کردم! اینقدر بیخیال و پوست کلفت بودن هم نعمته!

"لنلخّص. عندما كنت صغيرة، كنت أريد أن أصبح الرب. فهمت أنه مطلب كبير فأضفت قليلًا من الماء المقدس إلى نبيذ قدّاسي: سأكون عيسى المسيح. وسرعان ما أدركت غلوّ مطمحي فرضيت بأن أعمل شهيدة عندما أكبر.
ولما كبرت قررت أن أقلل من جنون عظمتي فأعمل مترجمة بإحدى الشركات اليبانية، إلا إنه، للأسف، كان عملًا يفوق رغبتي فكان عليّ أن أتنازل عنه درجة لأصبح محاسبة. ولكن سقوطي الاجتماعي الصاعق لم يكن له فرامل. نُقلت -إذًا- إلى مهمة من لا شيء. ولسوء حظي -والمفروض أن أتنبه لذلك- كان اللا شيء فوق طاقتي. عندئذ نُقلت إلى مهمتي الأخيرة: م��ظفة مراحيض."
في تدرجها التنازلي من الإلوهية إلى المراحيض تحكي لنا آميلي نوثومب عن سنة من حياتها عاشتها في أحد الشركات اليابانية، تتناول المآساة بحس فكاهي ساحر، في بعض المواقف لم أتوقف عن القهقة إلا بعد فترة، خصوصًا عندما تعرت في المكتب ليلًا وتقمصت دور المسيح.
تصف لنا آميلي حال الشعب الياباني وبعض تقاليدهم البالية بخصوص النساء، حالة الاستعباد الذي يعيشها هذا الشعب، زمن المضحك حقًا أننا نراهم محظوظين.
لا داعي للكلام كثيرًا. لنلخّص. أنا أحببت آميلي نوثومب جدًا في تجربتي الأولى معها، وأعتقد أنها ستصبح من كتّابي المفضلين.

My Japanese friend, 30-ish, former competitive cross-country skier*, now a sushi-man working in Poland, moved all the way from the other side of the world to Warsaw, just to make sushi for local yuppies. Can you imagine? In order to escape Tokio's corporate nightmare, he swapped continents, traded cultures, left his family behind and moved to this obscure little country called Poland. I mean I like it here, but it's not the most foreigner friendly place. Especially not if you are a slender Japanese dude with long silky hair and a cute pudgely face.
Just to give you an example, this friend of mine gets giggled at by teenage girls just because of his androgynous fashion choices and petite builds, I'm guessing he confuses the shit out of them, but come on, grow the hell up girls. Then he gets mean stares from clerks because his Polish doesn't live up to their snooty standards. Oh and he gets hit on while in clubs by hoards of horny women who want to satisfy the itch for something exotic. Just to be even, he gets hit on in clubs by horny men too**, again I think it's all about the curiosity and the exotics. All that is minor annoyances, the most worrisome is that my friend gets looked down by his coworkers. Even though he's the most involved of all the business partners, had invested the most $$ and is the only one among the bunch with the intricate knowledge of sushi making, he is treated as someone less worthy. Nothing better than racist colleagues, is there? People sometimes suck.
And if you put all that crap he's dealing with on top of the regular ex-pat maladies (homesickness, scarcity of home food, cultural misunderstandings, etc), it can really get nasty. So it made me wonder***, for him to put up with this crap every single day, how bad the typical Japanese workplace can be? How awful Tokyo's corporate overlords? To my understanding my friend was just a regular guy, living normal life - no Yakuza, no kink.
Amélie Nothomb gives some answers to that, she did the opposite of my Japanese friend has done. She left her native Belgium to live and work in one of Tokyo's major corporations. From her book you get a taste of what work in such an environment is like, what's expected from a newbie and why some might find daunting. The book's funny (I got quite a few laughs), lyrical at times (much appreciated melancholic descriptions from time to time, and well crafted description at that) and a little... fake.
Nothomb lies her ass of. That's her writing style. Most of it is exaggeration and fact twisting, I'm sure it's done for comical relief and to prove a point, but still, to me that to a degree undermines the credibility of her story. In short, if you can live with shameless exaggeration, you'll enjoy the book. Otherwise - prepare yourself for a whole lot of teeth grinding.

ايميلي صن بطلة الرواية او صديقتنا الكاتبة بنفسها بما انها سيرة ذاتية على حسب وصفها
تعمل في شركة كبيرة في الامبراطورية اليابانية العظيمة التي لم تصبح عظيمة بعد ذلك في نظري
لتواجه العبودية بأقوى صورها .. لنجد اليابانيين ورؤيتهم لأنفسهم فقط على هذا الكوكب البائس وما غير ياباني هو دون مستوى الملاحظة حتى
أربع رؤساء متدرجين من مدير الشركة الي مديرتها المباشرة الحيزبونة موري
تواجه عنجهية البعض وتعمد البعض استعبادها ومداراة البعض ايضا تعاطفهم ليظلوا يابانيين في نظر المجتمع
فتاة بلجيكية تعرف اليابانية جيدا ليتم ابعادها عن كل ما هو ياباني بكل الطرق حتى لا تشوه تلك الحضارة العظيمة بغربيتها الهمجية هذه
“من السمة اللازمة للناس الذين يمارسون مهنة حقيرة هي ابتداعهم ما يسميه نيتشه عالمًا ما ورائيًا.
جنة أرضية أو سماوية يجهدون في الإيمان بها لكي يسلوا أنفسهم عن وضعهم العفن.
وبقدر ما يكون عملهم وضيعًا يكون فردوسهم الذهني أجمل.”
تنحدر في عملها لمستوى ادنى من العامل لتتحول موري من صديقة او حلم ان تكون صديقة لعدوتها اللدود
“-لا أحد يمكن أن يكون على هذا القدر من الغباء كي يرتكب أخطاءً مثل هذه.
-بلى، أنا!”
شخصية ايميلي مجنونة بكل المقاييس فردود افعالها وتصرفاتها سواء في حضور احد او في غياب الجميع كانت محض جنون داخلي شديد
أول تجربة مع ايميلي نوثومب وبالطبع لن تكون الأخيره فقد احببت جنون قلمها بشده

كما إعتدنا من إميلي نوتومب ...فهي قادرة على عجن سيرتها الروائية المتجزءة وقولبتها في إطار روائي سردي ممتع وذا مدلولات إستنتاجية رائعة...تلك الصورة المعبرة عن حال إمرأة أجنبية كان جل همها العمل في اليابان في أحد مؤسساتها الضخمة وإصطدامها بالفكر السطوي اللاإنساني في هذه المنظمات جعل لهذه السيرة نمط مختلف دعمه سرد قصصي رائع ...تلك الحالة من اللامبالة التي إستطاعت من خلالها الكاتبة إجتياز آلامها يجعل فكرة الذهول والرعدة وهي الحالة التي تقوم العادات اليابانية بتبنيها في اليابان عند امتثال الجنود أمام قوادهم وهذا الخضوع المذل سوف يجعل للمتلقي الرغبة في الخوض معها لآخر صفحاتها....رائعة
