Daniel Jonathan[1] Stevens (Croydon, 10 ottobre 1982[2][3]) è un attore inglese, noto soprattutto per il ruolo di Matthew Crawley nella serie televisiva Downton Abbey.
Biografia
Dan Stevens è stato adottato alla nascita da due insegnanti[4], e ha un fratello minore, anch'egli adottato[5]. Cresce vicino alle Brecon Beacons in Galles, ma si trasferisce nel Kent in giovane età dopo aver ottenuto una borsa di studio alla prestigiosa Tonbridge School[4]. Trascorre un'adolescenza ribelle, protestando contro l'establishment e venendo spesso sospeso da scuola[4], ma inizia anche a prendere parte alle produzioni teatrali scolastiche, ottenendo il ruolo del protagonista in Macbeth[6].
Successivamente, nonostante riesca a entrare nella compagnia del National Youth Theatre, decide di studiare letteratura inglese all'Emmanuel College, dove si unisce ai Footlights[4].
Oltre al lavoro come attore, Stevens è redattore della rivista letteraria The Junket dal 2011 e contributore regolare del quotidiano The Daily Telegraph, nella rubrica "My Week"[7].
Carriera
Mentre frequenta l'università, Stevens si esibisce spesso all'Amused Moose del quartiere londinese di Soho e, durante l'ultimo anno, inizia a recitare con la compagnia di Peter Hall[4]. All'età di 23 anni, partecipa alla miniserie The Line of Beauty. Nel 2008, dopo aver recitato nella miniserie televisiva Ragione e sentimento, entra nei cast di The Tennis Court, Dickens Confidential, Orley Farm e The Lady of the Camellias, miniserie radiofoniche trasmesse su BBC Radio 4 tra il 2008 e il 2009[1].
Nel 2010, ottiene il ruolo di Matthew Crawley nella serie televisiva britannica Downton Abbey, che lo porta al successo internazionale, ed entra nel cast del film horror Vamps nel ruolo di Joey Van Helsing[8]. A fine novembre 2011, conduce una puntata del programma Have I Got News For You[9], mentre a dicembre viene resa nota la sua partecipazione all'adattamento cinematografico di Summer in February, romanzo del suo ex-professore Jonathan Smith[10][6]. Nel 2012, è uno dei giudici del Booker Prize[11].
Stevens è inoltre narratore di numerosi audiolibri in lingua inglese, tra i quali The Angel's Game, Wolf Hall e War Horse[12]. Nel 2012 narra The Making Of Planet Heart, trasmesso su BBC America il 22 aprile[13], entra a far parte del cast del film di Nick Broomfield The Catastrophist[14] ed esce dal cast di Downton Abbey a causa di impegni teatrali oltreoceano: l'ultimo episodio che lo vede protagonista è il Christmas Special della terza stagione, durante il quale Matthew muore in un incidente stradale[15]. Stevens, inoltre, interpreta un amico di Daniel Domscheit-Berg nel film su Julian Assange e WikiLeaks Il quinto potere[16], oltre a recitare nel film indipendente The Guest[17] e nella terza pellicola della serie Una notte al museo, nei panni di Lancillotto[18].
Vita privata
Dan Stevens è sposato con l'insegnante di musica, ex-cantante jazz, Susie Hariet, di origine sudafricana, incontrata nel 2006 a Sheffield, durante la rappresentazione di The Romans in Britain[2]. La coppia si è sposata nel Sussex nel 2009, con Hariet già incinta di sei mesi[19]: la prima figlia, Willow, è nata a dicembre dello stesso anno[5]. Il 15 aprile 2012 Stevens e Hariet hanno annunciato di aspettare un altro bambino[19], un maschio, nato ad agosto[20], che la coppia ha chiamato Aubrey[21].
