GLAM news in January

January began with the en:Public Domain Day campaign, celebrated on January 1st. As part of the international activities, we organized a small series of publications about the main authors whose works entered in public domain during 2017. The posts and press releases were disseminated through the social networks of the Wiki Educação Brasil and highlighted the articles on Wikipedia about these authors and Images of his most significant works present in the Wikimedia Commons.

On the first half of the month, the group dedicated itself to listing its main interests, building activity planning, resuming contacts and aligning efforts. In this sense, we work in a more internal way, in order to organize the initiatives to be developed throughout the year 2017.

During the second half of January, we resumed our activities to prospect partners and held a meeting with the Emílio Ribas Public Health Museum. The conversation focused to present the various possibilities of insertion in the Wikimedia projects and to have in mind the local institutional demands. Based on the interest presented by the team, we outlined a pilot project and defined an activities schedule that will provide editing training, articles creations about the museum and its related themes, such as the History of Public Health in Brazil, and the Wikimedia Commons images uploads. The dialogue initiated with the Energy and Sanitation Foundation in 2016 has also been resumed. We defined the articles that will be created and improved by the museum team and we begin to define the other aspects of the partnership to be developed during the next months.

Throughout the month, the group also articulated, in partnership with the International Committee of ICOM for the Development of Collections - COMCOL and the Museum Management of the Municipal Secretary of Culture of Rio de Janeiro, the 1st Edit-a-thon Rio Of Museums, aiming to bring more museums from Rio de Janeiro to join us, cooperating in GLAM initiatives providing high quality content regarding the Brazilian history and culture to the Wikimedia projects, specially Wikipedia and Commons. During the next month we will implement the Rio of Museums pilot project with the participation of at least 6 local museums and at least 10 museologists are expected.

Editing women profiles with 7 librarians during #1Lib1Ref

Understanding the gender gap on Wikipedia and more importantly, knowing how to bridge it, these were the goals of a workshop held on 17 January at Wikimedia Côte d’Ivoire headquarters in Abidjan. For the Ivorian librarians gathered at this workshop, the interest of the #1Lib1Ref campaign was twofold: understanding deeper the concept of Wikipedia and, more importantly, knowing how to edit its contents related to Ivorian women.

For almost a year now Wikimedia Côte d’Ivoire has been emphasizing on women-related topics. Through Wiki Loves Women, a project run in Côte d’Ivoire as well as in Ghana and Nigeria, over 500 women profiles have been created, improved, and translated on Wikipedia.

Featuring the local experience at WikiIndaba 2017

From January 22 to 25, seasoned Wikipedians across Africa gathered in Accra. The event referred to as WikiIndaba, invited a delegation from Côte d’Ivoire.

We shared the GLAM experience in Côte d’Ivoire through presentations and one-on-one discussions. One of the most valuable benefits of WikiIndaba 2017 was probably the lesson learned from other GLAM experiences throughout Africa.

Public domain artworks from an exhibition about Tartu

In January 2017 Tartu Art Museum decided to donate public domain artworks from their currently open exhibition "Changing Tartu in four views" to Wikimedia Commons. The collaboration was initiated jointly with a crowdsourcing geotagging and rephotography platform Ajapaik.ee. On Ajapaik, there is an album with almost all the images from the exhibition, while half of pictures namely those in public domain were donated to Commons.

Also new templates were created on Commons for linking to Estonian central museums' database Muis.ee and Ajapaik.

Biographic data of Estonian photographers to Wikidata

Editors from Estonian Photographic Heritage Society have compiled a biographical database of photographers who have worked in Estonia or are of Estonian origin up to 1944. Since November the migration of this biographic data to Wikidata has taken place (see corresponding Wikidata query).


January: less action - more planning

In January Wikipedia celebrates its birthday. This is the starting point for the international campaign "#1lib1ref", where librarians donate time adding lacking reference to Wikipedia. Germany participated for the first time. The outreach is mainly based on a twitter-campaign. That is why we use the hashtag and abbreviations, as only 140 characters per tweet are admitted: #1lib1ref reads on librarian adds 1 reference. There is a translated website for guidance the librarians could turn to and even a tool was developed helping to quickly identify Wikipedia articles that lack reference. As evaluation becomes more and more relevant check here for specific outcomes. Even if in the first round no records for added reference were achieved among German librarians, still we had good results in motivating librarians to follow us on twitter (among 60 - 85 new followers), which helps us to enhance the idea of Free Knowledge among these strong proponents. During the campaign we had one real-life-workshop in Hamburg and a webinar in partnership with the German library association. For next year I would recommend more real-life-workshops to further participation.

keep GLAM and care on

In order to give an overview what WMDE is planning to do 2017 in the GLAM field with volunteers and institutions we published a short presentation on Wikimedia Commons. Besides further GLAM on Tour Stations and more Coding da Vinci hackathon events, we will mainly focus on being present at conferences and hearings to lobby Free Knowledge in the cultural heritage sector.

Europeana reaches out

Many of us working in Europe know the European platform for GLAM content: Europeana. Two years ago a council of 50 members was created to broaden the perspectives and to give advice both to the platform itself but also to its members mainly GLAM institutions. Last fall I was elected to become a member of that council. It is not only the first time a Wikimedian entered the circle but until than no other mayor proponent for the user perspective was represented in the council. Thanks to Wittylama Europeana is already cooperating with Wikimedia like in the actual challenge on Worldwar I. But we all know it needs many torches to light the cave. Thus I hope that in the coming two years I will have the opportunity to rise the torch for reuse and free license in Europeana. Some of my ideas I expressed in this blogpost.The first council meeting will be held 21st of February. I will keep You informed.

Uffizi Gallery held a two day event organized by Wikimedia Italia. On January 20th the library of the gallery hosted a workshop for museum professionals about the Wikimedia projects. On January 21th an editathon was held at the prestigious Cabinet Room of Drawings and Prints.

Andrea Zanni (Aubrey) held a course on Wikisource dedicated to librarians. This has been the first course in Italy completely dedicated to Wikisource, and was held on 3 dates: January 11, 18, 25. The course was about 18 hours in total, and it covered pretty much everything you should know for editing Wikisource: navigation, Index pages, Proofread extensions, template for formatting and how to upload books in Internet Archive and Wikisource. There were 20 librarians from all Florence, affiliated with different libraries and institutions. Every one of them has now an account on Wikimedia and started uploading digitizations on Internet Archive and Commons. Given the success of the course, another one is being programmed for Tuscan librarians outside Florence.

On January 14th Lorenzo Losa, president of Wikimedia Italia, had a talk on Wiki Loves Monuments and enhancement of cultural heritage during the national conference of youth clubs of Italian UNESCO, in the wonderful setting of San Giovanni Maggiore Cathedral in Naples.

Winners of DARM Challenge 2 and Karpoš Municipality meeting

DARM Challenge 2

The challenge run one month: from 00:01 (CET UTC+01:00) December 25, 2016 until 23:59 (CET UTC+01:00) January 25, 2017. Wikipedian in Residence at DARM (National Archive of the Republic of Macedonia) was active during the year 2016. In the collaboration with the State Archive we have 2,190 files uploaded. The aim of this challenge was to use these files in articles in any language. The winners (first five contributors with most points) are:

The five winners will get prizes: set of books, 20 euros each, with total amount of 100 Euros.

Statistic results (some according to GLAMorgan tool):

  • 16 participants
  • from 8 different language wikis
  • more than 50 new articles created at the time of DARM Challenge 2
  • 35.55% of all images of category
  • 1,392 pages on 33 wikis use those files.

We noticed that there were editors who used the files in their home wiki articles, but they didn't sign themselves as participants. This is something we count as a success.

On 27 January 2017, 7 students who participated in the last year edit-a-thon with the theme: Karpoš Municipality, were guests on meeting with officials from the Karpoš Municipality, altogether with the President of UG GLAM Macedonia and coordinator for education program at GLAM Macedonia. The officials said many thanks to our members who improved the article about the Municipality. The meeting was productive, because the officials agreed to help more about sources and texts, so in the future edit-a-thons we will be able to create, edit and improve other articles connected to Karpoš Municipality (about schools in this Municipality, about settlements, etc.)

Wikipedian-in-Residence in Gelderland

Newly appointed WiR Michelle van Lanschot started her first residency at the Flipje en Streekmuseum Tiel on 1 January. During this project, she will visit 7 smaller GLAMs in Gelderland province, and teach them how to interact with the Wikimedia movement. As part of these projects, she will be compiling a manual that will eventually give other smaller GLAMs the means and knowhow of how to interact with Wikimedia themselves. This project held a kick-off meeting on Thursday 19 January. Representatives from all participating institutions met with the new Wikimedian in Residence Michelle van Lanschot, who started on January 1st. Arne Wossink presented a short item on the Wikimedia-universe, Michelle van Lanschot presented the project and what she expects to do during this year. KB supporting #1Lib1Ref

The KB, national library of the Netherlands, supported the One librarian, 1 Reference (#1Lib1Ref) action. The goal of this worldwide campaign is to motivate every librarian to add (at least) one reliable reference to Wikipedia. The KB supported this campaign for the Netherlands by:

  • writing a Dutch language 1Lib1Ref manual & call-to-action (pdf, doc) for librarians (1st week of January). This was also translatd into English.
  • sharing these documents via Biebtobieb, the knowledge and innovation platform of Dutch public libraries. The libraries were asked to spread the message across their respective networks (first week of January).
  • sharing the manual and call-to-action to the 400+ employees of the KB (2nd week of January) and
  • via the communication and social media channels of the KB and Delpher: Twitter KB, Twitter Delpher, Facebook KB, Linkedin KB

The KB donated images and wrote a Dutch Wikipedia article about the first Dutch movable picture book for children from 1856.

Template Infobox Manuscript

A infobox template for manuscripts was still missing on Dutch Wikipedia. Hence the KB created the Template:Infobox manuscript. This will make sure the manuscripts from (among others) the KB can be better described on Dutch Wikipedia. It will also improve the uptake of structured data about manuscript on DBPedia and Wikidata.

Impact assessment for image donation Nederlandsche Vogelen

In May 2015 the KB, the national library of the Netherlands, donated 250 historic images of birds of the Netherlands to Wikimedia Commons. The images were taken from (the five parts of) the book Nederlandsche vogelen (English: Dutch birds) from the collection of the KB. In the months after the image upload the editors of Dutch Wikipedia embedded the birds images in articles in many languages. This has increased the visibility of this heritage collection by over 100 times, also outside the Netherlands. This is proven by this impact assessment for the year 2016 (page in Dutch)


Immigration of images and #faktajakt

The National Archives of Norway have uploaded 5300 images to Wikimedia Commons for public use. The images are from different parts of the collections mostly from the image archives collected by different governmental agencies, such as the Lighthouse board, Department of Corrections and the Ports department. In addition there are also images from private archives, Billedbladet NÅ (a pictorial magasine).

The images are not just confined to Norway, there is also some interesting international images, for example a small collection by Bodil Biørn, who lived in the border area between Turkey and Armenia before and after the Armenian genocide.

For the National Archives Wikimedia Commons is a interesting way to reach a broader audience and enthusiastic Wikimedia volunteers are a good source of metadata that our own curators would never have the time to find. For example where a Wikimedia user have gone through a large part of the collection identifying the correct aircraft types. And a collection of early colour photographs from Norway and Germany in 1937 where a German user have painstakingly placed the images in correct geographical categories, some of them even down to the correct street corner.

The images was uploaded from the National Archives' Fotostation database by Riksbot, robot programmed in Python inhouse by National Archives staff. The upload has also highlighted a need for the National Archives to standardise the metadata in their own database and further uploads will happen after that job has been finished.

#faktajakt - the Norwegian edition of #1lib1ref

Wikimedia Norge partcipated in #1lib1ref with our own Norwegian edition, namely #faktajakt. With the help of the translated citation hunt-tool in Norwegian Bokmål and Norwegian Nynorsk our intern, Sabine Rønsen from The Oslo and Akershus Univeristy College of Applied Sciences did a great job with outreach to libraries. We kicked #faktajakt off with an article on Wikipedia, sources and #faktajakt in the national journal for librarians, Bibliotekaren. After the article was published we were contacted by a county library to hold a workshop on #faktajakt in March. In total 90 citations were added to Wikipedia. Rønsen is now writing a new article to sum up the results and her experience as a new editor at Wikipedia.


Open Heritage: our first wikivisit

On the 13th and 20th of January we carried out for the first time an activity that we could name wikivisit. It was organized by the Free Software Office of the University of Granada and the heritage section of this university and consisted of, as first step, a guided visit to one of the buildings of the university, the old royal hospital, during which we were able to take photos.

It was builded by the Catholic Monarchs after the conquest of Granada and the works and remodelings continued during the centuries XVI-XVIII. It has several elements of important value, such as Renaissance courtyards, and it is declared as monument. Today hosts the headquarters of the university and its library.

So after the visit we went to the Center of Virtual Teachings of the University of Granada and we edited about the building. In total 19 people participated, editing five articles, four were new. The experience was very positive and there are other similar proposals to carry out in the coming months.


Connected Open Heritage; GLAM and Open data; #1lib1ref

January has been a month of planning and taking care of other thing for Connected Open Heritage, and a lot of work has been to move things to phabricator. Some work to finish off the upload of images from an excavation in Mexico in 1932, and an open question about what meta data is needed for the remaining images to go up. Also planning for events to attend, countries to visit and WLM-data to move to Wikidata.

A short film on why GLAMs should work with Open data and the benefits of releasing material with free licenses that was recorded during the summer finally has subtitles in English. Feel free to add subtitles to other languages and to use it in your work if you find it useful.

#1lib1ref

During #1lib1ref 13 libraries hosted events to improve Wikipedia by adding citations to articles. According to social search around 50 edits were made, but there is a lot of edits where editors forgot to add the #1lib1ref hashtag also. Some of the libraries that participated has started planning for more activities, such as hosting Art+Feminism edit-a-thons or regular meetups.

The first two data donations have been received by Martin Poulter, the Wikimedian In Residence at the University of Oxford. The first is a batch of Electronic Enlightenment identifiers for 1,600 people who already have Wikipedia articles. The other is a batch of more than 8,000 records relating to doctoral theses at the University of Oxford, about half of which are available open access. The Bodleian Libraries are recruiting a Wikidata Assistant to clean up this data for import.

Seven of the university's IT trainers attended training in Wikipedia editing and how to run a Wikipedia training event. Martin is seeking to run a repeat of this workshop with another batch of staff. Two drop-in events for library staff during #1Lib1Ref attracted six staff members, and another who did not attend but announced her edit on Twitter.

Oxford University has four hospitals and Martin gave a presentation to communications and training staff from a variety of medical staff about the important work done on Wikipedia to promote public health. This has led to an invitation to give a talk for staff in the Department of Psychiatry.

The University has a new GLAM strategy to cover its four museums, its libraries and its botanic garden. I've met with the newly appointed GLAM Programme Manager to promote a role for Wikimedia platforms in implementing the strategy. The Oxford Museums blog hosted a guest post about sharing GLAM collections on Wikidata.

In an ongoing process, Fæ has uploaded well over a quarter of a million images, all well-described, of small archaeological objects, made available under open licence by the Portable Antiquities Scheme in England.

BBC news topics

A small but significant data donation secured from the BBC by Andy Mabbett was a set of "BBC Thing" identifiers for news topics (for example, this one for Iran). Added to Wikidata using P1617 (BBC Things ID), they plug the relevant items more tightly into the web of semantic, linked, open data (here's the same ID's BBC linked data for Iran).

Libraries Help Break Record for Ukrainian Wikipedia Birthday

From January, 28 until January 30, Wikimarathon was running in Ukrainian Wikipedia, dedicated to its 13th anniversary. The aim was to attract as many people as possible to enrich free encyclopedia and to have a record number of new articles as for three days. To make it easier for all interested and existing editors to take part in the motion and collaborate face to face, Wikimedia Ukraine inspirited and supported meetups for these days. More than 30 settlements were on the Wikimarathon`s meetups map and nearly 20 of them were hosted by public or university libraries. Volunteers have collaborated with the libraries to host wikimeetups, where everyone could come and take part in Wikimarathon and check books for information. The events brought together a diverse group of Wikipedians, students, schoolchildren, libraries patrons, and librarians to add and improve Wikipedia content.

Wikimarathon resulted in 2031 articles (428 were created by bots). So the average daily number was 4 times bigger than average number of articles created in Ukrainian Wikipedia along the year. 558 users reacted to Wikimedia Ukraine`s appeal by contributing new article, among them 165 registered during Wikimarathon days. Some piece of that statistics was reached due to wikimeetups.

Plants and People

Plants and People was a weeklong event, January 22nd - 28th, to promote access to information about plants and people who study them. Edit-a-thons were hosted at LuEsther T. Mertz Library of the New York Botanical Garden, Mt. Cuba Center, and the University of New Mexico Centennial Science and Engineering Library. These events focused on adding content related to female scientists and native plants. Nearly 50 participants had the opportunity to learn more about Wikipedia, their local library collections, and other sources for plant information like the Biodiversity Heritage Library and JSTOR. Coinciding with #1Lib1Ref, members of the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries were also encouraged to add citations to Wikipedia. Organizers are looking forward hosting similar events in the future.

Over 700 new videos uploaded

The following represents a selection of the files that have been uploaded this month from open-access sources. Most of these (over 700) came from PubMed Central through the Open Access Media Importer — whose uploads have crossed the 32,000 mark during the first hours of February. If you can think of wiki pages where these files (or other files from the same source articles) could be useful, please put them in there or let us know. Several of them have already been reused this way, along with many others that had been uploaded earlier.

Ramping up structured Commons, #1lib1ref success, and other updates

At the Wikimedia Foundation, the big focus has been on the Structured Data on Commons Grant, and getting that started, and supporting the #1lib1ref campaign.

In January, we announced the receipt of the Structured Data on Commons grant from the Sloan Foundation. The Grant, which allows for $3 million over the course of three years, helps us support both the software devlopment side of commons and the development of

However, in addition to the software, we are beginning to develop the team of folks. This will include several positions that would be a good fit for folks familiar with GLAM-Wiki, Commons, Wikidata or all three:

  • Program Manager -- whose main responsibilities will include coordinating efforts among various participants and stakeholders in the project and reporting to Sloan about our progress. More information can be found on Greenhouse.
  • Another GLAM-Wiki strategist focus on structured data. (See the job posting on Greenhouse).
  • Community Liaison -- who will be interfacing with the Commons and Wikidata communities on the project.

Keep an eye out for these position descriptions as they become available from WMF, and if you know folks working in the GLAM sector who would be a good fit, let us know.

Before the team comes onboard, I am beginning to schedule opportunities for talking with various communities, that have a deep understanding of Outreach Parnter and stakeholder need for Structured Data on Commons, including:

  • The International Coordinating Team for Wiki-Loves Monuments (already talked with)
  • European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators (see meeting agenda)
  • DPLA -- this relationship includes talking with their staff soon and providing a 2 hour workshop/talk on Wikidata + GLAM at their annual meeting
  • Smithsonian -- supporting some initial Collaboration alongside Wikimedia D.C. around how we could enable more data sharing through Commons
  • Europeana -- through Liam, I plan to do outreach with Europeana to better understand how we can be more intertangled with and compatible with their needs.

1lib1ref: Smashing Success!

We ran year two of #1ib1ref this year, with the help with volunteers in over 18 languages! The outcomes were over 3x last years recorded edits using the hashtags tool: 4,171 edits from 741 contributors to 2,588 pages. See the outcomes from last year by comparison!

We are in the process of doing some deeper and more complex analysis of the campaign and its outcome. We have some preliminary lessons from the campaign:

  • Three weeks gave most participants enough time and communications to run small workshops if they didn't have them planned before the beginning of the campaign. We saw a steady flow of workshops discussed on Twitter throughout the campaign, with a burst of them towards the end.
  • Coverage in Library publications was not as striking this year, as in previous years. But we got some great support from close allies of the movement, including individual GLAMs that have worked with Affiliates, OCLC, IFLA, Biodiversity Heritage Library, and a number of regional library networks.
  • The invitation to more community affiliates to lead their own sub-campaigns, in their own languages and geographies, worked moderately well this year. The number of impacted language communities doubled, but we still didn't reach critical mass in a number of languages for growing the campaigns there. We will need to work on guidance and support for community leaders to build better network impact.

We will do a more thorough report about the other outcomes in the campaign, including some highlights from blogposts and other resources created during the campaign.

We plan to host the campaign again in 2018, and if you are interested in supporting it in your language or context, make sure to join the Wikipedia + Libraries Facebook group: we plan to use that as a coordinating hub for social campaigns around librarians.

  • Development of next steps with IFLA and ICOM -- we are trying to develop a better understanding of the next projects for cooperation -- its beginning to look like it might be in the space of Wikidata
  • Development of the Met press release and project communications
  • Triaging several requests from North American GLAMs to the [email protected] OTRS queue
  • Several other requests related to WMF Grants
  • Support of the Movement Strategy Process
  • Supporting the hiring process for the Lead Programs Manager
  • Developing European Coordinators Meeting program
  • Beginning preparations for Wikimedia Conference
