Last week, the UK Government published a powerful report by Lord Darzi, revealing that the NHS is in critical need of reform. Among the many findings, the report highlighted the worrying state of cancer care, including: • Only 65.8% of cancer patients are being treated on time in the UK • Just 60% of genomic tests (vital for cancer diagnoses) are delivered on schedule • Only 5% of eligible brain cancer patients have access to whole genome sequencing, which is vital for treatment selection During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we welcome the emphasis that the report placed on improving care services for children. On average, over 420 children in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year, accounting for more than a quarter of all childhood cancers in Great Britain. About us
The Brain Tumour Research charity exists to raise the awareness of and grow the funding for scientific research into brain tumours and improve outcomes for brain tumour patients. We are the only national charity in the UK dedicated to funding continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours. We are a leading voice in this country calling for greater support and action for research into brain tumours. The Brain Tumour Research charity supports one of the UK’s largest collaborative group of laboratory-based scientists progressing world-class research into brain tumours, working tirelessly to glean new layers of understanding about this disease. Key statistics on brain tumours: • Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer • They kill more children than leukaemia • They kill more men under 45 than prostate cancer • They kill more women under 35 than breast cancer • Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease • In the UK 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour • Less than 20% of those diagnosed with a brain tumour survive beyond five years compared with an average of 50% across all cancers • Incidences of, and deaths from, brain tumours are increasing. Together we will find a cure. Text CURE to 70660 to donate £5.

We are extremely grateful to The Hospital Saturday Fund for their ongoing support and contribution to help fund the fight against brain tumours. Their latest grant of £2,000 has been used to cover the cost of two weeks of next-generation sequencing (NGS) at one our Centres of Excellence. NGS is cutting-edge technology that allows researchers to determine the sequence of DNA and RNA. Our centre at Queen Mary University of London used NGS to identify differences between healthy neural stem cells and cancerous glioma stem cells from the same patient, thus providing information about the drivers of cancer and that are likely to play a role in glioblastoma growth and potentially revealing targetable vulnerabilities.

Our policy team recently met with Jenni Minto, Minister for Public Health and Women's Health, at Holyrood alongside the Scottish Government’s Cancer Policy team and Professor Steve Pollard from The University of Edinburgh. The packed agenda ranged from why brain tumours must be treated as a priority by Scottish Government, to how they should explore an academic partnership model to ensure long-term, sustainable funding for brain tumour research. Ms Minto will open the inaugural meeting of the Cross Party Group on Brain Tumours on 8th October. Yesterday in Portcullis House, the inaugural meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Brain Tumours (APPGBT) for this Parliament was held and the group can now be registered. Supported by MPs Sarah Owen, Mims Davies, and Lord Polak, along with over 20 Parliamentarians, this dedicated team is committed to improving options and outcomes for brain tumour patients. “We just want to make it as easy and frictionless and enjoyable for them to raise money as possible.” 🙌 With thinking like that, it's no wonder Brain Tumour Research smashed it out the park when it came to their 10,000 Steps a Day in February Challenge. By using GivePanel's JustGiving integration, the team have not only grown their fundraising but also made it easier for supporters to choose how they want to fundraise. And spoiler, they raised a lot! 🎉 Read the full success story and get in touch to find out how your nonprofit can make the most of our JustGiving integration ✅ https://buff.ly/4gf953l

The first treatment for a rare condition which causes brain tumours has been announced. The drug belzutifan is now available on the NHS as treatment for Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, a rare condition which causes cysts and tumours in different parts of the body, including the brain. The NICE - National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has recommended belzutifan for some adults with VHL disease who need treatment for VHL-associated central nervous system, kidney or pancreatic tumours. This breakthrough could transform lives by reducing the need for repeated surgeries and protecting vital organ function. Our incredible Brain Tumour Research supporter Nick Hampshire is now on day five, of his epic seven-day challenge running from Liverpool to London! He is running the equivalent of NINE marathons! This is no easy feat for Nick, as not only is it physically challenging, but also mentally and emotionally as he's doing this to help Brain Tumour Research get closer to finding a cure for the devastating and cruel disease that took his father far too young 💛 A comment of encouragement would be very welcomed and if you fancy donating your coffee money that would be very much appreciated too: https://bit.ly/4fRKFfX #UltraMarathons #Running #Charity #braintumourresearch
