The third of four children, Leo Carew grew up in the centre of London, in the shadow of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Inspired by audiobooks, he developed a late interest in reading and began trying his hand at writing soon afterwards.

Carew read Biological Anthropology at Jesus College, Cambridge, after which he pursued a long-standing love of cold and wild places to the High Arctic archipelago of Svalbard - Old Norse for 'The Cold Edge.' Here, he lived in a tent for a year, training and working as an Arctic guide, and subsequently an explorer. This was also when he revisited a novel he had begun at the age of 12, which was rewritten as The Wolf, the first book in his Under the Northern Sky trilogy.

On the Origin of Another Species

Some while ago I wrote a blog explaining some of the influences behind the construction of the Anakim – the species of human I created for my Under the Northern Sky trilogy. The final book, The Cuckoo, has just been released in the US and Canada, which seems as good a time as any to examine some of the other influences.

Leo Carew answered Lincoln's question: Is there any chance you will end up making any other books continuing or corresponding with the “Under the Northern Sky” series? I don’t read a lot but I read the wolf book and loved it and read the other two and it is by far the best series I have ever read. I’m so pleased you enjoyed! Never say never, I may well return to the series one day but it would be a long way off. For now I’m researching a historical fiction on the Aztecs and Cortez, so anything else might take a while
