The traitor Gu Mang returned to his home kingdom again. Everyone rejoiced in his banishment. It was said the one who hated him most was his closest friend – the cold and stoic Young Master Mo.

A rumour: Young Master Mo prepared three hundred and sixty-five methods of torture to try on Gu Mang, enough to play with him for a year without repetition.

But what’s the truth then?

Well the truth is even more unspeakable–

Mo Xi’s identity: the most abstinent commander of the empire.

3.5 ☆

"Whether we live or die, I will always love you and be proud of you."

Two things:
1. This book made me fall more in love with 2HA than I already did how it could be possible is beyond me
2. Ximang are DEFINITELY not Wangxian, like NOT AT ALL maybe im just being biased but still i mean I love Gu Mang and Mo Xi (somewhat) but comparing them to ✨parents✨ is a stretch imo

I did not not like this book iykwim. But it was surely a disappointment, especially when Meatbun has given me the man, the myth, the legend himself, Taxian. Fucking. Jun.

Like you're telling me that after "hell is too cold chu wanning i'll take u to the grave with me.", "i hate u so much but youre all i have left", going inside through the window to take care of the man you HATE bcs you promised yourself you wont go through the door in 2HA, you give me Mo Xi??? FUCKING MO XI???

And I know, I KNOWWWW I shouldn't compare these two books I know it but I can't not after getting my hopes so high.

That's not to say I didn't like Mo Xi. I even understood why he was so cold with Gu Mang. Honestly, was he even cold tho?? He was lowkey moron too with the way he was all ihatehimihatehimihatehim but i cant let him die thing he had going on. And the man is H O T icl

If there's one thing Meatbun men know how to do the best, it's serving boy-obsessed, touch-him-and-you-die, i-hate-you-but-i-cant-leave-you, you-came-you-called ughsyehsj I'm on my knees plsssss

Gu Mang was definitely my favourite character in this book. (after Murong Lian i knowww okayy dont judge me i just have a thing for assholes with anger issues who are softies inside) My man went through so much definitely wwx with the way he wouldnt care what anyone thinks as long as hes doing what he believes to be right And maybe this is why I do have a soft spot for him bcs atp it's not a secret how much I love WWX.

🗣️ WWX 🗣️ AND 🗣️ GU 🗣️ MANG 🗣️ CAN 🗣️ DO 🗣️ NO 🗣️ WRONG 🗣️

His relationship with Mo Xi was so soft- the head pats, the forehead kisses, the way he calls Mo Xi his "princess", the way all they wanted a home together bye I want what they have minus the angst

Also, whoever said its angstier than 2HA was lying. It had its moments where I was sobbing, tearing up, screaming into my pillow but 2HA hurt more tbh or maybe im just immune to angst now

Honestly, if the first 50% would've been wrapped up sooner and were the second half of the book been stretched out more, it definitely would've been more fun because the last 90 something chapters were a fucking treat. The plot twists, the revelations, the character development, the angst, the romance, I was eating it up. I LOVED IT.

There is a lot more I want to say but I'll keep that for the official translations.

ALSO THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS BOOK WAS DEFINITELY TAXIAN JUN IN THE AUTHORS NOTES I WAS DYING 😭 not him giving mo xi advice on how to be a good bottom only to know hes the top and the way he went "????????? how can the ice beauty be the top!???????????" plssss i love that man smmmm hes so dumb 😭😭😭

IM SORRY I KEEP TALKING ABOUT MORON HEJSKS

Pls dont look at my rating tho bcs this novel is gooooood- I've seen many ppl like it even more than 2HA. The story is amazing, the characters *chefs kiss* the plot twists mindblowing, its more of a me problem not connecting enough to the story for more than 50% of it and mo xi's too for being a shitty boyfriend but we dont talk about about that

_

2HA WAS BETTERRRRRRRR

rtc when my brain finally starts braining 🤡

_

so the official translation is releasing soon and i need to read it before that but im scared help my cousin dnfed at the FOURTH CHAPTER bcs its too angsty how worse can it be after 2ha 😭😭😭

I'm scared this will be too problematic for me but I want a book that's more painful than my essay assignments and this looks like it delivers. I've heard this is angst central over here

update: ow ow ow i'm just on chapter six how much more pain can we get (i'm guessing the answer is A Lot)

update no. 2: Okay, in conclusion, this IS problematic, what the fuck

update no. 3: #MoXiStopBeingADickChallenge
Ooh! Your boyfriend stabbed you in the back! GUESS WHAT I DON'T CARE. GO DIE IN HELL AND STOP BULLYING YOUR EX WHO IS NOW A SLAVE.
Oh, and #BLAuthorsStopFetishizingQueerMenChallenge

update no. 4: Not me reading 3/4 of this book in one day as an act of self-harm 🤡 No, my essay is not written yet, help me

I laughed at Shen Qingqiu for hate-reading a webnovel, yet here I am. I'm just praying I don't choke on a steamed bun and transmigrate into the world

Update no. 5: You know that word manpain? Well, that word pretty much sums up Mo Xi's entire existence. "My ex is the victim of multiple war crimes, has lost his mind, been enslaved, and sold to a brothel, but have you considered that the REAL tragedy of this story is that I feel bad about what happened to my ex sometimes? But man, I also hate my ex. How could he have stabbed me in the back like that? I'm going to act 'nice' to him except not really and sometimes I decide that I hate him again and act mean. Man, I go through so much. I am a full-grown adult." He also has this whole thing in the beginning where he refers to his (SEX SLAVE) ex as a 'slut' in the narration. I WANT TO INTRODUCE MO XI'S FACE TO MY HEAVIEST CAST IRON FRYING PAN. Also, it's the way Mo Xi acts MORE respectful toward his ex once his ex recovers from the mental disability that does it for me?? Like you're only going to be a bitch to Gu Mang when he literally can't defend himself and can't talk back?? What the fuck. 0 stars go jump in a fire Mo Xi. Anyway, I'm going to make myself stop reading this book (I am curious about some of the upcoming plot twists, but man it is NOT worth it).

In conclusion, this reads like one of the '80s most problematic romance novels, but make it gay. Whyyyy.

All the characters need therapy.

2023 being my year of danmeis and baihes, because I would have never completed my reading if I hadn't experienced meatbun's writing in 2HA.

Yu Wu or Remnants of Filth, is about general Mo Xi and his estranged friend Gu Mang who has lost all his memories after betraying his people and the king. Learning about his capture, catapults Mo Xi into uncovering the truth behind his friend's betrayal. Using the term friend loosely of course.
According to me the book has 4 major arcs: Mo Xi meeting Gu Mang after years, Gu Mang's truth, The King's hand of play and The Yue Clan Mess. The book, though more than 3k pages, felt like a pleasant reading despite being of 197 chapters. Like 2HA, a good communication would have saved us the time but gay men in meatbun's books find it repulsive to stay healthy and have toxic free crushes. Yu wu offered the craziest plot with the side pair, I thought I was done by ch 134 but as I read on the plot made 0 sense and it is a twisted mess. The side characters made a bigger impression and played a huge role in latter half. As compared to Ranwan, MangXi had a less toxic romance. But that's where I'd like to end the comparison. The xianxia elements of the novel flew over my head, I found the plot so messy. It needs a good amount of editing. Especially in the last 10 chapters when a certain major event occurs and it is downplayed due to lack of time. I love how meatbun never fails to deliver the angst romance part of plot, she's too good and especially writing about betrayals. A good restructuring of the book and editing will help a lot.

And here are three more weeks of my life spent reading chinese novels.

I have two thoughts.
1) 2ha is better.
2) Yu Wu, nevertheless, is a very good novel, undoubtedly, one of my favourites.

Also, I'm going to be extensively comparing 2ha and Yu Wu.
And I'll be nitpicking all the smallest flaws in Yu Wu (because it's much easier to tell what i disliked than to try to pick out positive thoughts from the emotional mess Yu Wu left my mind to be).

That's said, let's proceed.

Structure
Fun fact I've noticed - most of chinese bl novels are... all over the place. They seemingly just can't keep to one consistent storyline, changing tone and topics every 20 chapters or so, mixing genres etc. This is, coincidentally, the type of writing I enjoy the most, as long as the characters stay consistent.
It happes both in 2ha and Yu Wu (and in most novels I've read so far, the only exeptions I could think of are MXTX's Mo Dao Zu Shi / The founder of diabolism and priest's Mo Du / Silent Reading)

In Yu Wu's case, we go from the MC hating everything around himself and general angst, to info dumpy flashbacks, to exploring telenovela-type family relationships, which turns into a bloodbath, and this family bloodbath then grows into a court bloodbath. And all this occasionally slips into, like, military fantasy (if you're out of date ideas, consider inviting your boyfriend to join you on a military campaign, am I right?)

When we get to the second half of Yu Wu, we start experiencing one plot twist after another, and it doesn't stop until the end. The amount of revelations grows absolutely ridiculous in the last 30-40 chapters. There are like 10 to 15 plot twists every chapter, and I'm not exaggerating. At a certain point I grew numb to all this and started treating the novel as a comedy. At another point I had to take a piece of paper and try to figure out the family tree. By the end there remained like one character from the cast who wasn't directly involved in some sort of a conspiracy.

General tone
Both 2ha and Yu Wu utilize contrasts to produce their angst - mostly by flashbacks - but they are implied in an ever so slightly different manner.

In 2ha it was like that: we have a heart-warming scene in the present time-line, during which there is a flashback to Mo Ran being a jerk in one way or another. So the reader is angry with Mo Ran from the past, but has a happy cathartic feeling towards the present situation - which equals to a very rewarding kind of angst.

In Wu Yu it's the opposite. Flashbacks depict the happy times in the past, while the present seems absolutely hopelese. Max desperation mode on.

2ha generally has a more positive tone to it, especially in the earlier part, where Mo Ran feels happy and relieved for getting a chance to relive his life. The 2ha cast even has a chance to go on a couple of abventures before all the mind-blowing stuff starts happening.

And it's really, really not the case with Yu Wu. Yu Wu more or less feels like 2ha, but all the happy moments are cut out, which leads us to my next point --

Why 2ha is better
I generally found Yu Wu less detailed. 2ha had all this little consistent details, which were occasionally brought up here and there. Like, Chu Wanning's character is highly associated with the haitang flowers. And the two leads' weapons were almost their own characters, often playing a really big part in a given scene.

Yu Wu also had simillar plot points, but the details dindn't feel... alive? And they didn't bring that much to the story.

The word-building in Yu Wu doesn't play a big role either. Admittedly, 2ha and Yu Wu are set in the same universe, which was properly explained in 2ha already, so the author dindn't have a need to go into the world's details in Yu Wu. And, considering how much more popular 2ha is, most people who read Yu Wu have previously read 2ha and are acquainted with the world's intricacies. But still, it makes Yu Wu less detailed.

In conclusion
Yu Wu is a great piece of literature with a very complex storyline and multi-dimensional characters. It broke my heart over and over and left my feelings in an absolute mess. A perfect read if you want to suffer. A must-read if you liked 2ha.
With that, I wouldn't recommend reading Yu Wu right after 2ha, because the stories are, at the end of the day, too similar. Wait a couple months in between before getting into Yu Wu.

This is a really good book.

Stuff I liked:
1. When it comes to the use of Chekov’s gun, nobody can compare to Meatbun. Nobody. Every little detail, no matter how seemingly insignificant IS IMPORTANT. No detail goes to waste, and ends up playing a crazy important role later in the book, and the moment when everything comes together - it’s mind-blowing and easily some of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen.
2. The plot. As usual, Meatbun delivers a really trippy plot where you have no clue who is the big bad guy. You can’t trust anyone. Some of the cruelest characters might turn out to be the nicest people in the world. Some of the nicest people might turn out to be really dark and evil. I thought I had a pretty good guess about who was good or bad. But oh boy, I was so wrong.
3. Also, I love how intricate the plot is. So many different layers, so many different lies. As Mo Xi unravels the mystery one later at a time… I’m in awe of Meatbun’s galaxy brain. How does one simply think of a plot so complex. How.
4. MO XI AND GU MANG. Both of them suffered so much. So much angst and pain. My heart bleeds for those two. But what they have is so pure, but the PAIN they go through to get to their happy ending… I swear, I was literally SCREAMING at some parts begging for Meatbun to show them mercy PLEASE but oh no. Meatbun shows no mercy. They suffer immensely. But thank god, they have a happy ending. They deserve it so much.

Stuff I found interesting:
1. When I first started reading it, I was struck by how similar this is to MDZS. The return of a public enemy who practices demonic cultivation? A jokester with a heart that cares for his people with a seemingly cold and distant lover who is actually immensely loving and caring? It kinda felt like reading MDZS but dark. But despite these initial similarities, the plot takes over really soon, and they’re definitely completely different books.

Stuff I disliked:
1. I could be wrong, but I feel like Meatbun might have a slight problem: she goes a little too extreme. I love how extreme she is, she’s not afraid to get her characters emotional, but sometimes, it’s a little too emotional. Rather than feeling the angst, I just start feeling awkward. Furthermore, she has the characters sometimes just do some uncharacteristic things that are just so bizarre it kind of takes me out of the reading experience.
2. I didn’t really like the last ten chapters. I was so ready for the one final battle and then the conclusion and happy ending but NOPE. We got launched into another twisty little plot that ended with a deus ex machina, and idk. It just felt kind of unnecessary? Or maybe I’m just not able to appreciate it since I’m still struggling with Chinese. Oh well.

One last note: I know I shouldn’t compare this to 2Ha, but I’m going to do it anyway! Out of the two books, 2Ha definitely has a much more significant impact, because it goes from some of the most wholesome things you’ve ever seen to really dark shit that leaves you reeling from how extreme it is, whereas Yuwu starts of dark and heavy, and remains dark and heavy till the end. 2Ha is also a lot more humorous, and as someone who loves humor, I really appreciated that. However, Meatbun definitely learned a lot from 2Ha. Yuwu is much better written, a lot easier to follow, and I wasn’t exhausted when I finished the book. Everything was still really extreme and if you’re looking for angst, you’re definitely gonna get it, but it didn’t leave me smashing my kindle into the wall out of frustration and exhaustion and rage, so that was really good too.
Ultimately… I’d say that 2Ha is the better of the two novels, but both are really inspiring in their own unique ways, and definitely worth a read :)

He quietly followed along, reciting those vows that had once been carved into his mind yet were now unfamiliar: "We share in the robes of war, no victory, no return..." He mounted an ordinary warhorse the color of dates, the plumes on his helmet waving in the wind. The city gates opened, and the army moved north. In that moment, once more, he returned to the side of his old friends, his comrades, and his Northern Frontier Army, as an insignificant footsoldier.

This was totally not what I expected from the title or the summary - it was better (then again, one shouldn't trust titles/summaries of danmei novels; they're usually so far off the mark it's ridiculous.) I don't want to talk about the plot because... it's better to just read it. All I want to say is that, as 2ha prequel, Yu Wu totally lived up to the hype (and 10/10 do read 2ha before reading Yu Wu - there are so many references and parallels it'd be such a loss to miss them ._.)

I had absolutely loved 2ha by the author and this novel, though a bit underrated, is highly hyped one in the danmei world which promises the same angsty style of the plot with memorable characters. That was all I needed to dive into this.

Now that I’ve read it, my feelings are…very mixed.

I enjoyed the plot. Not as much as I hoped for. Maybe I was looking to get astonished the way 2ha got me and I KNOW it’s wrong to compare them like that but I can’t help it and hence I set the path for my own discontent. All of those aside, it did have the same Meatbun style which compels the reader to have all these theories and predictions as they make their way through only to get shocked with the insane plot-twists that leave them gasping.

I loved the characters, with all their flaws and shiz. There were quite a few times where Meatbun had them do completely uncharacteristic things and it did put me off, honestly.

There are quite a few things I learned about writing while reading this book (& 2ha).

When it comes to plot twists, the way and the places where they are built and slowly developed matter so much rather than having a character do complete turnaround and give your audience a shock they don’t even appreciate.

Both 2ha and this novel had a lot of plot twists. Both could’ve been perfect had the author had stopped adding shock value to the original plot-twists so creatively devised because after a certain point (You’ll definitely know what I’m talking about if you’ve read them), those plot-twists start becoming insane and threaten to cross the border of tragically funny.

My reading experience was also largely influenced by the English translation available, which had me read rather pathetically after 75% mark only to be able get through all of the plot and secrets hidden.

do yourself a favor and read yu wu, fin.

READ YU WU, the end!

As far as Chinese BL novels go, Yu Wu is tied with Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation for being my favorite story.

*This novel has graphic sexual content* You have been warned.

yuwu focuses on the story of Gu Mang who was originally a slave, turned into a great general, who eventually betrayed not only his country but his former lover Mo Xi..or so the story goes.

It starts off with Gu Mang being sent back to his home country as a POW, he cutivation skills, memory were both destroyed and he was sent to a brothel where he meets Mo Xi two years later. He is only being kept alive via the emperor's orders as they want to use him for some kind of demonic cultivation experiments and once he is no longer of use, he is to be executed. (At the time of his return, Mo Xi was stationed at the frontier - far away from the capital city so he was not around when Gu Mang returns).

Yuwu has A LOT of angst, sadness and not everything as how it appears to be. Mo Xi uncovers the truth of what really happened in the past and why Gu Mang "defected" to the enemy country.

You must get through the angst to reach that happy ending though.

It's no secret that Roubao writes angsty novels. I've read 2ha as well and to me, the other archetype populating her books is noble idiot (being the sacrificial martyr in silence). Chu Wanning, Gu Mang. Of course the villians hiding behind a deceptive exterior. The reading experience for me was disjointed mainly due to translation continuity, after reading up to ch 160 a year and a half ago, the online fan translator pulled her translations (not sure if it was due to jjwcx's announcement of an international site). So coming back to read 20 more chapters of a mtl was a little disorienting. In short, nobody is who they are on the surface and birth secrets galore. For 2ha fans, there's an easter egg in here! I was by the two-thirds mark just slightly curious about Murong Lian and Jiang Yuxue. Curiosity satisfied, stopping at ch 178 as I'm currently knee deep in another more intriguing xianxia novel. 3.5⭐️

in the end, you and i were always together. in life and death, i’ll love you forever, you’ll always make me proud.

reread : i thought i was prepared to read this book for a second time, turns out i clearly wasn’t. in fact, knowing every single thing that was going to happen in advance only made it more painful. going through all the details behind yuwu’s beautiful plot all over again knowing how every single one of them was going to conclude only made this path that i had already traveled before a thousand times worse. but despite how much my heart has been hurting for the past week bc of this novel, i’m also glad i decided to read it again (even if it’s only been 3 months since i read it for the first time). as i just said, yuwu is a story that hides so many plot twists and beautiful details that u can only fully enjoy once u read it a second time, and that’s what i decided to do. this has to be one of my favourite novels ever, and i don’t think i’ll ever get tired of it or ximang. i truly love those two sillies so much.

1st read : sighs, how do i even start this. this novel has had me SO hooked during the last week and a half that i am HEARTBROKEN to have finally finished it.

i’ll put it simply: read yuwu. this novel is so incredibly good for so many different reasons. the politics, the character writing, the constant plot twists and —of course— the main couple —all of them will have you obsessed from the very first page.
i had put yuwu on hold for a long time before starting it because i didn’t feel emotionally prepared for what reading this novel means. and i’m glad i did, cause i feel like i wouldn’t have enjoyed as much as i did if i had read it when i wasn’t ready. damn, the angst was so intense and painful from the very start of the novel and it didn’t stop for a single second, however, it still was a very beautiful read and i absolutely adored how everything was developed.

before finishing this review, if you’re reading this and haven’t read yuwu yet, all i’ll say is that you should definitely go ahead and read it without hesitation, the chances of loving it are extremely high. yuwu has now become one of my favourite danmeis ever and you will not see me shutting up about it in a long time lmao. 🫠

The best thing about this story is that every chapter is so utterly hopeless that eventually you get used to being in the middle of this boiling pool of sadness, and by the end of the book you are so emotionally exhausted that nothing really gets to you. (Everything does, actually).

100/10 would recommend for my enemies, if I had any.

Yuwu will break your heart, give you some lightly bittersweet and heartwarming moments, and then break it again, and repeat. Gu Mang and Mo Xi are two good, mostly honest, flawed people living in a society where very few people can be truly good if they want to survive. If you've read 2ha, I would say that Yuwu, despite having more holy weapons and magical beasts, feels less grand (but not in a bad way). It feels like watching two normal people struggle to live and love each other while war, class divisions, and the empire's secrets and internal conflicts happen around them and pull them apart. The side characters are also very well developed, and learning how they all fall into place in the grand scheme set by one or two of the characters was very satisfying. If 2ha was "there should be no rich or upper class," Yuwu is "monarchy, nobility, and other inherited statuses are a detriment to both the people they rule over and the monarchs and nobles themselves."

The only gripe I have with the book is the pace of the ending, though that is likely due to the fact that the book wasn't originally intended to be an ancient cultivation setting in the first place and the author had to make some last minute changes. It isn't enough for me to remove a star, because frankly, Mo Xi and Gu Mang deserved that ending, and I think it's amazing that Meatbun was able to change the setting and make it fit the way that she did.

If you've read 2ha, it is a shared universe so there are some fun little things here and there to discover.

What a freaking rollercoaster. Not just any rollercoaster, but the rollercoaster from Phineas and Ferb. (Remember that one?)

It genuinely felt like my heart was launched into space and then plunged back down to earth in the deepest depths of the ocean. Or a volcano, whichever one is scarier.

Plot twist after plot twist after plot twist.
In a lot of books the "plot twists" are very obvious and you can see them coming from miles away, and that always makes me sad. But with this book, most of the plot twist were actually amazing and deserving of the name (....plot twist).

I screamed at this book, I laughed at this book, I went through the 5 stages of grief with this book. And I would do it all over again.

For me, this was 2080 pages of pure torture. Because DAMN, this shit hurt. But I would do it all over again because these characters actually made me feel like I knew them and like I was living right along side them. (And I love them 😭, they are my geges now)

An amazing book written by an amazing author, deserving of all 5 of my stars. I will even give some more. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you for this journey.

Now I am going to read the extra chapters and also continue 2ha. (I only started this book because I was waiting for novel 2 of 2ha, what if I hadn't?? Maybe I would still have tears left in my body....)

If your have read Husky and his white cat shizun...i have only one thing to say. By all means, dive in.
This is such a beautiful story and so well written!!!! I came out a different person, inspired to be as good a lover as Mo Xi and have the resilience and will power of Gu Mang. All characters undergo huge character development. The ancestry of Chu Wanning (My sweestest!!!) explained was also tooo good.

"Mo Xi knew that as long as there was darkness, there would be light. People's
kindness and strength were the seeds that would never die. Even in the most
narrow world, they would always wake up and sprout."

This whole novel had me weeping and refreshed.

P/S": DO NOT COMPARE IT WITH 2HA (which has wider and broader world building, setting and fantasy) but it is worthy on being on the same pedestal as 2HA. If they ever make a live action series out of this one, I SWEAAARRRR that would make my day (cant wait for "Immortality")

Dear Author,
I cant wait to read you next novel and I will cherish these two novels forever and remember them because of how they made me FEEL and THINK - and most importantly about they made me BELIEVE in the goodness that lies within all of us, that love can heal and change people, that no matter how dark the night is - the sun will always rise. <3

On-hold @ 67%. Meatbun is a master at character-building & angst. She does complex plots, foreshadowing, flashbacks, etc. like a maestro. Yuwu is no different. My heart bled for each and every character. Even the worst ones were truly hard to hate entirely.

But unlike 2HA (which I adored), Yuwu is ALL angst & ALL despair ALL THE TIME. 2HA took me a few months to read, I tried to read Yuwu in a week and maybe that was the problem. I was tearing up and heartbroken all the time and by the time I hit chap 133 (ironically these next few chapters are supposed to be lighthearted and romantic), my brain balked at moving forward. So I'm putting this on the backburner for now. Not sure if I can return to finish the rest. I hear it's angst until the end...with a HEA. Right now I can't fathom how that's possible. We'll see.

But Gu Mang, Mo xi, Gu Mang's closest sworn brother, Fourth Uncle, Jiang Yexue, Murong Lian... all of them have a special place in my heart. I have severe book hangover, but can't seem to push forward.

3/5

Angst written for the sake of angst sure is a turn off and makes the angst boring.

Meatbun’s writing is beautiful but it feels too much dragged later. I was re-reading yuwu first few chapters and as I recalled the entire plot, I realized how terrible the plot execution is as the author tries to insert every idea she had for the novel, introduces characters and new plots messily. Moreover, I read this before 2ha and while I was reading 2ha.. there were many similarities. And no, it isn’t because they share same universe.

“I will give you a home.”

I don't have words I just feel like I crawled back from hell, as in this story is SO EMOTIONALLY PAINFUL but then you get a wonderful ending and the characters are SO GOOD so it's all worth it.

(I know 4.25 it's closer to 4 stars than 5 stars but I really don't want to give this novel 4 stars sdghjkln)
