Comment before reading:

Luckily I encountered the art before the phrase "tastes her drool".

---

But no, actually it was unlucky, because those panels where they're dreaming this complex, crazy world are the only interesting part. Otherwise the art is pedestrian, unless you are interested in sketches of panties. The protagonist is boring.

I sort wanted to know what was up with the dreams and the magic drool etc, but not enough to continue reading the series.

Akira Tsubaki is a normal 17-year-old high school student. New student Mikoto Urabe appears to be anything but normal. Her bangs cover her eyes, she sleeps during lunch and class breaks, bursts out laughing in the middle of class for no apparent reason and carries scissors in her panties. All very odd and mysterious. One day, Tsubaki wakes Urabe up after school is over, and notices that she’s left a puddle of drool on her desk. Impulsively, he tastes it.

That night, Tsubaki has a dream set in a bizarre cityscape, and he and Urabe dance together. A couple of days later, Tsubaki falls ill for a week. Urabe hears people talking about it and puts together what’s happened. She visits Tsubaki’s home, lying to Tsubaki’s older sister about why she’s there, and lets Tsubaki taste some of her drool off her finger. He feels better, and she explains that he’s now addicted to her spit. Why? “That’s just the way I am.”

Over time, Urabe lets Tsubaki taste her drool on a daily basis, and sometimes she tastes his. Eventually, they become a couple, though Tsubaki is still baffled by his mysterious girlfriend.

This seinen (young men’s) manga ran in the monthly Afternoon magazine, and this edition contains the first two Japanese volumes. The author mentions in his notes that the lead characters are seventeen so that there is a question as to whether sex will happen. (A couple of years younger, they definitely wouldn’t in this kind of story, a couple of years older, and they definitely would.) That doesn’t happen in this volume, though there is male-oriented fanservice and one outright nudity scene. Mr. Ueshiba has gone on record that he thinks too many young people rush straight to sex when they’re in love, and he wanted to show a couple enjoying other ways of connecting (some quite kinky) that don’t involve putting Tab A into Slot B.

Tsubaki, as the “normal” boy, is kind of bland. He has normal sexual urges and a pleasant way about him. He does quickly learn to let Urabe take the lead in how fast she wants to take the relationship and what they will be doing. He also figures out quickly ways of reassuring her about his faithfulness while still having other female friends.

Urabe is fiercely protective of her secrets. Where did she get her saliva-based psychic powers? How did she learn her ability to cut through anything with safety scissors? Why is she so sensitive about being touched without her permission? What does she do outside school when she’s not with Tsubaki? All deflected with “that’s just the way I am” or ignored. She’s also not one to ask unsolicited questions, so only slowly learns about Tsubaki’s background.

We do learn that swapping spit only has unusual effects with people Urabe has a connection of some kind with. She also turns out to be very normal in some ways, liking cute kittens and being shy about wearing a bikini. Her bedroom also looks normal, but her family is not home at the time so we don’t get any information on them.

There’s another couple that appears frequently, Tsubaki’s friend Ueno and his tiny sweetheart Oka (who becomes Urabe’s first female friend.) They have a more “normal” relationship and Oka helps Urabe open up a bit to social interaction and eating lunch.

As mentioned, there’s a fair amount of kinkiness and it’s very male-oriented–I think it will appeal most to senior high male readers and up who like romance with a bit of mysteriousness attached.

It’s a good romance, but you need to be able to stomach the fact that the way the author decided to represent the idea of emotional connection and the way emotions can be shared as relationships develop is through the sharing of saliva, it’s pretty disgusting tbh, but other than that the main two have good chemistry and the scissors gag is pretty amusing

4 stars, I really liked it. Rating the whole series

It was a very well done light romance slice of life manga, with good characters and a main character who isn't a total wuss. It perfectly captures the spirit of the imagined high school experience.

Characters: 4.5/5 I really liked them
World: 2.5/5 It's fine
Story: 4/5 I really liked it

Characters:
The characters are multi layered and have deep interactions. It is especially good since most of this is done as a slice of life stories, where authors sometimes fall into the trap of repeating interactions.

World:
It does what it needs to and not much more. The world feels alive, and the art, while basic, does a good job of capturing that.

Story:
It was good. Despite the racy promises at the beginning, the story is really about the pure high school experience. I appreciated the varies and interesting side characters, who never overshadowed the main characters, but provided color and life to the pages.

Mysterious Girlfriend X
Author: Riichi Ueshiba
Genre: Romantic, Comedy
Volume 1 of 13

Over-view

I bought this manga like 6 or 7 months back, in all honesty I bought it because it was a great buy on a four-book series, especially a manga. I have to say this was a great read, and I really enjoyed the characters. The book takes place in high school and the two main characters build up a relationship which starts slowly. A boy who appears to be 17 years old named Akira Tsubaki tries to make friends with the new girl named Mikoto Urabe. But she seems so uninterested in making friends with anyone. She just sleeps than makes friends with anyone. She keeps her bangs covering half her face, and she keeps scissors in her underwear. She is just a strange girl, even the girls cannot get her to eat with them.
Thats where Akira comes in and he's an odd one as well. One day he goes to wake up Mikoto, and he notices she has left a drool on her desk. So, him having a moment, dips his finger into it and tastes it. WHY?!! Of everything to do!!! Why?!
From that moment on, Tsubaki life changed. He took sick and stayed out of school for days. Therefore, that led Mikoto to go to Tsubaki house. When she gets there, she takes her hand, puts it in her mouth and convince him to suck the drool off. Mikoto is a very strange girl, and as the book progresses on, she becomes more and more jealous. I believe at first, she knew she had to make things right by him. By going to Tsubaki house and making him better. I do not believe at first “slob exchanged” that she liked him as much as he liked her.
I cannot express how much I enjoyed this book a lot!!! I enjoyed the story plot, I enjoyed Tsubaki and his shy, cool guy personality and Mikoto, and her tough girl persona!!! I have book two I can not wait to dive in.
Recommendation:
This author also writes a book called Discommunication that seems pretty good. But it also has the same story as of a boy meeting a girl and their relationship is weird also by society standards.

What in the ever loving heck... Let’s do the disclaimer first - this book is squicky. Not in a filthy or prurient way, mind, but it takes the concept of ‘swapping spit’ to levels heretofore undreamt of by modern man.

One day after class, Tsubaki tastes the drool of Urabe, the cute new girl in his class, and finds he has a taste for it. Literally. She’s more than happy to provide and if you’re already grossed out at any of this, run for the hills. I avoided this book forever because the concept seemed impossibly gross to me.

And it is.

However, that’s not the good part of the story. Everything else is a cute look at the what-the-hell-do-I-do-next phase that young love goes through, filtered through some bizarre fantastical elements (that drool, make no mistake, has special powers). The crazy part is that it rings true - the unknowable nature of a new girlfriend, particularly at that age, feels like the way this story is written, even if the details are completely bonkers.

The developing relationship is so indescribably weird, Urabe isn’t just a drool repository but a whole mess of idiosyncrasies, but it’s believable and the two clearly care for one another. Watching them grow, even amidst what is tantamount to body horror for me, is a real pleasure.

Wonderful artwork, a playful side, some fun side characters (Oka turns out to be a lot more than her initial appearances lead you to believe). I’m shockingly looking forward to another volume of this.

3,5 stars.

This series will probably be off putting to some as the main topic is drool, but it's extremely quirky and incredibly sweet.

When I first started this series I had a wtf am I reading moment but couldn't stop myself from continuing on. I ended up reading all 12 books in one day and loved every minute of it.

This wasn't your typical Alice of life school manga. There were aspects of vaudeville and the Adams family mixed with unique subject matter.

The anime does capture the feel of the manga but being there was only one 13 episodes season there was a lot left out. I highly suggest reading this series if you have watched the manga.

Probably a 2.5 for me. The premise is interesting in an almost magical realism way: people can communicate their innermost feelings with drool. If you can get past that and the abundance of panty shots you might enjoy this. The art is pretty decent (though everyone looks 8 but we'll ignore that for now) and the two leads feel firmly grounded in their reality.

I don't know if I'd pick up another volume of this series personally but I can think of a few people I'd recommend this to.

A weird but somewhat compelling premise that eventually fizzled out as the story got stale. The main characters never had much development of their personalities or their relationship. Which is odd because many of the side characters had more complete stories/personalities than the main characters.

A series I decided to get because I remembered the anime, it was a guilty pleasure of mine, the romance was cute even if you have to look past the drool part. Urabe is so cute, I'm curious what happens after the anime ended!

Again one of those cases of you either get it or you don’t. It really is a singular manga so I can see why people are divided but it is, in my opinion, one of greatest love story in manga. Ik it sounds stupid but once you get over the whole drool tasting thing it is actually really beautiful

Kind of a cute story?? Definitely checking out the next volume. It's kind of interesting and the relationship is kind of adorable. Plus the author's insight on 17-year olds in relationships is rather accurate lol

Mysterious Girlfriend X combines an early 00s feel with an incredibly quirky storyline surrouding drool and affection. I have to admit that while that concept does carry a certain gross-out factor, after a few dozen pages, I felt less "ew" and more curious and a way for the characters to come to understand each other. And while not necessarily for everyone, I found the overall story really earnest in its reflection on the odd mix of feelings that happen for a lot of people during high school, especially around first relationships and first romantic loves.

The art reminds me a lot of late 90s/early 00s media, carrying a bit of a nostalgic feeling. For me, this only made things a bit mor eenjoyable, though I'm a fan of slice of life: I was determined to enjoy things regardless!

And ultimately, I did: I think that their relationship is played rather charmingly, and though a ton of mystery surrounds her, female protag Urabe Mikoto makes me want to see this story through.

I'm excited to see where Mikoto and Tsubaki's relationship goes over the next few volumes! On to volume 2!

Fun, flirty, and a little confusing, Mysterious Girlfriend X does a great job evoking that feeling of falling for the weird girl in your high school. With her Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club haircut covering her eyes, Mikoto is a cypher to her boyfriend, Akira, but that doesn't mean his feelings for her are any less real, and it's a heartwarming treat to watch their love grow. The character design is really cute and expressive, but the art never gets too gonzo (and, thankfully for a book dealing with teen sexuality, never too explicit). Great stuff for the weird romantic in your life.

This is a strange premise, but I enjoyed the first volume of this series. There's a lot of drool in this narrative -- literally so -- and while I understand why Ueshiba is focusing his manga on a high-school population, there's something "curious" about his handling of young women. I'm not judging here. I'll probably go on to read the other volumes as they come out. We discussed this book on the May episode of our manga series: http://comicsalternative.com/manga-re....

I picked this up on a whim. It was an interesting way to explore romantic bonds , but it was a bit too out there for me. I didn't get a chance to connect to the characters and alot of the "mystery" was just things left unexplained.

It's fun to see the characters secretly arousing each other with their spit. The sorry can be a little frustrating, but most of the time ends satisfying enough.
