This is the second novella in the Chaotic Orbits series, and though it isn’t as action-packed and intense as the first book, Full Speed to a Crash LanThis is the second novella in the Chaotic Orbits series, and though it isn’t as action-packed and intense as the first book, Full Speed to a Crash Landing, it was still a quick and entertaining read.
The story picks up not long after the ending of Full Speed to a Crash Landing with Ada attending a posh gala with the directive to steal something of importance. Of course, Ada has more than one scheme going on, and the reader (and Rian) is left trying to figure out what her true motives are. Rian, knowing that Ada will be there, is also in attendance, and he is determined to ensure Ada doesn't trick him again.
After the surprising twist at the end of the last book, I was really interested in seeing how Rian would react to seeing Ada again. They have such amazing chemistry, but lies, subterfuge, distrust, and opposing political views are some hefty obstacles for the pair to face. I love their banter and the sexual tension between them, and I can’t wait to see what happens with them in the next story!
What really stands out in this novella is Ada. She’s a complex and fascinating protagonist with a quick wit and sharp intellect. Morally grey and more than a little shady, Ada isn’t the most reliable narrator, as she always seems to be hiding something, but that’s part of the fun of the story - you never know what she’s going to do next or what her real intentions are.
This novella also delves deeper into the political unrest in the galaxy as well as social and environmental issues that feel relatable despite the sci-fi setting and premise. Even in space, you can’t get away from greedy leaders who thrive in a capitalist culture, and it’s interesting to see Rian and Ada’s views on what’s happening since they both want the same thing, to save the people and planets, but go about it in different ways.
I’m loving this series! It’s fun and exciting, and it is a great balance of suspense, romance, and humor. I can’t wait for book three and am hoping we’ll see more of the Halifax crew in the next book. Special thanks to NetGalley and DAW for providing me with a copy of the book. Star Bringer is an exciting and immersive sci-fi that’s kind of like Aurora Rising meets The Breakfast Club meets Firefly. It follows seven people thrown together after an explosive and catastrophic event who must work together to survive, especially when they learn they are all wanted dead or alive. The plot is layered, fast-paced, and full of twists and turns and unexpected revelations,.
The story is told from several characters’ perspectives, which I liked because they are all so different. It really allows you to understand what each is thinking, feeling, and dealing with. Kali, the princess, Ian, the mercenary, Rain, the high Priestess, and Beckett, the escaped prisoner, are some of my favorites. They each have such a unique story to tell, and each perspective is as compelling as the last.
I feel like using the varied points of view gives so much insight into the characters as well as the setting, political dynamics, and more. The characters are layered and intriguing, as are the different relationship dynamics. Friendships, new and old, family, and enemies are all traveling together on a ship that is way more than meets the eye (so cool!), and their changing and growing relationships are as fascinating as the setting and plot. Even though the crew members are all so different, they slowly grow into this wonderful kind of family, and they work together really well. They become a unit, and their banter, actions, and the different points of view show how these strangers learn to work and fight together and protect and trust each other.
And the romances! Sa-woon!! There are two stand-out love stories, and I adored them both. Kali and Ian have total enemies-to-lovers vibes, and I was here for it! I always adore an angsty romance, and the princess and mercenary have it in spades. Their chemistry is off the charts, and the way they constantly gravitate toward each other without even realizing just makes my heart squeeze. I would like to officially declare Ian my new book boyfriend because I adore this snarky, protective, brooding, and loving hunk of a man.
The other main love story is more grumpy-sunshine, and it was wonderful. Where Ian and Kali have a lot of angst and sexual tension and fire, Beckett and Rain have more of a soft, sweet, and sexy love story. Their romance feels so pure and innocent, which I think has a lot to do with Rain, who is the most optimistic, enthusiastic, and hopeful of the crew. She and Beckett, who is much more abrasive and hardened, balance each other nicely.
Star Bringer is the kind of book where you become completely invested in the characters, the story, the world, and more. I was so engrossed in the story that I gave up sleep to finish it. I couldn’t put the book down until I found out what happened to the characters, whether they found the person they were looking for, if they discovered who was after them, and how they would resolve the dozens of other problems and conflicts that stood in their way. Plus, they’re facing the ever-looming eventuality of the sun destroying all of the planets in their system, and someone on the ship might be the only one who can save them. Add to that, the political unrest, rebellions, lies and manipulations, the fight for power and control, the oppressive nature of their world, alien intervention, and so much more. No pressure, though. lol
And, my word, what a great ending! Though it resolved some things, it also left me with so many more questions, but in the best possible way! Also, I think the story has just scratched the surface of what is happening in this system, and I’m eager to see how the group deals with all of the antagonists working against them, especially after that revelation at the end of the book. There are so many different groups targeting them, and their lives are always at risk, and they’re also aware that the situations they’re pulled into affect more than just them. Let me tell you, it is intense, and action-packed, and so shocking. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!

They have that grumpy/sunshine dynamic that always makes for a fun romance, and their high-stakes journey is a wild ride.
Kee is such a fantastic protagonist. She is so smart and a super talented hacker, and she is an enormous asset to her team, though she doesn’t realize it. She goes through a lot over the course of the story, and I like that she starts to see herself differently. Kee is a crier, but that doesn’t mean she’s weak. She feels deeply, and that isn’t a liability. I love that Kee starts to see that these qualities she always thought were faults are actually some of her best strengths.
Varro is the grumpy to Kee’s sunshine personality. Opposite to Kee in many ways. Varro rarely shows his emotions. He has a powerful ability that forces him to keep a tight leash on his feelings so that he doesn’t impose on other people’s will. Because of this, he is difficult to read, as Kee learns throughout the story.
Kee and Varro have a great romance. They have so much chemistry, and their feelings for each other are intense. I love the forced proximity scenes when the couple shares a very confined room. The tension is off the charts! Plus, the little ways that Varro shows Kee he cares are so sweet, and his nickname for her is lovely. Personally, I think everyone deserves a sexy alien who bakes delicious cookies. However, some of their conversations felt repetitive, and I wanted to shake Varro and make him explain things to Kee. They both struggle to communicate their feelings, and they rehash the same argument several times with little change, which is frustrating. That being said, their sexy scenes overall love story more than made up for it.
The story also has a ton of action, epic space adventure, and a lot of nail-biting intensity, which I loved. Set in a place that is tentatively at peace after decades of war, there is a lot at stake, and it’s clear that there are some who want to break the hard-fought truce. The Starlight crew is determined to help maintain peace and root out the people intent on destroying it. Espionage, kidnappings, daring and dangerous rescue missions, and more had me eagerly turning the pages to find out where Kee and Varro and the rest of the crew’s journey would lead. Speaking of the crew, I adore the Starlight members and the found family vibes. They are an amazing unit, and I love that we learn more about them and how they are meshing as a team.
Overall, I thought this was a great addition to the Starlight’s Shadow series, and I can’t wait to read the next book. There are several potential love stories that I would love to see, and I can’t get enough of the characters and intriguing space politics and intrigue. Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Voyager for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own....more
Hunt the Stars. is the first book in an exciting new series by Jesse Mahalik. The story is well-paced and immersive, there’s a ton of action, and the Hunt the Stars. is the first book in an exciting new series by Jesse Mahalik. The story is well-paced and immersive, there’s a ton of action, and the enemies-to-lovers romance is fantastic! I really admire Tavi as a leader. She is so strong and intelligent, and she always has the best interest of her crew at heart. Plus, she is sarcastic and funny! Tavi’s fiercely loyal and super determined, and her compassion knows no bounds. Torran is a great leader as well, and he and his crew, much like Tavi’s, seem more like a family than a team. I think it says a lot about Tavi and Torran’s characters that they have this core group that is so completely loyal to them.
The crews separately are well oiled machines, but I love them best when they are all together. Putting together two crews who fought on opposite sides of a devastating war has many challenges, yet this crew makes it work. Tavi can take a lot of credit for that, as she does specific things to encourage a sense of community and comradery. The two teams form such a unique and interesting connection together, and I think they learn so much through this deepening relationship. And speaking of the crew, I’m really curious to find out what happened between Lexi and Nilo. They have something simmering between them, and their chemistry is so palpable. Hopefully, they’ll be the focus of a future book in the series!
The love story in this book focused on Tavi and Torran, and they have a great enemies-to-lovers romance. They have an undeniable chemistry even though they begin as strangers from opposite sides of a war. Because Torran can actually invade others’ minds, there is a strong emphasis on consent, which I liked. This includes his romantic and professional relationship with Tavi. There is a definite sense of respect and knowing one’s boundaries.
The story has a lot of action and suspense, and the political and military intrigue adds to them. Lies, betrayals, manipulations, and more are unraveled, and the situation that Ravi, Torran, and the others find themselves in proves way more complicated and dangerous than they initially realized. It’s even more intriguing because Torran is revered in his military, and Tavi was formerly in the military but left for ethical reasons. Seeing both characters explore their feelings about the government, politics, the military, and everything that entails weigh heavily on both characters as the story progresses.
This is a great start to what promises to be an action-packed and suspenseful sci-fi romance series. The world-building is immersive, the dialogue is on point, the found family aspect is strong, and the romance is swoon-tastic! Oh, and there’s a super adorable pet too! I can’t wait to continue the series and am so grateful to Harper Voyager, Netgalley, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more

Fejo is a swoon-worthy hero, and I absolutely adored him. He yearns for acceptance and belonging, and beneath that overt, jaunty, confident, arrogant demeanor is a cinnamon roll! There are so many layers to his character, each one more intriguing and alluring than the one before. Most appealing are his feelings for Vanessa and the way he works to show her how deeply he cares throughout the story. It’s actually one of the things I like most about this series. The males are so dedicated to ensuring the happiness of their women, and the lengths they go to achieve this goal are positively swoon-worthy.
It took a bit longer for Vanessa to endear herself to me. Where Fejo is positive and bright, Vanessa is acerbic and angry. She hates being vulnerable, which makes it difficult for anyone to get close. Their relationship definitely has grumpy/sunshine vibes. However, the more you learn about Vanessa’s past and what she left behind, the more you relate to her. Plus, she’s a badass! She stands up for herself and those she loves, she puts herself at risk to protect others, and she is one of the most determined heroines in the series. I mean, this woman was abducted from Earth for nefarious purposes and was told she could never return to all that she knows. That’s a tough pill to swallow, especially when you leave things, and people, you love behind. Vanessa goes on such an emotional journey, as well as a physical journey, throughout the story, and it is interesting g to see how she reconciles her determination to return to earth with her new and ever-growing feelings toward Fejo.
Because of their pasts, both Fejo and Vanessa struggle with insecurities, feelings of unworthiness, and the desire to belong. Neither likes to be vulnerable, and they’ve both erected some pretty strong walls. I love how they find each other, though at much different paces. I think they see a bit of themselves in each other, though they hide their pain much differently. They have such a wonderful, angst-filled, obstacle-ridden romance, and I loved it!
Though the other books take place on Clecania, this story takes place primarily off-planet. The author’s skill at expanding this unique and immersive universe continues to impress me. New planets, species, customs, and spacecraft are explored and are so fascinating. Between the world-building, the heart-pounding action, the dangerous situations they find themselves in, the political intrigue, and a sexy romance, it is an immersive and exciting read.
It’s not often I see my first name in literature, so imagine my delight when I saw that one of the character’s names was Julie! All of my dreams have come true! I’ve said on my blog several times that I would love to be taken to Clecania and have a hot alpha male cater to my every wish. These males go to school to learn how to best take care of their mates in every way possible – cooking, cleaning, and so much more. What I would’ve given for one of these males during the COVID lockdowns. Lol. Now, I can live vicariously through Julie, and I’m hopeful that she has her own story in one of the future books in the series. Julie also has a sweet daughter who easily captures the hearts of everyone, and her interactions with Fejo and his crew are so endearing and adorable.
I thought this was a fantastic addition to the series, and I’m so thrilled to have received an advanced copy from the author. This is one of my favorite sci-fi romance series, and I feel like each book is as compelling, swoon-worthy, and immersive as its predecessor. I highly recommend the book and series to readers who enjoy stories with great world and character building, tons of excitement and action, and steamy love stories. ...more

The story follows Essmira, who is preparing to be sold as a pleasure female, and Raingar, the male who frees her. Essmira is such a likable character, and she goes through so much throughout the story. She is a strong woman and a survivor, and I love that she slowly learns her worth. Her story is difficult, and her past is abusive and traumatic. However, when she gets to Lemora, Essmira experiences freedom for the first time, and she finds a new life with a variety of possibilities. Since Essmira was trained to be a pleasure female, she has spent her entire life learning how to please others. She has never considered what would make her happy. On Lemora, Essmira finally has a chance to figure this out. However, as she adjusts to her new and unexpected reality and freedom, she also has to deal with the trauma of the past and her growing feelings for Raingar. I think her growth throughout the story is immense.
On a side note, I would recommend reading any content warnings before starting the book, as some of Essmira’s experiences could be potential triggers for some readers.
Raingar is a bit more difficult to love than Essmira. He is grouchy and ornery. Often impatient and negative, he is a bit of a curmudgeon. However, he is also very kind, protective, and loyal. The youngest of all clan leaders, Raingar is an honorable male who always looks out for the best interest of others, and he is well respected among his people. This male yells and gets frustrated a lot, but it’s obvious that he is confused by his feelings and desires, which he’s never felt before. I like how Raingar learns and changes as the story progresses. Essmira becomes the most important thing to him, and I love how he shows her how deeply his feelings are. If you like a grumpy, stubborn alpha hero, then this is the protagonist for you!
Essmira and Raingar have a slow-building love story with many bumps and bruises along the way. They struggle with their feelings, fears, inexperience, and more. Plus, it appears that Essmira’s life might be threatened, which adds more conflict to their story. I love how determined Raingar is to keep Essmira safe and how they slowly face their feelings for each other. I also love how much his feelings for Essmira rocks Raingar. He knows that she is his Xiveri mate, and the depth and strength of that bond are so powerful. It absolutely rocks Raingar’s world and changes him for the better.
I enjoyed a lot of the side characters in the story, especially the varied beings Essmira meets on Lemora. The female clan leaders who, along with Raingar, rescued and freed her, the beings who hired her, Raingar’s best friend, and others add so much to the story and show Essmira what it feels like to be supported, respected, and cared for.
I also liked the setting. Lemora is an accepting and inclusive planet, and the inhabitants are so welcoming and trustworthy. They embrace Essmira as one of their own, much like they do everyone who lives there. The author does a great job of creating a unique and admirable society in which everyone is accepted no matter their differences.
Like the other books in the series, Taken to Lemora is a standalone and can easily be read without reading the other five books in the series. However, several of the characters from the other book do make appearances in this book, much to my delight! I always love seeing what beloved characters are up to, and they are woven so well into this story. I can’t wait to see what kind of adventure Elizabeth Stephens will take me on next and am so thankful for the copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more

It’s so gorgeous, and I was drawn to the unique-sounding story. It’s not your typical alien romance. This story includes disappearances, aliens, conspiracies, and decades-old mysteries full of intrigue and danger. The plot is pretty unique, and I like how the author wove several seemingly unrelated stories together. The story went in a few directions that I didn’t expect, and the connections are tied together well. It made for an enjoyable read.
Each chapter begins with a song title from a playlist Cassidy’s mother made for her, which is another intriguing element of the story. Are these possible clues left by her mother, or are they something else? The story also includes snippets of news articles, memos, reports, and more throughout the book. These, as well as the song titles, offer insight into the several mysteries in the story. It’s interesting to see how everything ties together and how information that seemed unrelated or unimportant became significant as the story unfolded.
The characters are also interesting, though I wish some were a little more layered. Cassidy’s friends and aunt and Hayden’s family are so interesting, and I could easily see some of them being the focus of future books by the author. Cassidy is a great protagonist. She is resilient and determined, and she shows such courage throughout the story. I like that she trusts her instincts and never gives up on the people she loves. She’s also really intelligent, curious, and accepting.
The love story in this book is sweet and complicated. Cassidy and Hayden have a great connection, and I love how behind his athleticism and unbelievable good looks, Hayden is awkward and a bit bumbling with Cassidy. You can tell how taken he is with her, which is very sweet. Cassidy feels the same way, and their growing relationship, though complex and riddled with problems, is great.
Secrets, lies, betrayal, conspiracies, abductions, and more make for a suspenseful and entertaining read. Part sci-fi, part mystery, the intrigue definitely propels the plot. I became easily engrossed in the story and didn’t anticipate many of the surprising twists and turns. It’s an interesting and enjoyable read that will appeal to readers of ya sci-fi romance. Thanks so much to Entangled Teen, NetGalley, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more

Alex was separated from Lily in the last book, and Auzed is Theo’s straight-laced and serious brother. When Auzed rescues Alex while in Sauvenian territory, Alex lies and says that they are engaged in order to avoid their mating customs. This impulsive declaration leads to many complications as well as the beginning of a possible love affair between Auzed and Alex. Can the pair resist their feelings? Will they stay together even if they aren’t fated mates?
I love Alex! She is spunky and funny, and she makes the best movie references. She’s impulsive and quite funny, and I love how outgoing and demonstrative she is. Auzed is a solid, structured, serious, and responsible soldier. He is so used to being in control, and his life has spiraled into chaos since he first met Alex. Fierce and stern and responsible, he is shaken by the turbulent feelings Alex arouses. He and Alex are well-layered protagonists that each deal with internal conflicts. I found this part of the story really interesting. Alex has people on Earth that she loves and misses, and throughout the story she talks about her grief and the pain she feels at never seeing them again. She is very torn between wanting to return home and wanting to stay in this new world with a male who feels more like her home than Earth.
Auzed brings to light some aspects of his world that are interesting as well. Most people on the planet resign themselves to the fact that they will never find a mate. However, Clecanians who choose to remain monogamous to one partner are scorned. This is something that Auzed must think about as he considers his deep feelings for Alex. What would happen if, for example, they committed to each other and then Alex found her mate? Can they both deal with the scorn and rejection that comes with staying with one person? These unique social issues are explored throughout the story and offer an interesting perspective into the lives of the Clecanians.
Now, I love a swoon-worthy love story, and the romance between Alex and Auzed is sizzling! They are opposites in many ways, but they are also very similar, and they are so attracted to each other. I love how their relationship grows and develops throughout the story and how their fake engagement turns into something more. Their chemistry is off the charts – like sit in front of a fan when you read this off the charts! On top of that, their banter is fantastic. I love how Alex teases Auzed and gets him to let his guard down.
I know I’ve said this in my reviews of the previous books in the series, but the world-building is so strong that it’s worth repeating. Aveline creates such vivid and immersive worlds, which only continue to expand as the series progresses. This story takes place in Sauven, a different area of the planet than the other books, and it is fascinating. The author has created new worlds, cultures, social events and conflicts, unique clothing, animals, and modes of transportation. Clecania is so thoughtfully, accessibly, and vividly presented, and the imagery is excellent.
I’m loving this series, and I think this one is my favorite book yet. The characters are compelling, the world-building is unique and immersive, and the romance is amazing! I highly recommend the book (and the entire series) to readers who enjoy steamy sci-fi romance and am so thankful to Victoria Aveline for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more

Suspenseful, unpredictable, and engrossing, the story pulls yAfter Darkness III is the final book in the After Darkness trilogy, and it is fantastic! Suspenseful, unpredictable, and engrossing, the story pulls you in from the very first lines. The story switches to different characters’ perspectives, which works really well. The character development and storylines are so strong that you become invested in all of their journeys, so, when the perspectives change, it is not abrupt or unwelcome. Instead, it heightens the suspense and intrigue. The various perspectives also give you an in-depth view of what is happening in different parts of their world since the major characters are often not together.
Like the other books in the trilogy, the dystopian elements are strong, and I love how the author twined typically fantasy elements into the story. The author’s writing creates a vivid setting and group of characters, and I easily imagined the dark and gritty world where no one is safe. From the cities to the stark countryside and beyond, each setting is as vivid as the one before.
It’s such a unique world of cyborgs, humans, and immortals, and yet many of the themes and messages reflect our society. It’s fascinating to see these parallels between our world and the world Johns created. Themes of resisting tyranny and fighting for people and causes you believe in are strong in this book, as are the messages about family, freedom, and love. Scarlett, Camille, Malcolm, Eric, Kalem, Terra, and the others in their tight-knit group are a wonderful and loyal family. They fiercely defend and protect each other, and they fight together for what they believe in.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the romance. I love a good love story, and this book has several, some established and some new. The established couples have gone through so much and continue to in this book. However, they never give up on each other or their love. There are several swoon-worthy love stories to adore, and I love how fiercely dedicated these couples are. Scarlett and Eric, as well as Kalem and Terra, have such strong connections, and their love is plain to see. There is no question of their feelings and the fact that they belong together. They just have to figure out how to make it happen amid all the chaos and danger and threats.
Kalem really struggles in this story, especially after what happened to him at the end of the last book, and I was so hopeful that he would be able to find a way to defeat the Destroyer. His scenes were so intense and scary, and his life always felt in the balance, which terrified me as he is one of my faves! His story, much like the other major characters, is unpredictable, engrossing, and riddled with danger.
There is so much action and intrigue in the story. Daring prison escapes epic battles, dangerous journeys, revolution, and more create a nail-biting read. I think it’s even more suspenseful because you become so invested in the characters and so want them to find freedom and happiness. Of course, with immortal and deadly antagonists, as well as a fierce and powerful army against them, it seems improbable.
I absolutely loved this book! It’s an epic conclusion to a brilliant series. It has one of the most satisfying endings I’ve read in a long time, and though I’m writing this review several days after finishing the book, I got a little choked up thinking about the characters and their journeys. I’m so thankful to J.F. Johns for sending me a copy of the book, and I highly recommend it to readers of YA dystopia/fantasy/romance/sci-fi.
I was so excited when J.F. Johns offered me a copy of After Darkness II, the second book in the After Darkness series. If you read my review of the fiI was so excited when J.F. Johns offered me a copy of After Darkness II, the second book in the After Darkness series. If you read my review of the first book, you know that I fell in love with the characters, the dystopian world, the intriguing plot, the romance, the supernatural elements, and more. After Darkness II expands on these fantastic elements and left me eager for the third book in the series!
J.F. Johns has created such a unique and fascinating world, which quickly immerses the reader into the story. In a dystopian world where cyborgs, humans, and others live under the oppression of a controlling government, nothing is as it seems. The story is told from several characters’ perspectives, which offers an in-depth view of the thoughts and feelings of them all. It also shows events that happen simultaneously and how each contributes to and affects the others.
The characters are layered and dynamic, and I can’t get enough of them! Scarlet and Eric are relationship goals, and I adore their love story! Eric is so charming and funny, though he often uses his humor to deflect from his true feelings. He, like Kalem, will do anything to help the woman he loves, and I loved the way their relationship progressed. Scarlet is lost to the monster inside of her, but Eric never stops fighting to bring her back, nor does Scarlet. She has some amazing gifts, as do many of the other characters in the novel, and the way she uses them to save herself and her friends is amazing.
Kalem’s parents, the twins, and several other characters have important roles in the story, and I enjoyed their character arcs, as well. Kalem and Terra have an amazing found family full of dynamic, caring, and loyal individuals who will do anything for each other, which is good because the government and its leaders threaten their lives at every turn.
The relationship between Kalem and Terra is one of deep and unconditional love. Their love and connection are tested so much in this story. When Terra struggles with her memories, she is still drawn to Kalem. When she is confronted with unfathomable pain and possible death, Kalem can do nothing but try to help her. The depth of their feelings and the strength of their love continues to grow regardless of the obstacles that continually stand in their way.
Petra’s evilness continues in this story, and her maliciousness knows no bounds. She is disturbing and disturbed, and her desire for power and revenge has irrevocably corrupted her. It’s interesting to see how Terra, Kalem, Scarlett, and the others work to figure out how to defeat Petra when she is virtually undefeatable.
Scarlet’s siblings are all fascinating as well, and I loved their roles in the story. They, like Scarlet, are immortal and have superhuman abilities, which are really cool. The powers also really helpful in fighting Petra, as she is also immortal and has some pretty scary powers herself. I’m eager to see more of the siblings and to learn more about them in future books and feel like they, with Scarlet and the rest of her found family, may be the key to changing the oppressive nature of this dystopian society.
As much as I love the amazing and well-developed characters, the plot is equally intriguing. This is such a layered and carefully constructed story filled with suspenseful action scenes, dramatic revelations, disturbing and malicious mysteries, and more. It kept me on the edge of my seat, excited (and a little afraid) to find out what happened next. I love how the author writes and how elements of the story that seem irrelevant become super significant.
The unpredictability, the unique story-line, the amazing characters, and, of course, the romance make for a gripping and immersive read. The story also touches on issues like PTSD, abuse, and death. Some of these scenes are intense, but the characters’ determination, survival instincts, and commitment to each other fuels them. I enjoyed the strong messages of hope, perseverance, fighting for what (and who) you believe in, and love. I’m so thankful for my copy of the book, and I can’t wait to read the next one!!!...more

Transportation, homes, shopping excursions, and even spas are introduced, as is the wilderness. The wilds that Lily and Verakko travel through are detailed and interesting and build upon the descriptions in Freeing Luka, the second book in the series. I love the rich descriptions and the ever-growing universe that Aveline has created and appreciate the detail that goes into creating such a fascinating setting.
I also love how many strong and powerful women are in this story. Lily, Verakko’s mother, and other females are portrayed as equals and superiors to the males. I love that women are held in high regard and are respected for their intellect, ambition, and strength, and I feel like this is something that Aveline highlights in all of her books. Lily is an excellent example of this.
A while back, I asked Victoria Aveline who she would want to be stranded with if she were ever stuck on desert island. She chose Lily, and I can see why. Lily is tough and smart, a survivor who keeps a cool head under the most stressful circumstances. She’s also independent and quick-thinking, which helps her on more than one occasion. Lily learned a lot about surviving from her unique upbringing with survivalist parents. This life-long knowledge contributes to her resilience, patience, and adaptability, as well as her determination to survive and thrive.
Verakko’s character is also quite interesting. He is super tech-savvy, intelligent, kind, and supportive. He is a hunk with a gruff and arrogant exterior, but he is so wonderful underneath that bravado. He is an honorable male who is curious, sensitive, and interested in the well being of others. His efforts to help the captives like Lily are beyond heroic, as are his actions when traveling with Lily.
The romance between Verakko and Lily is absolutely swoon-worthy! They have fantastic chemistry, and even though they are quite different, they complement each other well. They also challenge each other, which I love! They are fated mates (one of my favorite tropes!), and being from different planets and not understanding each other’s cultures, backgrounds, and societal expectations prove problematic for this couple. It’s interesting to see how they work through their obstacles. I also love that, even though Verakko is native to the world and is a dominant alpha-male who saves Lily on more than one occasion, Lily also saves Verakko. They are a well-matched pair!
Saving Verakko is a great addition to the series and is filled with action, suspense, conflict, and a wonderful (and steamy) romance. The dynamic characters, vivid setting, and plot that extends throughout the series make for a captivating read. Thanks so much to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more

A steamy, erotic novel, the story follows Melody, a virgin who enters the game to get money for her family. Damon is an alien prince who enters the game seeking revenge on another male participant and falls in love with Melody. Melody knows that the more sex and orgasms she has, the more money she wins. However, will her feelings for Damon stop her from winning the game? Other obstacles and contestant impede Melody and Damon’s success, and they must work together to survive the Virgin Hunt Games.
The instant connection between Melody and Damon is steamy, as are their intimate scenes. The kinkier the sex, the more points Melody receives in the game, and she is pretty willing to do whatever she must to win the game and get money to her family. Damon is intent on revenge and isn’t prepared for the instant-love he feels for Melody.
I liked the setting of the games, which is a multi-level structure with different themes, obstacles, and dangers on each floor. The contestants must survive (and have as much sex as possible) for the seven-day game, and each day is filled with non-stop threats. The animals, contestants, and setting are unique and vividly described. I did wish there were a bit more development in terms of the plot and character, especially in regards to Damon, Melody, and the friends they make in the games. That being said, it is a creative and quick read with a lot of action, good imagery, and vivid sex scenes.
I think people who enjoy erotic sci-fi romance with a variety of characters and some spicy sex scenes will enjoy this story. However, abuse, potential sexual assault, sexual threats, manipulation, and violence might trigger some readers. Thanks to Entangled: Scorched and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Stephens continues the Xiveri Mates series with an action-packed, heart-pounding, space pirate romance, and it is epic! Prior to the start of the storStephens continues the Xiveri Mates series with an action-packed, heart-pounding, space pirate romance, and it is epic! Prior to the start of the story, Deena has spent years held in captivity by her grandmother after finding out that her grandmother betrayed their colony. Deena’s only communication with the outside world is with Rhork, a space pirate she talks to via a communication token. Deena manages to escape and, at the start of Taken to Kor, arrives at a human satellite, excited to meet other humans and start over away from her nefarious grandmother. However, things are not as she expected, and Deena’s life is quickly endangered, and Rhork is the only one who can help her.
Deena can’t trust Rhork. He is a pirate, and his customs are deplorable to Deena. However, the male she talked to for the years of her captivity and the one who saves her is so different from his reputation. Rhork knows he wants Deena and that she is the perfect mate for him. He just has to convince her that becoming his mate and a pirate is where she belongs.
This is my favorite book in the Xiveri Mates series. It is fast-paced and action-packed, and I adored the characters and the romance! The book starts with a sense of foreboding as Deena enters the seemingly abandoned human satellite. Where there should be humans prospering, Deena finds something horrifying. Rhork and his crew show how ruthless and heroic they can be, coming to Deena’s rescue when she needs them the most.
I love Rhork’s crew and the way that they embrace Deena as one of their own. Though they are ruthless, they are also more honorable than I expected, especially after hearing about them in earlier books. Deena finds a family in Rhork and his crew and a home on Rhork’s ship. This band of pirates is nothing like Deena expected, and it is with them that she finally feels a sense of belonging. This devoted found family of pirates is one of my favorite parts of the story.
Deena struggles with self-esteem and has a low opinion of her self-worth. Because of this, she has a hard time believing that Rhork cares for her. She sees herself as less than, and the wounds of her past, as well as something hurtful Rhork said to protect her, has severely affected her feelings of worth. At the start of the story, she’s sensitive about her physical appearance and feels unworthy of love. However, as the story progresses, Deena changes. She becomes more confident and sure of herself, and her self-consciousness fades.
Rhork is a swoon-worthy hero, and the love story between him and Deena is fantastic! He is so in love with Deena and sees her for the strong, smart, and beautiful person that she is. I think he has a lot to do with Deena’s healing, as he loves, protects, and defends her more than anyone ever has. Of course, miscommunication, jealousy, attempted kidnappings, space battles, and more stand in their way, but that just makes their love story all the more wonderful and intense. They seem to bring out the best in each other, and their chemistry is amazing.
Though this, like all of the books in the Xiveri Mates series, is a standalone, I would recommend reading Taken to Heimo, the fourth book in the series, if you want more context about Deena and Rhork. It provides the background about Deena and her grandmother and how Deena escaped, and it gives you a look at Rhork and his crew from a different perspective.
Some of the characters from the first four stories in the series make appearances in this book, which I also loved. It is interesting to see what the characters are doing and how their lives, relationships, and goals have progressed. I also like how all of their stories, though separate, intertwine. The couples from all of the books in the series want a different future, and they have created the changes necessary to bring their dreams to fruition. It’s fascinating to see how their work, and their relationships, have developed.
Stephens’ created a vast, immersive with unique worlds, customs, and beings, and I’m always amazed at the vividness and clarity of her descriptions. It’s so easy to imagine, yet so different from anything I’ve ever read. On top of that, the plot is intricately developed. Plots and sub-plots are gripping, exciting, and unpredictable. I’m excited to read the next book in the series and am so thankful to Elizabeth Stephens for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more
Elizabeth Stephens blew my mind again with a steamy and immersive sci-fi romance that I couldn’t put down. I love her Xiveri Mates series, and Taken tElizabeth Stephens blew my mind again with a steamy and immersive sci-fi romance that I couldn’t put down. I love her Xiveri Mates series, and Taken to Sasor is no exception. The story follows Mian and Neheyuu, a life-long slave and a snake-shifting clan leader who find themselves questioning everything they believe in the name of love.
Mian is an incredibly brave woman. A slave her entire life, she bravely offers herself to save fellow slaves when a raiding party invades their village. Neheyuu, the leader of the raiding party and chief of his clan, takes her, allowing the other slaves to remain hidden. His manerak feels an instant connection to the fierce and brave slave. However, Neheyuu is conflicted. His desire to grow his clan and gain power among the other clans comes with certain expectations, and these expectations don’t leave room for his feelings for Mian. Mian, in turn, struggles with her desire for Neheyuu and her desire for safety and security with a kind partner, something Neheyuu cannot guarantee.
The story is told from both Mian and Neheyuu’s points of view. I like the use of dual narration and feel it adds to the character development. You get to understand Mian’s conflicting feelings and how she acclimates to this new and different world. Neheyuu is just as interesting since he is constantly battling his manerak almost to the brink of insanity.
In one of my previous reviews, I wrote about Stephens’ skill in creating a vivid and immersive universe. She continues this in Taken to Sasor, presenting not just a new world, but new cultures, traditions, and languages. As Mian learns the language, the reader does as well. Now, I can say things like, “yes,” “no problem,” and “f*ck of,” which I think is really sviking cool!
Something else I really liked about the book is the tremendous growth displayed by so many of the characters, especially Neheyuu and Mian. Neheyuu shows an incredible amount of growth and development as he struggles with his growing feelings for Mian, his sense of duty to his people, and his desire to lead and gain power. As the youngest clan leader, Neheyuu has a lot to prove. However, he acts rashly and doesn’t always think things through, which causes even more conflict. He also fights his feelings out of a sense of duty. Neheyuu has a lot to learn about being a leader and being true to himself before he can be a good partner to Mian, and his personal journey is fascinating.
Mian grows as well. She is a woman who suffered abuse and maltreatment as a slave for years. She is smart, kind, and curious, but she struggles with self-worth. Mian often considers herself unworthy of friendship, love, and affection even though she longs for security, safety, and a kind partner. As she becomes more ingratiated and accepted in Neheyuu’s tribe, she learns what it feels like to be part of a community and to be respected and cared for. Chimara, who is half-human, is one of the few who can easily communicate with Mian. The females develop a lovely friendship and support each other throughout the book, and I think Chimara contributes to Mian’s sense of worth. Of course, her growing feelings for Neheyuu and their powerful bond contributes to her growth the most. As the story progresses, Mian becomes more confident and self-assured, which is fantastic to see.
Finally, I have to talk about the super-steamy romance! The chemistry between Mian and Neheyuu is on fire! Attraction is certainly not their problem. Mian and Neheyuu are drawn to each other, and their connection is profound. Past experiences, social expectations and implications, and fear are Mian and Neheyuu’s biggest obstacles. Plus, there is an outside force that threatens their happiness and future as well.
A richly developed and steamy sci-fi romance, Taken to Sasor is a fabulous addition to the Xiveri Mates series. Even though it’s the third book in the series, it can totally be read as a standalone. However, I recommend you read the entire series because each story is amazing! Thanks so much to Elizabeth Stephens for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more
Taken to Heimo is the fourth book in the Xiveri mates series, and it focuses on Krisxox and Svera’s relationship. Yay! I’ve wanted to read Krisxox andTaken to Heimo is the fourth book in the Xiveri mates series, and it focuses on Krisxox and Svera’s relationship. Yay! I’ve wanted to read Krisxox and Svera’s story since we met them both in Taken to Voraxia. They have had a love-hate relationship throughout the series, and I was so excited to learn the causes of their tension. Prejudice, fear, disgust, religion, pirates, jealousy, vengeance, greed, and more contribute to their heart-stopping journey towards a happily-ever-after.
Krisxox and Svera are very different, and they face many obstacles, both internal and external. Krisxox is a male of action. He’s not one for flowery professions, but his actions show the depth of his feelings. However, Krisxox struggles with his prejudice toward humans for much of the story. He had to unlearn a lot of the beliefs of his sires before he could truly embrace his feelings for Svera. He, like Svera, fights his feelings and the idea that they are fated mates.
"I need to be careful. I don’t need her knowing that I spend each lunar in her room. I don’t need her knowing that I dream of her. That failing her gives me nightmares."
Svera is kind and gentle and intelligent. Her gentle and giving nature shouldn’t be mistaken for passivity because Svera is fierce and strong and full of sass when the situation calls for it. She also is very devout and close to her family, which is why she resists the pull of her fated mate. It’s interesting to see how Svera and Krisxox deal with their internal conflicts.
The romance between Svera and Krisxox is tense and explosive! There is a tremendous amount of build-up, as they both try so hard to resist their feelings. This makes their eventual union passion-filled swoon-taticness!! I so rooted for this couple. They are so different, yet so similar. They both love deeply and have a strong sense of duty and loyalty. They are both fierce and wonderful and flawed, and their feelings for each other, whether good or bad, are palpable.
"In those treacherous imaginings, I want to be her whole entire xoking galaxy because she’s already mine. She’s already ruined me."
I’m really interested in the pirates and some of the other new species introduced in the story. At one point in the story, Krisxox and Svera are thrown into a gladiator-type battle, and they encounter many new alien species and characters. I love how Stephens continues to expand the world and am curious if they will play a role in future books in the series.
I also like that characters from the previous books make appearances in this book. It’s always great to see what’s happening in the lives of the other couples, and Stephens ties their stories into Krisxox and Svera’s story well. The over-arching plot that began in Taken to Voraxia is also well-developed, well-layered, and full of surprising twists and turns.
Overall, I really enjoyed this addition to the Xiveri Mates, and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series. I enjoy stories that entertain and offer a level of poignancy, and Stephens’ stories do just that. Plus, the romances are always amazing, and I’m learning to speak an alien language! Thanks so much to Elizabeth Stephens for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review....more
