The first thirdI am not accustomed to reading thrillers so I'm not sure if it is part of the genre to not really care what happens to the characters. The first third of this book was generally uninteresting but the pace and intrigue did pick up after a while. The alternating chapters of he said, she said did work well and the writing and story telling were good, which is why I gave this 3 stars. Previous to reading "Gone Girl" I read in reviews that the plot had some unexpected twists and turns and it did deliver on that front. I did not feel invested in the characters and story beyond wanting to know how it all worked out. I wanted to know without having to plod through the psyches of these really f*ed up people. I can appreciate how clever the story was at times but I was largely underwhelmed. Perhaps the kinds of stories and people Flynn depict aren't for me, because lots of other people loved this book. I don't watch reality, sensationalistic TV or newsy shows that focus on true crime and the worst of our human behavior and this felt like prolonged exposure to just that, 400 pages worth, which was too much for me. I will say that I liked the character of Nick's sister, Margo or Go as he called her. She was sarcastic, down to earth and gave me someone to rely on that had the same sorts of reactions I did. She provided a somewhat sane anchor in the midsts of the insanity. ...more

The story itself got more interesting as the story moved along and, for me, was quite confusing in the beginning. Part of the delight with this book were the surprises and twists in plot that were revealed towards the middle and end of the book. The story grabbed me enough to want to read the sequel....more

The arguments for both sides of the subject are realistic and fall into that gray area. There are clearly "bad guys" in this story, but there's a lot in between. The technical information that he sometimes goes into in detail truthfully sometimes went over my head but was still fascinating. This should be required reading for every high school senior. Just saying....more

It's much denser than the spaciousness of Queen & Country. Now that I have read it I can see that it certainly is worth the read. Complex characters and social and political commentary made this very engrossing. ...more

The artists have been different for each volume and the change was so drastic that it seems like a different person. The writing and story are still good, but the sexed up version of Tara was just too distracting for me -- in a bad way....more
