Well, that's not entirely true. There are a few other aspects that would have aided to my three star review. But trust me when I say, that was a huge turning point for me.
I'm a huge fan of the enemies to lovers trope. Seriously, huge. Add fake dating on top of that? Call me stereotypical, but I'm in contemporary heaven. Unfortunately, 10 Things I Hate About Pinky didn't quite live up to my expectations.
The romance happened way too fast for me. Yes, there was a long period where they hated each other, but there was none of that will-they won't-they, none of the JUST DO IT ALREADY that I yearn for in books like these. It was hinted at and established wayyy too quickly that Pinky and Samir liked each other. Otherwise, I found it fairly cute, if a bit cringe-worthy. Pinky getting weak over Samir being an "alpha male" made me literally grimace (and fall over laughing, but that's beside the point). Petition to stop using that term, please?
Another thing I found annoying was that we all knew what was going to happen, why they were going to break up. There was absolutely no shock value or emotion attached to it at all. (view spoiler)[Samir's list was made, then never mentioned again until the big fight- and yet, it was obvious this was going to be what drove them apart because it's literally in the title. To me, it came across as if Menon just wanted to write the romance, but needed something to write about to a) strengthen the fact that they were originally enemies and b) cause a breakup. She chose the list, chucked it in, and then absorbed herself in writing the romance until she absolutely had to bring it up again. Not a fan. (hide spoiler)]
The other plot points in this book (Pinky and Samir's journeys of self-discovery, Pinky's relationship with her parents, Dolly's sideplot, the Butterfly Habitat) were fine. Nothing special, but certainly not bad.
I will never be the biggest fan of Menon's writing style, but nonetheless she never fails to deliver cute, fun contemporaries. Here's to the next!
Recommended to any fans of enemies to lovers.
By the way, Menon, it's okay to write Pinky as a strong-ass woman who doesn't tremble over a dominant man. You really didn't have to put that bit in there.
