I’ve been putting this off because as a huge fan of both I felt like it couldn’t possibly be as good as I wanted but in fact it is SO MUCH BETTER! The whole thing is in iambic pantameter. There are Star Wars and Shakespearean Easter eggs throughout. What an excellent and amazing book. Absolutely fantastic. 5 stars. ...more

Should be mandatory reading for all hearing people. I’ve never seen an episode of americas next top model or dancing with the stars, and quite frankly I don’t care to, but this is a memoir worth reading even if you don’t know who the author is already. As a queer memoir and a history of the entire Deaf community, this is just such an important and wonderful book. I highly recommend this for absolutely everyone. Beautiful and authentic. 4.8 stars....more

I’ll be honest that I don’t know who the guy is and haven’t seen any shows he was on but this is hitting so close to home because this story is so familiar to me as I’m sure it is to many others. I had to stop in the middle of chapter 2 because I was crying so much. This is a beautiful and powerful and heart wrenching book. Read with caution if you have ever had any type of personal experience with pregnancy loss or something similar. This is a magnificent story that needs to be told because it isn’t being told. This book is powerful, heart-wrenching, gut-punching, and overwhelming. I loved it. That being said, there are probably some people who won’t be able to handle it, so I urge caution if you are close to the subject.
I saw some reviews saying there’s an anti-adoption sentiment and that’s just not true. There are plenty of happy and wonderful adoptions and nobody is trying to take that away, but these specific women didn’t want to give up their children, they were forced to. They’re not saying adoption is bad they’re saying it requires informed consent from the birth parent, which is the law now and I don’t think that’s an anti-adoption stance at all. Downsides: a lot of the stories are very similar so it feels repetitive. Most of the stories seem to be about middle class white women, but I wonder if that’s just another sociological consequence of how the country was functioning at the time and who was willing to be interviewed for the book. ...more
