For my future reference: Rule 1: you must make peace with reality Rule 2: you need a container (and it cannot be inside your brain) Rule 3: you need a system that works Rule 4: strive for less (stuff, distraction, and overwhelm)...more

And then after reading the introduction I wanted to cry, because I'm used to things directed at parents being insulting and aggravating towards anyone who is actually autistic, but this book is great. It's clear the author truly respects the kids he's worked with and makes a genuine effort to understand things from their point of view rather than simply dismissing them as unmanageable and insensible. Some of the advice doesn't really apply to me since it is written for parents, but feeling understood by proxy was really nice, and there are definitely a few strategies I'm hoping to use to make my own life easier....more

The repeated references the author makes to self-control around food were mostly cutesy and annoying until she finally explained near the end of the book that actually dieting and fat shaming are ineffective, so I guess a content warning for others who are sensitive to that stuff. I learned a lot of useful things about my own willpower struggles and have saved many of the exercises to try. ...more

It's a nice little book that lays out a broad outline of ways to ameliorate debt. Some of them may be 'common sense' but sometimes you need it all organized. It's mathematically obvious that paying half of bills every two weeks pays more per year than paying fully monthly, but it's not something I would have thought of on my own, for example. ...more

First lengthy ebook I've read on my phone, and it was a great experience. I hate highlighting print books, but I made heavy use of iBooks' highlighter for particularly profound passages. Since I've listened to the podcast for years, I read the book in Stever's voice which made it even better. The mix of material I had already heard on the podcast with things that were new to me was good. I expect I will use plenty of his tips in whole or in part. Can't hurt to try it and see what works for me. ...more

Only giving it a 4 for now because I haven't yet tried any of the tips in the book, but at least on an initial read-through it seems fairly intuitive and helpful. It's definitely an easy read, and has some good heuristics for reducing "stuff" to "things I need" and ditching the stuff that's not on that list, which I definitely need help with. Combined with things like Getting Things Done, The Now Habit, and [ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life:], it appears to have a good program for getting rid of clutter and welcoming serenity....more

I originally encountered the GTD concept on 43folders.com (where else) and thought it looked interesting, but that website is not designed to actually teach you the method, but instead builds on it at times, gives you little tools that help you implement it, or makes forays into other areas of organization and productivity. The little summaries provided were a great teaser, and I tried to set up a system based on that, but I never really grasped the concept enough to feel comfortable with it.
My recommendation is if you've heard about the system, or seen a breakdown or summary somewhere, do read the book. Once you've read the book you'll probably think to yourself "Well, that's obvious! Why did it take 250 pages to explain that?" But the breakdowns, lists, summaries, and charts are really symbols of the system: if you don't know what information the symbol is representing and accessing, using the symbol alone isn't going to do you much good.
At least, that has been my experience. Others may have more luck just jumping in....more

It can feel a little repetitive after awhile as the author restates, refines, and gives examples for the main points of the book. But it can give some good clues into family dynamics and how conversations styles are an often overlooked aspect of relationships....more
