The story combines themes of war, love, forgiveness, loyalty, and honor, all set against a rich historical backdrop.
A.L. Sowards, the author, is known for her deep and accurate historical research and her ability to craft captivating historical fiction. In recent years, Sowards has explored periods of history that were unfamiliar to me.
Set in the Balkans in 1373, the novel follows Konstantin, a vassal to the Ottoman Sultan, who has conquered Serbia with his powerful army. As a young Zupan, Konstantin inherits a struggling Zupa and aims for financial stability. His grandfather arranges a marriage to Suzana, who brings a significant dowry but also carries the scars of a trauma-filled childhood.
I especially loved the development of Konstantin and Suzana's relationship. Suzana battled with trust issues stemming from her history of abuse, especially from her father. Konstantin was a supportive husband and gradually guided her out of the shadows of her past. Her path to healing was the favorite part of the story for me. The writing flows so smoothly that the shifts in POV feel seamless. There is also a good twist in the story that you won't see coming.
Amid battle scenes, relationship struggles, and community conflicts, a tender romance grows. I look forward to reading the second book, as Beneath a Crescent Shadow has made a lasting impression on me. This story will stay with me for a long time.

Bearly Evident is not just a foul-play mystery; surprisingly, it also has a good dose of humor.
The story features Kristy Farrell, a reporter for Animal Advocate Magazine, who is at the Happy Place Animal Sanctuary to write an article when a body is discovered. Kristy switches into detective mode to uncover who is behind the crime. Her approach to questioning people is quite amusing. At one point, she has five or six suspects on her list. Chaos ensues at the sanctuary with animals escaping and shady characters lurking around. Kristy gathered so much information about each suspect that I was left completely confused about who was causing all the trouble. There's also a subplot involving a pyramid scheme tied to Kristy's mom's friend, and I loved how that storyline wrapped up.
I admired Kristy's bravery and determination as she tackled both mysteries. This is the fourth book in the series, but I’m definitely going to read the first three because I truly enjoyed the author's creative storytelling. Lois Schmitt crafts fantastic characters who have unique voices and relatable flaws.
Bearly Evident works well as a standalone novel. If you’re a fan of intriguing mysteries, interesting characters, and a book that's hard to put down, you’ll really enjoy this one.

I was thrilled to discover that the story revolves around Verity Travers, a character I adored in the first book, "A Heart Worth Stealing." From the very first page, this book grabbed my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s packed with tension, mystery, and witty exchanges, along with plenty of action and suspense. I honestly didn't see any of the twists coming, as the mystery was so skillfully crafted that it had me guessing throughout.
Verity is a lovable character with her cleverness and independent spirit, and Nathaniel, the charming Bow Street Runner, is equally captivating. His chivalrous nature earns him the nickname "Sir Chivalry." Their romance unfolds as a rivals-to-lovers story, with sweet moments and strong chemistry perfectly woven into the mystery and crime elements of the plot. They truly make a great team and balance each other out wonderfully.
You can read this book on its own, but I highly recommend starting with "A Heart Worth Stealing", where readers fall in love with Verity's brother Jack and Ginny's story.
This book is definitely a must-read for fans of closed-door historical romance! It's an exciting page-turner that you won't want to miss....more

In "Accidental Courtship with the Earl," readers meet even more quirky main characters. Lady Helen finally gets her moment in the spotlight as she matures and prepares to take on the world. We’ve followed her older siblings in earlier books, and they make appearances here as well.
Mark, the Earl of Inverness, has returned from the war with a wounded spirit and missing a leg. He struggles with his scars, both physical and mental, and is convinced that no woman from high society would ever want him.
When Helen and Mark cross paths in a light-hearted moment, Lady Helen climbs over a fence to rescue her bird, capturing Mark’s attention—he thinks she looks like a Fairy Queen. Their shared struggles create a unique bond from the start. The humor shines as Helen navigates her unconventional escapades that challenge societal expectations for young women. She has a passion for snakes and nature, which she joyfully shares. While her family embraces her quirks, Mark feels alienated from his own family. As they spend more time together, their attraction deepens.
This novel focuses less on drama and more on the personal journeys of the characters. There are a few steamy moments, but nothing beyond that and the focus remains on the themes of hope and renewal throughout the story. Samantha Hastings has truly made the Stringham family one of my favorites....more

Each story is set in New Something Borrowed is a wonderful collection of historical romance novellas that take place during wartime on the homefront. Each story is set in New York City, that spans different eras.
The first tale, A Heart in Disguise by Rachel Scott McDaniel, occurs in 1918 amidst the backdrop of World War I. Allison Pittman's A Letter to Eli takes place in 1943 during World War II. The final novella, A Daffodil in the Dress by Susie Finkbeiner, is set in the Vietnam War in 1969. It would be hard to pick a favorite because I truly enjoyed them all.
The book's title is fitting, as each love story is connected by a beautiful and special wedding dress that conjoins the stories through time. It's delightful to see how each woman comes to acquire this dress, with each story offering a different but heartwarming journey of finding love during challenging times. The historical details bring these periods to life, adding such richness to each story.

Otis and Sadie are well-suited for one another, but it takes some time to reach a connection. Both characters face so many challenges in their lives, and through their friendship, they are made whole. One thing that stood out to me was the exchange of letters between Otis and Sadie. Many of these letters were written while they were in the same house, which displayed their personalities and helped readers to connect more fully with the characters.
This novel is rich in many emotions, some were sadness, joy, bitterness, shame, anxiety, and humility. It truly was an emotional journey. The individual and shared experiences of the couple are at the heart of this story. Readers who love heartfelt historical romances will find that in "Beyond Ivy Walls."...more

I enjoy thinking alongside River and Tony. Having read the earlier books, readers are already familiar with the characters. The series stands out because the main characters are former FBI behavioral analysts who have moved into private investigation. You definitely look at things differently through their eyes and experiences. The investigation into cold cases that April, a popular crime podcaster, was exploring before her kidnapping adds an interesting element to the story. There's also a continuing case where River's life is in harm's way.
While Cold Vengeance may not be filled with constant action, it explores the thoughts of two highly skilled private investigators. You are holding your breath when things do get intense.
The Christian theme is prevalent, highlighting their relationship with God, their faith, and River's remarkable journey toward forgiving her father. The romance between River and Tony remains endearing, and it was heartwarming to witness their bond deepen. While Cold Vengeance can stand on its own, I am grateful for having read the previous books, as it enriches the conclusion of both the book and the series. Cold Vengeance is among my favorite reads for 2024 thus far....more

What begins as a peaceful journey quickly turns tense when illegal poachers, supported by terrorists, invade their path. Earlier books in the series hint at past encounters with such threats.
Set in East Africa, the author Peter Riva paints a vivid picture of the landscape and introduces readers to native tribes, their customs, and social structures. The story beautifully captures the lives of animals, especially an elephant family, highlighting the dangers they face from the ivory trade. Mbuno, with his special bond with the elephants, stands out as an "elephant whisperer."
This thrilling tale not only entertains but also sends a strong message about the endangered status of these animals and the need to stop illegal activities. The plot skillfully blends educational elements about the country and its people, keeping readers engaged as the characters race against time to protect the elephant herd from poachers. On page one The Garden Girls starts with a bang and the fireworks never stop.
"Sharp claws scrape along my neck.

Zzzzt...zzzzzzz...zzt...
Buzzing fills the room, and I strain to open my eyes but they're like molasses, thick and sticky and slow-moving. My stomach jumps and the room shifts as my blurred vision registers red walls and coffee-colored concrete. I inhale a hint of bleach and incense with a spicy note as I shift to survey the rest of the room."
Writer Jessica R. Patch writes such beautiful prose amidst the danger and heavy creepiness factor. She is known for her signature twists, and twists you will get. With several missing young women, six or more possible suspects, and the crime unit always one step behind, there is much to digest and piece together in this thriller.
The story revolves around FBI Agent Tiberius Granger where his past and present collide. There are deeply hidden secrets that could turn the outcome of the case backward. The team races around the clock to locate and halt the serial killer, who hasn't stopped taunting Ty at every turn.
My reading experience was as follows: many moments to stop and process, not reading this at night, and of course, jumping up and down as new things came to light. This novel is gritty, intense, and messes with your mind. Just when you think you've solved who is behind things, readers will be yanked in another direction. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Garden Girls and will be seeking out more books by this author....more

The plot centers around individuals in search of truth, aiming to expose powerful figures who abuse it, while also seeking peace in their own lives. Show Game is a vigilante tale, and this book offers no punishment for the wrongdoers. Instead, they face the consequences of their actions through their own words, ultimately leading to their downfall.
Led by Alex, the Show Game project is set to air across various platforms, targeting a predatory priest, a deceitful politician, and a fraudulent philanthropist who all deserve retribution for their wrongdoings. Investigative journalist Owen Tanaka is determined to uncover Alex's identity. As he digs deeper, the distinction between right and wrong becomes blurred, and Owen increasingly supports Alex's mission.
The story unfolds as a game of cat and mouse, with roles shifting between predator and prey. It works as a thought-provoking piece addressing contemporary societal issues.
Drawing on an old Western theme of dispensing justice outside the confines of the legal system, the book keeps readers captivated until the surprising conclusion. Be prepared for a challenging read that will engage your mind and emotions, prompting you to form your own conclusions as you immerse yourself in Show Game by Steve Anderson.

While I typically prefer to read books in order, I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could understand the previous events without a detailed recap. The story begins slowly but gains momentum like an old-fashioned train. Once the action starts, it doesn't let up.
The story is told from multiple perspectives, which gives readers deeper and more interesting insights and increases the intrigue, which I enjoyed. The plot is filled with various events such as hidden canyon hideaways, a marriage of convenience, damsels in distress, many bad guys, kidnappings, and a depiction of the lack of women's rights during that time. The book mainly features devout characters striving to do what's right, with a focus on the journey of newlyweds Sebastian and Kat. They experience significant challenges and hardships, which lead to personal growth, and learning important lessons about themselves and marriage. This was very well written.
Fans of Western Romances with Christian values and exciting action scenes will eagerly dive into "Toward the Dawn."...more

When I first saw tI'm constantly seeking ways to improve my life both at home and at work. The book "Bold" appears to address both areas effectively.
When I first saw the Table of Contents, I was happy to find the book divided into three sections: 1. Unlock Your Bold - Rule Your Mind. 2. Cultivate Your Bold. 3. Rule Your Career. Each chapter in the book begins with a statement in bold letters starting with the phrase "When We Are Bold." For instance, the first chapter says, "When we are bold, we can identify the bold within ourselves." Chapter six begins with, "When we are bold, we leverage our unique, personal brilliance to achieve success," while chapter nine states, "When we are bold, we are intentional about our decisions."
Every chapter is highly motivating, making the reader feel as if the book was tailored specifically for them. The advice given is straightforward, easy to grasp, and simple to implement.
It was so hard to pick a favorite chapter, but chapter five's discussion on BOLD Patterns stood out to me. The opening statement of this chapter, "When we are Bold, we take responsibility for our success and our own personal power," immediately resonated with me.
Author Audrey D. Lloyd outlines what the reader can expect in this chapter: - Understand the role mindset plays in your success. - Discuss the predictable pattern of manifesting success. - Explore how to leverage this new insight to catapult your success. This chapter proved to be a significant "aha" moment for me, particularly since these concepts are ones I teach my 2nd graders about using Mindset to achieve success at school. In fact, we focus on a different mindset each day at the start of the school day. I found myself wondering why I had never internalized this fantastic idea for my own benefit.
I could continue praising this book over and over again, and how it has reshaped my thinking before the upcoming school year starts in August. My copy of BOLD is now filled with highlights, comments, ideas, and goals that I am excited to work on. I am confident that I will use BOLD as a roadmap to enhance both my personal life and my career as a teacher.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone seeking change and self-improvement. BOLD should also be your companion in achieving your goals....more

Based on several true survivor accounts, the novel includes fictional characters like Justin Collier and his family stationed in Hawaii who are the heart of the story.
The novel gave me a fresh perspective on WWII that examined unexplored territory for me, specifically the war on the Pacific Front. Readers are immersed in the tension of Pearl Harbor being bombed, and experiencing the Pacific battles firsthand. The intense action and split-second decisions during the battles dictated life or death for the sailors.
Author Jerry Borrowman's storytelling has such rich detail and emotional depth. He does precise research which adds authenticity to the plot and overall story, which is evident in the accuracy of even the smallest details. There were notes at the end of the book which recount the historical events and honors the true heroes of that time. It was fascinating to read more of the real stories the book was based on. This enriched the overall reading experience for me.

The story revolves around the theme of opposites attract, exploring the possibility of childhood friends falling in love, and fighting against demons from the past.
Arabella Lantham and Lord Henry Northcott have been harboring secret feelings for each other, which is evident in the long glances they often exchange with one another. As they interact, their feelings grow stronger, especially for Henry, also known as "The Brooding Baron."One thing I really loved was their habit of exchanging Shakespearean quotes throughout the story when they were together. This was very clever and highlighted their great chemistry.
Arabella is a strong character and knows what she wants and is very assertive in trying to attract Lord Northcott's attention. Meanwhile, he's fighting against his feelings as he struggles to keep his family's secrets hidden to protect their reputation.
The story is effective as it weaves in the theme of mental illness, using Bedlam Asylum as a backdrop showing how historically, patients were mistreated due to widespread fear and misconceptions. The plot is filled with suspense, clever banter, loyal friendships, domineering family members, phaeton driving lessons, and hints of gothic elements.

"Hidden in the Night" firmly establishes her as a must-read authorAuthor Elizabeth Goddard has quickly risen to the top of my favorite authors' list. "Hidden in the Night" firmly establishes her as a must-read author.
"Hidden in the Night" revolves around piecing together clues to locate a Jack London manuscript that contains a hidden treasure map. The situation is intricate because the "pieces" include:
-The manuscript is probably in Alaska. -Alaska's Indigenous people have a history tied to the treasure. -The true thief and those searching for the manuscript remain a mystery. -A band of saboteurs will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. -The plot includes serious threats like kidnapping, murder, and human trafficking.
In this third book of the 'Missing in Alaska' series, we follow Alaskan State Trooper Nolan Long and Ivy Elliott, a former FBI agent. They had a brief meeting in an earlier book but now join forces to find the manuscript and a missing local girl. As they work together, they face many dangers and struggle with growing feelings for each other. Their slow-burn romance feels real and fitting for the story.
Kudos to Elizabeth Goddard for her vibrant and imaginative language that vividly brings scenes to life. After reading this series, I feel as though I’ve traveled to Alaska numerous times.
Additionally, characters from the first two books reappear in the third book, which I enjoyed. While each book can be read as a stand-alone, reading them in order offers a much richer experience.
If you enjoy the Romantic Suspense genre, "Hidden in the Night" and this series are absolute reads. Goddard masterfully blends excitement, unexpected twists, romance, and faith in this thrilling adventure.
