I think my lack of satisfaction with these novellas is (this might be a *spoiler* so guard yourself accordingly) but we only get the story up until the couple starts to become…well the couple. Cozy sweet cottage on a beautiful island full of lovely fantasy characters who give the small-town atmosphere. It has a romantic storyline that was important but yet this didn’t feel like a romance?… it felt like that grumpy city character who doesn’t realize how lonely they were until the magic of small town. You know, the hallmark formula. Not to say this was cheesy, it was just a plot you have seen before done in a sweet cozy fantasy way. Also talking plant bestie ...more

We are rounding out the friend group with Grim’s story. He is tall, dark, and mysterious. But we also have watched him be so tender and sentimental during quiet moments in previous books, so I was ready to smile like a nut job at my kindle. And yes, in public, I read this book with a smile on my face. Grim is sweet and inexperienced. Celeste (his new Fae wife) is kind and approaches things softly at first, but when she finally decides to seduce her new husband she doesn’t hold back. This is low angst, slow burn sweetness. We are mostly getting the story from Emily’s journal entries, which is fine except she isn’t really interested in romance including her own. She didn’t seem so much reluctant to talk about her love interest as disinterested. ( also baby *spoiler* but our MMC is bringing multiple different ladies back to their cabin during their stay, if he was really into our FMC I didn’t feel like he would have been hooking up with the locals. Even if they tried to explain that with his flirty/extroverted personality) That would be totally fine if the romance wasn’t a main storyline. If maybe we got more honest journal entries from other characters so we could feel the development from different povs. I just wasn’t really invested. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I wouldn’t have minded if the romance was just hinted at in this book seeing as it’s going to be a series, just set up the future romance. The fairies and their nonsense really was the whole show....more

It is hard to write that in an exciting way and I don’t think this was successful. I did a lot of skimming at those bits. Also there wasn’t as much tension in the relationship as I was hoping. This book is beautifully written, if you are a fan of political intrigue fantasy than this book should call to you. The world was so well thought out. It felt real. Every character was three dimensional, everyone felt like they were making realistic choices based on their character. Not in a predictable way but in a natural way (I hope that makes sense) But the part I really loved was how the readers feelings about the characters were developed through the story. Here’s how I will explain it, You meet Prince Kadou and he is vibrating anxiety wrapped in a meat suit. He is battling with an inner voice that isn’t confident or even kind to himself. Out of the gate we see him make decisions based on fear and anxiety, which obviously don’t work out well. Enter Evemer, our straight-laced bodyguard. Seeing Kadou in this state of crippling self-doubt doesn’t rub Evemer the right way, but he also doesn’t have the context to understand what is happening to Kadou internally. And to be completely honest at first I don’t think you are supposed to “like” any of the characters completely. But then the magic of this story happens, as it unfolds not only does Evemer fall for Kadou, but you do as well. When Evemer’s heart breaks, my stomach dropped. You are there falling in love. When I reached the end of this story I felt a little frantic, we get an HFN not necessarily a HEA. So yes this is technically a romance. But I needed more. I wasn’t ready for it to end. Kadou you beautiful man I adore you. Evemer I would give you a kidney if you needed it....more

I'd like to introduce you to my favorite book. This was absolutely magical to read. It's a slow-burn fantasy romance with everything I could have ever wanted. Halla as a character is hilarious, and so likable. She inherits her late uncle's estate, which his family promptly tries to take from her. In an act of desperation she unsheathes a sword that OOPS just happens to be magical and a man pops out. Sarkis has been the servant of the sword for a very long time and has all the grumpy guardmens vibes you would expect. Top notch banter commences. The adventure is lower stakes but still so fun. The friends they make along the way became a family. The romance...chef kiss...just low steam I spent a lot of time smiling at this book like an idiot, sometimes even laughing out loud (which earned me a few curious looks from my dog) I was listening to this on audio book and literally added to cart half way through bc I knew I need to physically own this story. Call it selfcare and read this book.
