I got about 56% through, but that's it for me. These characters are supposed to be the smartest of the smart, working on a top-secret, underground, highly professional project, but instead they talk and act like damned high schoolers. The gossip, bullying, and unprofessional behavior is ridiculous.
The science part of the book is wonky, hole filled, and not well thought through. The "alien race", which are actually humans from a parallel dimension, are supposedly from 200 years in the future. Apparently this gives the author carte blanche to introduce new technologies whenever the need arises without any hint prior to their race having these capabilities.
The romance felt very insta-lovey, although the hero does make 1 attempt at actually talking to the heroine prior to ditching her.
All in all, this was just not for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

They are written out small and in the corner so as to leave maximum page space for your own doodles, and each includes an inspiring little drawing by the author to inspire you. The paper is thick, feels wonderful, and looks like it will be great for a variety of mediums. It also has a ribbon bookmark to save your place. Can't wait to sit with a cup of coffee and flip through this some more until I decide which prompt to tackle first....more

So when this book came out I knew I had to have it and it is lovely! The book itself is a great size with thick, creamy paper that feels wonderful. The content is less a how to and more an engaging pep talk on how to get started with lots of images from her own sketchbooks to serve as examples and inspiration. The writing is open and down to earth and is quite relaxing to read. I would recommend this as a great starting point for someone looking to get into sketch journaling or travel journaling!...more

Both the heroine and hero are smart, cunning, strong, kind, and responsible. The world is pretty fleshed out given the fact that this is a novella. The action scenes were on point. The political intrigue was totally believable.
All in all, I am pretty surprised and pretty happy! Granted I take any recommendation from Ilona Andrews pretty seriously, but I was still concerned given this and Polaris Rising are the author's first published works. Gotta say though, Jessie Mihalik is now an auto-buy for me!

Maybe it was the constantly changing POV's, although that doesn't normally bother me. I don't know...now I need to move onto a book for my book club though, but hopefully I give this one another shot at some point. ...more

This book was AMAZING. I typically expect to love any Ilona Andrews book, no questions asked. This one though, I did go in with a slight concern. I HATED HUGH. His character in the Kate Daniels books caused so much hurt and pain to characters I loved, that I was really unsure if I would even be interested in an entire book about him. I am glad to say I was totally proven wrong though.
What does it for me is the no holds bar "banter" which in reality is actually 2 people trying their damnedest to annoy the ever living shit outta one another. They held no punches, and if I were either character I would have snapped at one point or another! LOL!
All in all this book was fantastic. It was funny, tense, surprising, and enjoyable. I will definitely be reading any and all future books written about these complex characters.

It didn’t help that the narrator herself basically says sorry there’s no ending to this book at the end and basically invalidates everything you e just read.
Not to mention the fact that the narrator constantly and purposefully withholds information from the reader and then admits to doing it.
I mean honestly, what the hell did I just read?? ...more

It took me about 20 pages or so to get into the prose style of writing, but once I did I was entirely hooked. Half way through I was speeding through and inhaling every page. By the end I was Sad, mad, proud, disgusting, empowered, and exhausted.
