This was really good, in a slow moving and elegant kind of way. I would shelve this as 'light fantasy', so newcomers are welcome and anyone looking for less high strung intricate fantasy.
This is exactly the type of book I can see blowing up on BookTok (TikTok). We got a super slow burn romance, enemies to lovers, villain origin stories, characters reborn and reimagined, and basic YA tropes (chosen ones, best friend, warrior, love interest, etc.) all subverted and flipped on their heads. Very very nice.
However, while the beginning started off extremely strong, the middle half of the book kind of dragged a bit and I was looking at a 3 star read. And then the last 50 pages and the ending happened and so I'm left screaming and panicking and already NEED the next book.
FUCK.
I can already tell things are about to get really, really interesting. '
Oh did I mention the main character is bisexual?HERE FOR IT.

Not gonna lie, I had rather high expectations regarding this book. This retelling is almost point for point from the original storyline with some slight key differences. The parties though, are definitely a spectacular sight to explore and feel through. I just wished there were more elements that were explored and explained upon in the book (Jordan's ability, the magic system, maybe even forking off from the original stance and story of the Great Gatsby and blooming into something else, something vastly different.)

Let me just start off that if you like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and the dramatic flair for the points of being hella extra.....
.....then look no further folks because we got here the same run-of-the-mill mediocre and somewhat boring (mystery/drama) tale of a pretentious high school student uncovering the buried secrets of the past, all the while getting caught up in a tangle wood of lies and deceit in the present.
Doesn't that sound like a juicy fishhook of a TV show/movie you might find somewhere like on the CW or Lifetime??
Because literally hellllll nooooo. I'm over it already.
So I legit thought this book was Adult but it wasn't; it's YA.
And if y'all know me (chuckle, chuckle)...
I LITERALLY DO NOT LIKE YA MYSTERY THRILLERS.
Well, most of the time anyways.
And 'thriller'???
Um nonexistent. Maybe that's just on me and its just marketed as mystery/suspense. Well whatever because that wasn't even the fault I had with the book; it was with the main character herself. Charlie Fairchild. And don't get me started on these names lmaooo. I.e.: montgomery, spencer, avery,....rich, spoiled, ass, *&!*!@#.
In short, I found Charlie to be extremely arrogant and ignorant. She was annoyed and rude to her 'friend' and found this so called 'friend' irritating because she wasn't some rich girl who wore the designer clothes and labels -- No, it was more like she was trying too hard because her parents couldn't afford the school so she's on a scholarship so what a try hard yada yada.....
um excuse me, as someone who was on scholarships for the very same reason,....don't get me started.
And the suicide jokes. Really? It's 2018. Not even that. It's just in poor taste and quality.
But all things aside, was it the worst book I've ever read?
Hell no. But to say in the least: somewhat overbearing and pretentious, this book does have an interesting aspect (unrealistic) of an anonymous club, full of hierarchy and power, and the corruption that runs with it. Not to mention the consequences.
This book is choked full of them, in fact.

In all honesty though, this is by far, my favorite book by Holly Black. This did not disappoint. Her other work, The Spiderwick Chronicles, is one of my all time favorite childhood series. The series is special to me because it introduced me to a world that is literally in my backyard, full of fairies, sprites, magic, and other wonderful things.
The Cruel Prince, is full of magic, darkness, bad-ass characters, and delves deep into the question of what it means to be human + morals. It was utterly fantastic and magical. I'm still trapped in that world, my mind reeling and shaking over this glorious new book.
Black's style of writing, however, was my favorite aspect of the whole book. It felt so atmospheric at times, I would have to reread several passages to take it all in. As it should, since it literally takes place in a realm of Fairies. That's not to say though, that I still have a couple minor problems with the book like pacing, middle syndrome drag, and actually a few bits and pieces of some confusing and messy writing, contrary to what I said earlier, but still.
I don't want to say too much since the book won't actually come out till January of 2018....but maybe by that time around, I'll reread it again and catch what I missed because, shit got real y'all. It got so turnt up I legit had to put the book down and take deep breaths.....and then dive back into it all again with more dread and much excitement.
Watch out for this one. It's a real juicy and poisonous fruit that'll entrap you with its cruel and sweet smelling juiciness and fruitness. ;)

We are all anthologies. We are each thousands of pages long, filled with fairy tales and poetry, mysteries and tragedy, forgotten stories in the back no one will ever read.
I feel like a lot of people going into this book will come in with high expectations and somewhat of a buzz, especially if one has already read Marisha Pessl's raved thriller, Night Film. I think a lot of people going in will expect something.....else, but will end up with something different, instead.
This book was so bizarre and strange, but good. But more like.....an 'ambiguous' good.
To say that I've never read anything like this before is an understatement. Neverworld Wake was astonishingly surprising, but in a subtle way. It's like a light switch that no one has ever turned on, but it lights up something we've never fully seen before.....**vague hand gestures**
I was super pumped to get my hands on this book and I was lucky enough to get an arc and upon reading it, I simply devoured it in a day. And finished it. And oh boy.
Since it isn't publicly out yet (at the time of this review/date read), I fully can't express my feelings or talk about it with someone since it's still months away from its release date.
but
I think this is one of the rare times where I'm actually glad that I don't have anyone to talk about it yet. This feeling that I have, really resonated with the same 'feeling' I had while reading it. Weird, I know. But it's like a sleeping secret. A dream waiting to happen.....(I'm being hella dramatic right now about this, but....)
I think where it fell a little for me was the middle of the book. But I really liked the beginning, how it all started. And the ending. Especially the ending.
After finishing it, I didn't really know how to rate this book, actually. But now a week later, I don't think it really matters on whether I give this book five stars, one star, or even three stars.
I think it's just simply-- one of those books that you're glad to have read.
3 Stars.

Full of lush and prose writing, the author takes us on a wondrous journey through a very different take on the fairy world, that stands very well on its own. This book is a standalone so don't worry about any sequels coming afterwards. I, for one though, wouldn't complain if there were other books written within the same universe. The magic and the world itself was so interesting; I wish the author would have expanded on it just a bit. From the blurb and early reviews I can see that a lot of people might compare this book to, A Court of Thorns and Roses.
However, skip all the raunchiness and hyphens, you have a better written, well-meaning, and crafted story. (People who've read A Court of Thorns and Roses, will only get this joke, calm down.)
However, there were several aspects which I did not like and I will go more in depth with a video on my channel closer to the release date of the book. In short, the middle lagged a bit for me and the ending was very rushed.
This book is basically your average fairy tale expanded and glorified with better story, plot, and writing. I think people who have read, Uprooted, will really really enjoy this book.
It's a beautifully composed story: an artsy fairy tale and nothing more.

Thank you to Simon and Schuster for proving me an arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book so much. Probably more than I intended to. And it'sUPDATE JUNE 10, 2017.
Now that was some wicked, delightful, bloody fun.
I enjoyed this book so much. Probably more than I intended to. And it's extremely short. The book barely clocks in 300 pages. However, it is an arc so there's that but I actually, genuinely, enjoy this format a lot better.
The main character is Hawaiian and there's some great LGBTQ representation in the book as well. I could relate very well with the main character, whose name is, Mariko Young. Going to a midwestern state after growing up in a diverse community with a well verse culture, was a complete shock to the system. To give you some background info, I was born and raised in California. However, for my freshman year of college, I went to a private university in Kansas. And oooh boy. Different as fuck. But eye opening and a wonderful experience.
The kills in the book were real bloody, bloody. I loved it. Not to sound like some sick person but I surprisingly winced at some of parts of the book and had to take a couple breaths at times because it was so gruesome. And I can actually watch it on screen no problem. Written on paper, however....
If not for the YA classification, this book, were it made into a movie, would be hardcore rated R. Not just for bloody violence but for the profanity as well. It had so much more than the average YA book. I'm actually surprised that this book will be released for ages 14+. Don't get me wrong, kids of all ages swear and cuss all the time now, but I thought it was rare for YA books to contain at least more than two or three f-words. I also think the book itself would have benefited so much more if the characters in were in college instead of in high school. Realistically speaking of course.
Overall, There's Someone Inside Your House, was fun fun fun. Definitely recommend. It's funny actually, I was really hesitant and wary of reading this book because of the author's previous works. This was my first book from her and I wasn't disappointed! Stephanie had only written teen romance contemporaries beforehand and I was kind of curious and careful as to see how she would handle horror.
But good job, Ms. Perkins. Kudos to you. I hope you come back to this particular genre in the future. Nonetheless, this book wasn't perfect. But easily the most entertaining book I've read all year. But spoilers for later.
Holy shit that was so, so good. I literally cannot right now because the last 15% of the book deeessttroooooooyyed me, NNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGHI AM DECEASED.

I finished this when the trailer for Ready Player One dropped and I'M JUST SO MUCH MORE EXCITED.
Virtual reality world, bounty hunters, badass heroine, game-changing twists....seriously. What more can I want??!
This book was such a delicious and exploding piece of treasure. It was colorful, beautifully written, full of non stop action--it grabs you viciously by the neck and pulls you all in without any regrets. The representation in this book was just as b e a u t i f u l. I just wish maybe we could have had a little bit more of character development from them though.
I freakingLOVE this book, so MUCH.
I honestly can't wait for a reread again because I know I couldn't read fast enough to absorb in all the greatness from the pages.... It just didn't work through a one time read.
I want and needm o r e.
TBH, before starting Warcross, I thought this book was going to be a standalone.
I am SO GLAD that it isn't because, whew, Marie Lu, thank you. Thank you for one of the best books I've had the greatest pleasure of reading this year. Thanks for that thrilling ride. Thanks for all the fun...
because now, it's all 'go big or go home'. So bring us home mami. Bring us to highest level you can. I'm so fucking ready.
(I was going to do a review on my channel, but IF U C K. ME.
And I HATE you so much right now, Mr. Kristoff.
Literally GTFO.
*screams for days*
(I was going to do a review on my channel, but I'm waiting for the UK edition to arrive so I can show all of you how beautiful it is, so once I do, I'll leave a link to it down below.)
I think this book surpassed all of my expectations and brought them up to an all new high. It was so, so good. Again, Jay's writing was excellent, full of buttery prose and lyrical pieces. This time around though, I didn't mind the footnotes. With the first book, I was mildly annoyed and somewhat irritated but then I got used to it and by the time the Godsgrave came around, I was so interested and more invested in the story, I flew through E V E R Y T H I N G.
With twice more the action, blood, guts, violence, gore, and badassery, I really recommend you give this series (trilogy) a go. It's bloody fucking awesome and with the twists and unexpected surprises that this book has, your head will literally implode from all the insanity.
But really, R E A L L Y, Mr. Kristoff, that cruel, c r u e l, ending. I see you. I see you. And how I hate you (relatively speaking).
