It somehow manages to use one medical case to call in to question all of our society's beliefs about the truth, rationality and objectivity of Western science and medicine. I enjoyed learning about Hmong culture and the tenacity of the Hmong character, especially in the context of the war in Laos, which I'm sad to admit I knew pretty much nothing about before I read this. This starts out strong and just continues to build a more complex and engaging story as it goes along. I'm very excited for my class discussion next week, which will revolve around this book....more
