I would use this for students who are getting ready to have a new sibling. That’s a hard time for a lot of students an can cause lots of problems at school (which this books shows) so it’s good for them to be able to connect. ...more

This book is great to read to remember how America got to were it is today and how free of a country we are.

This book is about a child named Ruthie who has this thing call a snurtch that bothers her and her classmates. It makes pencils fly across the room and it scribbles all over a classmates paper. It sits in Ruthie's seat and it makes her burp and laugh loudly. Everyone in the class has a snurtch but no one knows how to control it.
I love this book because I feel like it sheds light on whats going on in some students heads. They know whats right and wrong but sometimes they just can't resist from doing wrong. I also feel like this could connect to all students, students with behavior disorders, students with bad home lives and people with social or personality disorders.

The story was told in a graphic novel context and It was placed in an urban area that was modern day. There is still the 7 "dwarfs" who are just children and the evil stepmother still tries to kill snow by hiring someone and by giving her a poison apple. Snow is awoken by the cities magic and not by a kiss.
I would like to use this to reach some of my more artistic students, showing them how they don't have to use their words to tell a story. I would also use this book with other snow white stories to show kids perspective taking and how people interpret things differently than other people....more

There is a girl who realizes that there is an escaped slave who is living in their families barn, but instead of turning the slave in she instead takes leftovers out and gives it to the slave. She continues to do this throughout the book until the slave leaves and leaves the girl with a gift, a corn husk doll.
This would be a great book to be used when teaching about the underground railroad and about slavery. It would also be a good book to show kids examples of kindness and taking care of other people.

This is very much an easy to read the book. One thing that I love about it the simplicity of all the words and how well they explain new things. I would read this to my students as an example in order for them to write their own stories. I feel like this is a realistic book in the sense that my students could write about an experience where they didn't like something or didn't want to do something....more

I think this book is a really good connection book. One way it could connect with students is through the Hispanic heritage and culture it takes place in. This is a book that I would highly suggest to my students and I feel that the series would be a good escape for a lot of students. The one problem that I had with the first book is the language. The whole book was clean of bad words until the final chapters and I've heard that the bad words pick up in the 2nd and 3rd books.
I think that I could possibly use this book to talk about either war or different cultures and poverty levels. I feel that this book does a great job of displaying the war zone and how biased that war reporting can be. I also feel that this book shows the drastic difference between rich and poor and how they connect with June and Day, and how the people from different financial backgrounds can still be friends.
I would probably only have this in a classroom of 5th grade or higher....more
