The author is a very fine writer. She is a well informed and intelligent teacher and analyst.
I pray many important politicians, including members of our Supreme Court of the United States of America, would read this little book. Unfortunately, the people who need to read and study our history and its effects on our people, rarely do. They make up their own vision and "perception" of what happened, justifying their selfishness.
I have read right wing (including "evangelical Christianity") history and their propaganda. It is so specious and blatantly selfish that any thinking person should see right through it. I mention this so I can say I practice what I preach....more

This book is very important for our history and our current culture. The book discloses many vitally important phenomena of a hundred years ago which are present now. The hate mongering now is a bit more sophisticated or perhaps just not as blatant; however, just as appalling and hazardous as ever. Having done some study of what Jesus of Nazareth was teaching, it is baffling how hate, division, judgment of others and egotism has supplanted his message of love. Then being used for the politics of government it really seems driven by the forces of evil.
A great book: well written, a page turner and one on which my mind will turn often for a very long time....more

While Bernie speaks about his campaigns and his treatment in the media, it is born from a desire to tell the full story, not any ego or pride. He is truly a humble person who has the best of intentions for everyone and for the country most of us love (or want to love).
None of his ideas and analysis are unshared by others, and other authors. His suggested ideas may not be the only ones which would solve the obvious problems; however, he is learned, experienced and extremely intelligent. I hope this book's bestselling status will spread his message. It is a masterpiece of political science for today's world....more

The husband has "honorable mention" in many books I have read. This is the first full discussion of him, and I enjoyed every word. Even more interesting is his wife, the daughter of Senator Benton of Missouri. I have read some about her father but really knew nothing about her and this book is a gem of a discussion about this important American.
The book discusses general history of the times of their lives but dives deep into their lives. For an American history buff I am sure glad I was able to read this one....more

I have had some teachers who felt that way to me, true mentors and moral teachers. I expect history will treat her better than a large number of Americans do currently.

This book caught my eye because of its connection to Laurel, the location of HGTV's show, Home Town, one of my favorites. The book confirmed much of my uninformed opinions of Mississippi but, like the television show, made it more real and understandable. White supremacy, and all of its ramifications, is a horrible fact of our lives, with devastating impacts in so many aspects of all our lives. The television show, its characters and its producers avoid this topic, emphasizing the beauty, serenity, elegance and comity of small town life. I grew up in a very small town, smaller than Laurel. I like the effort and the effect of the television show. I am in abject horror of that town's history with white supremacy. A great book and an interesting read. A book that makes me think is always the goal, right?...more

I think his analysis of the politics of America is correct and insightful. The one area on which he only obscurely alluded is the gullibility of large segments of our population. The book was a very touching and heartfelt discussion of his son. It is also a loving and kind description of an insider's view of Congress and, at least, the democratic party members of it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book which will serve as a tool for future historians. I think we will hear and see much more of Jamie Raskin. I am looking forward to it....more
