I liked the first half, the fun and banter, but once they arrive back in Gunnison it feels like we missed a whole bunch of chapters, cause all of sudden everything is cranked up to a hundred. The story, the drama, the romance. With as intense and dark as it got it it mostly felt disconnected and like I was suddenly reading a completely different book. Speaking of the romance... I was bit underwhelmed tbh it seemed like all the development from friends to more and all that happened off page. It also didn't help that lovey-dovey Shae felt more 11 than 31. Love, love, loved her animal though!!...more

Interesting mix of old and new elements. Loved the connection between Reaper/Stryker and Isa. Also loved that she was a bit "older", already successful and with some live experience under her belt (I don't remember his age ever being mentioned) and not just another 20-something, broke and down-on-her-luck-still-hoping-to-find-herself-damsel... The only disappointing bit was that their romance bits towards the end, you know, the shift from friends to something more and all that felt very rushed. So much so that I was starting to wonder whether it (the romance part of their story) would become a second book for the two of them. Still.. it's gonna be fun to see what sounds like some very familiar old trailers again ;)...more

First impr2.5 stars, rounding up My favorite prince and least favorite "princess". There are no two ways about it, I didn't like Sam. Plain and simple. First impression was anything but impressive so were the second, third and it just kept getting worse. With every decision she made, she kept making it worse, make me like her even less. Her crew was just as bad, though I've to say I warmed to them somewhat towards the end. Sadly the same can't be said for her. I thought her stupid, selfish, craven and her occasional bouts of playing the martyr didn't change that. Not once did she actually talk to Falke, ask him anything, but rather assumed things and simply made decisions for him. And again with the prolonged and unnecessary misunderstandings. Makes for very one dimensional conflict. It's all made worse by the fact that I was so looking forward to Falke's story. I wanted someone for him who saw him, who sees him, who was able to see beneath the stoic exterior. Sam never did. I wanted better for him. Apart from that it was a good story and I liked the change of setting, both in terms of location as well as a break from ongoing conflicts "at home"....more

Although I hav3.5 stars, rounding up I liked the overall vibe of this one much better than the last one. I thought Reid and Jas better matched as well.
Although I have to say I'm growing quite tired of the blind assumptions and deliberate lack of communication leading to never-ending and often needless misunderstandings. It's like now without the drama of conflict with the var, the mining camps and the like there's little to no other drama other then these misunderstandings.
Which reminds me, we're four books in we've yet to learn how the Var people actually make money, how they finance this lavishness we hear so much about. Do they mine and trade the ore as well? If not, what do they need ambassadors for?...more
Somewhat disappointing conclusion of the series, especially since most of it had nothing to with Qurilixen or the Var. Wasn't a fan of Mei either. A biSomewhat disappointing conclusion of the series, especially since most of it had nothing to with Qurilixen or the Var. Wasn't a fan of Mei either. A bit too full of herself, entitled and judgmental. Too many lies and secrets. Wanting to have it both ways. And she wouldn't even consider him until after he revealed who he was. Big no-no! While I quite liked what we saw of Jarek in the previous two books, liked that he wasn't as averse to the old Var ways as his brothers... I didn't like how he turned into a brainless, babbling idiot around her. Didn't like it with the girls, don't like it with him either...
While there were definitely some things I liked better in Lords of the Var compared to the Dragon Lords I missed having a common thread, a story that wove and connected throughout the various individual books. Here we only had that in books 1+ 2 and it felt like some of that was still unresolved. Like what became of Myrddin's son, etc. It was like most of the storyline was just completely dropped in favor of introducing the players for various spin-offs... It's weird, I remember I liked the Daig ladies better and was often annoyed with their princes and lords, whereas here it was the opposite more often than not....more

Didn't enjoy it quite as much as the fist book. It was a good story, but her brainless, speechless shtick was a bit too annoying (especially since this didn't allow for any banter). Same goes for their continued and rather protracted misunderstandings. Like they said children. Although it was rather fun to watch Quinn's turmoil in trying to figure out his new "insanity". Loved his attempts at gifts,... the teddy bear!!! Had me in stitches....more
So far I'm liking it better than Dragon Lords, no breeding festival, no binding crystal, no maiden's last breath, and best of all no maiden!! Now if oSo far I'm liking it better than Dragon Lords, no breeding festival, no binding crystal, no maiden's last breath, and best of all no maiden!! Now if only Lyssa were actually as good as she thinks she is, this would've been even better. A lot of attitude and lip, but with little skill to back it up from what we get to see. Loved the "Gena" reveal! Brilliant! To think that each of the ladies so far makes mention of all the other simpering, man-crazy idiots, so far none of them actually are...
Still, an entertaining read. The banter is quite fun as well as the clash of the Var's worldview with a modern woman. I kept thinking at least they have a good reason for acting like barbaric assholes considering who their father was and how they were raised unlike the dragon princes with their loving and devoted to each other parents, including their fierce dragon queen mother.......more

I had to force myself to finish a book that's only 172 pages to begin with and that pretty much says it all. Normally I love a hot steamy shifter romance, if it has some good humor even better and I like dating/ matchmaking agency type of stories in general. But this one... It felt rushed, contradictory and didn't make sense. Even if it is OTT you still want it to make sense within that frame of reference. The first thing that pissed me of was how she goes all brainless every time she's around them and then it's all wet panties and raging boners. That's it. The End. At least it feels like that's all there is to this "story". There's no romance, no connection, not even chemistry. A few romantic gestures we get told about but never actually see, "experience" them. And then at the end with pack?!? Completely unbelievable!! Also, Tally was all confident and sassy in the beginning, but as she said herself these two bring out her insecurities... why in the world would you wanna be with someone like that, woman?!???...more

Part of me wishes I'd stopped reading when I wanted to, but of course I was too curious, too invested in the overall arc... but let's just say if this had been the first couple I would've DNF'd both them and the series real quick. Asher's story was intriguing but I just never warmed up to Ashlyn. Right from the get go it was not a good first impression. Acting all high and mighty with totally misplaced attitude. I found her quite self-involved with no sense of self-preservation. No survival instinct. and then "training" him. Not cool. As for the overall story. It was one heck of a story and I really wish I hadn't read this last part. Very dark, and heavy. Even after all the revelations, didnt like Odine+Noah and all the shit they pulled.
