A little disappointed with this book. Normally, C. A. Hall is a solid three star read for me but this just didn’t flow smoothly, which is why I knocked off half a star.
Quick Thoughts: - Was a little confused as to exact setting but it ultimately didn’t matter, all you need to know is that it’s a snowy mountain area - Love this set up of a small town of crabby people who the protagonist has to, and does, win over - Story suffers from moving along too fast, even for an insta-love story - Like in her other books, when it gets to the big third act drama, it fizzles out and doesn’t feel satisfying - Really just felt too darn short for the story it set out to tell - Seems like whole big scenes were missing/skipped over to make the story shorter - I love shifter stories were the person and their animal have two distinctive personalities and wants - It was funny how Nessa got out of uncomfortable conversations
Overall I came upon the same issue I have with her other books, fantastic world building, a fun set up, but the story moves too quickly and the big final drama goes out with a whimper and doesn’t live up to the hype. If this had been the first book I read by C. A. Hall, I probably would’ve skipped her others but since it isn’t, I’ll pick up another. ...more

The only reason I picked this up was becauseStars: 4.5 Format: Audiobook Narrator: Mia Hutchinson Shaw Series: Stand Alone Steam Level: One steamy scene
The only reason I picked this up was because it was on sale and more than a few people I follow really enjoyed it. So glad I did. It lived up to the hype.
Quick Thoughts: - Loved that this is a historical setting where queer relationships are just an everyday normal thing and not the drama pushing the story forward - Even though I KNEW the grandmother had to die, I still choked up when she passed - I found it hard figuring out how time passed in the story. At one point I thought a few years had gone by but it was only a few months - There were a few plot twists that I could see coming a mile away but I didn’t mind them when they finally popped up because I was interested to see how they would play out - This is the first time I’ve listened to something read by this narrator and will be on the look out for more from her - The cover is gorgeous and I’m seriously tempted to get a physical copy to stare at - I’m a sucker for Lottie type characters and she was fantastic - Was not expecting how things went down when the big bad appeared, excellent execution in putting me through the wringer
Overall a great debut novel and I will be picking up the next book Sydney J. Shields writes. I knocked off half a star because the ending felt a little rushed and it like there should have been more to the book beyond what was there ...more
