Elle propose ici un excelllent roman de fantasy que je qualifierais de fantasy historique. Le surnaturel est très discret, voire absent. Le ton et le vocabulaire médiéval donnent une impression de réalisme qui fonctionne parfaitement. Le récit n’est pas flamboyant mais j’ai beaucoup aimé suivre les aventures de cette protagoniste atypique qui cherche son nom et son histoire, ainsi que les personnages secondaires qu’elle rencontre sur son chemin. J'avais commencé à lire les aventures d'Harry Dresden mi-juillet, et à peu près un mois et demi plus tard, je viens de terminer le dix-septième et derJ'avais commencé à lire les aventures d'Harry Dresden mi-juillet, et à peu près un mois et demi plus tard, je viens de terminer le dix-septième et dernier roman paru à ce jour. C'est toujours un peu émouvant de dire au revoir, même provisoirement puisque d'autres romans sont prévus, à des personnages que l'on a suivis pendant un tel voyage.
Pourtant, ce roman n'est pas le meilleur du cycle à mes yeux. Comme je le craignais, après un tome qui servait de long préambule mais qui m'avait passionné, celui-ci est riche en scènes d'action, ce qui n'est jamais ma tasse de thé. J'ai donc survolé certains chapitres, préférant me concentrer sur l'essentiel et sur ce qui me plait dans ce cycle : les interactions entre Harry Dresden et les autres personnages.
Si je devais tirer un bilan d'ensemble de ce cycle, je dirais qu'il est très divertissant, qu'il a de nombreux défauts, mais que ses qualités compensent largement et donnent chaque fois envie de lire la suite. Je serai donc probablement au rendez-vous quand Jim Butcher nous proposera la suite des Dresden Files....more

Je l'ai déjà dit à plusieurs reprises ici, je ne suis pas un grand fan des scènes d'action, dans cette saga comme dans d'autres ; elles sont peu nombreuses dans ce roman, et c'est très bien ainsi pour moi. On sent d'ailleurs clairement que ce volume n'est que le préambule du suivant, une sorte de longue (mais passionnante) montée en tension avant l'affrontement titanesque qui s'annonce dans le prochain roman. J'ai quelques craintes pour celui-ci, car il risque d'être riche en scènes d'action ......more

Heureusement, on retrouve les ingrédients qui me plaisent dans cette saga, et notamment les relations entre Harry Dresden et son entourage familial et amical. J'ai toujours du mal avec les scènes d'action, mais c'est plus une question de goût qu'un problème dans l'écriture proprement dite. Concernant le récit, on sent que les enjeux continuent de monter et que le fil rouge de la saga prend forme progressivement. Une tempête approche, comme le dit fort justement Harry à la fin du roman....more

Et surtout, les scènes d'action m'ont totalement ennuyé. Heureusement qu'il reste quelques interactions entre Harry et les personnages secondaires pour sauver tout cela. J'espère que le prochain tome retrouvera les qualités des précédents !...more

Pour cela, ils proposent 27 raisons de lire de la science-fiction et de la fanais, regroupées en cinq grandes thématiques : le plaisir, l'exploration, la connaissance, le sens, et la transformation.
Ces chapitres sont entrecoupés de 19 entretiens avec des acteurs de l'imaginaire, que ce soit des auteurs et autrices ou universitaires.
Evidemment, les deux auteurs parcourent des centaines de références, et j'ai du me retenir fortement pour ne pas faire explorer ma pile à lire en notant tous les livres que j'ai découvert ou redécouvert grâce à eux.
Cet ouvrage pourrait bien devenir un classique et la nouvelle bible des littératures de l'imaginaire. Je suis ravi de l'avoir lu, ce fut un réel plaisir !...more

L'auteur met en scène des tribus germaniques qui vivent une vie paisible, voire utopique, dans la forêt de Mirkwood. Les tribus s’unissent pour se défendre contre une invasion romaine. Ces romains qui vivent dans des villes, représentants de la « civilisation moderne », viennent en effet pour piller, s’emparer des richesses de la forêt, et remettre en cause le mode de vie ancestral des tribus qui vivaient en paix et en harmonie entre elles et avec leur environnement.
Il faut d’abord s’accrocher un peu, car le vocabulaire et le style sont volontairement archaïques, et il faut accepter que certains dialogues soient écrits en vers. Une fois passé cet obstacle qui n’est pas insurmontable, on peut se laisser happer par un récit à la fois épique et profondément humain, avec des personnages forts et mémorables.
Ce roman est un peu inclassable, entre roman historique, récit mythique, et prémisse d'un genre qui n’existait pas encore : la fantasy historique, car le surnaturel est ici discret, en arrière-plan, mais bel et bien présent.
J’ai beaucoup aimé ce roman, et je comprends désormais mieux pourquoi William Morris est parfois cité comme une source d’inspiration pour J.R.R Tolkien et au-delà pour toute la fantasy du XXe siècle....more

Thomson lui a consacré, j'avais envie de lire les oeuvres littéraires de William Morris. J'ai donc commencé par son premier roman, A Dream of John Ball, publié en 1888.
Dans ce court roman, le narrateur, très probablement William Morris lui-même même s'il n'est pas nommé, raconte un rêve dans lequel il est plongé dans l'Angleterre du XIVe siècle et y rencontre John Ball, le prêtre dissident à l'origine de la Révolte des Paysans. Ils échangent sur leurs sociétés respectives, John Ball découvre que son rêve d'une société égalitaire ne s'est pas encore réalisé au XIXe siècle, mais le narrateur le rassure quelque peu en lui affirmant que son rêve est toujours vivant et que d'autres ont pris le relais pour le réaliser. Ainsi, William Morris nous présente John Ball comme un précurseur d'une longue tradition égalitaire qui s'incarnerait désormais dans le socialisme.
Au-delà des aspects politiques, William Morris montre dans ce texte sa passion pour l'époque médiévale et matérialité, notamment l'architecture. Le contraste entre le village médiéval qu'il visite en rêve et son environnement réel est saisissant, et on sent nettement toute la tradition romantique de l'auteur dans ses descriptions fines et nostalgiques.
Enfin, je dois dire un mot du style, joli, mais parfois un peu "lourd" de ce texte, qui le rend parfois ardu à lire. Si l'intention m'a beaucoup plu, l'exécution m'a un peu déçu....more

Après deux tomes décevants, j'avais un peur et le début de celui-ci ne m'a pas rassuré : l'auteur retombe dans les travers de creuser encore un peu plus la mythologie de son univers en inventant artificiellement des concepts dont on n'avait jamais entendu parler jusque là. Heureusement, la fin est un peu meilleure et boucle joliment la série en revenant à ses fondamentaux....more

L'historien Antoine de Baecque signe un très beau livre, entre roman historique et fantastique, qui met en scène une lignée de vampires aristocrates pendant la Révolution française. Alors que la famille reste fidèle aux traditions aristocratiques et royalistes, un oncle et son jeune neveu choisissent le camp de la Révolution et de la République. Mais la Révolution, comme les vampires, dévore parfois ses enfants ...
L'allégorie du vampire fonctionne parfaitement, et l'auteur mêle parfaitement les éléments historiques et fantastiques pour proposer un récit que j'ai pris plaisir à suivre du début à la fin. Je ne peux que confirmer l'appréciation de Johann Chapoutot sur le mélange réussi entre histoire et littérature dans ce roman....more
