I am a big fan of Sapolsky. I have watched his Stanford lectures on human behavior on YouTube. In this book he asserts that humans don't have free wilI am a big fan of Sapolsky. I have watched his Stanford lectures on human behavior on YouTube. In this book he asserts that humans don't have free will. Our decisions are not conscious but rather a result of of our experiences, biology and geography.
I agree with him to a large degree but I am still not convinced about the complete absence of free will. What Sapolsky wanted was a neurological basis for free will and until you define free will you don't know what you are looking for. One of his statements was that the brain makes its decision before we are aware of it. That does not exclude free will. That simply says our awareness comes a bit later. Many times we make choices and do act on them. We cannot account for the entire reasoning cascade but that can be because of the limitations of our brain's self awareness features. He posits multiple examples where damages to the brain anatomy caused various disorders and problems. Again just because one person cannot make decisions does not imply another cannot. We are limited certainly in the ways we can act but that does not imply free will does not exist. A perfectly healthy person without bias and the ability to act on his choices can very much choose to act and not be compelled to act.
Overall though, I enjoyed the book. It is quite easy to read and sometimes it gets quite technical where I did gloss over a few paragraphs. A recommended read for anybody interested in understanding how brains work. ...more
This is quite a good book on why there are so many people disaffected with their jobs. Although I myself don’t hate my job(at least my current one), IThis is quite a good book on why there are so many people disaffected with their jobs. Although I myself don’t hate my job(at least my current one), I would definitely not like to compromise my personal life for the sake of financial security. There are a huge number of people doing jobs that they hate just so as to get paid. This book explores how that came to happen because of capitalism, or more precisely, corporatism and how it made so many of us wage slaves.
Now the arguments made by the author are not rock solid and quantifiable, he is not comparable to Thomas Picketty. But at least some of the ideas make a huge amount of sense. The author also suggests Universal Basic Income as one mechanism that we can implement and I am behind that too.
Overall, a good introspective book on the failure of corporatism to deliver the mass of humans from bondage....more

I read it primarily for two reasons - first, I have done a bit of day trading for a couple of months. Second, I proofread a few pages of this book for the Gutenberg.org text.
The book is a slim book and a very easy read. Crump is mostly to the point and deals with his ideas quickly. He does not give elaborate explanations and multiple anecdotes for his observations. The advices he gives to novice traders are the same that are found on current books and websites on trading. He mentions the operators, cutting your losses, hedging with options, mental discipline and all the stuff which current advisors talk about.
It seems nothing has changed apart from the settlement cycle. An interesting fact - London stock exchange settled only two days per month - the middle and end.
Overall, it is a very decent read. No idea why it does not have any readers....more

The author makes the case that credit was the first financial instrument at least in cities. Barter was not that much of a big deal contrary to conventional economic thought. Although the book flows smoothly I am not sure about the points the author is making since quite a lot of the evidence appears anecdotal and just cherry picked to make his point. Plus he is quite judgemental on quite a lot of the social policies. The author is not unbiased.
The book is a good read but I would not suggest this is the truest or best book....more
