➕ What I liked : Some of the side characters.
➖ What I disliked:
Thin plot. (The hero made the deduction/conclusion about the heroine early in the book, so there was no real chase etc.)
Too much focus on the jewels and the royalty etc. and not enough time on the couple/main characters and their romance.
The heroines personality was too inconsistent.
The main characters love for each other felt too forced, and the why and how of why the hero fell in love with the heroine and her with him is rather mysterious/unclear.
The relationship is mostly based on lust/sex. (But the romantic build up and chemistry between the main characters was still very unconvincing/lacking and rushed.)
Immature and annoying heroine.
Rather flat characters.
Generic/formulaic character descriptions (appearance.)
The villain was underdeveloped.
Disjointed.
Repetitive character description ( both main characters in different ways harp on about the big size difference between them…. especially the hero who keeps referring to the heroine as tiny and little and delicate/slight etc. and to himself as a big man etc.)
Some of the side characters. (The heroines younger sister and her crush were kind of cute and funny in a over the top way.)
➖ Wh⭐ 1 star.
➕What I liked :
Some of the side characters. (The heroines younger sister and her crush were kind of cute and funny in a over the top way.)
➖ What I disliked:
Stereotyped and clichéd villains and/or bad characters. (All the bad/despicable characters were described as fat in one way or another, which is bad on all levels.) ...more
The hero did not grovel enough for what he did to the heroine.
The heroine forgave the hero too easily and too fast.
The main characters lacked depth and were rather one dimensional characters.
Repetitive. (Most especially about how often it is mentioned how big the heroes hands were and how big and brawny he was… but also other things)
Verbose.
Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice. (Especially the hero… except for different hair color/eye color the hero of this book and the other books I have read by this author are rather interchangeable/similar when it comes to description/visual appearance…the hero is big/bulky and very muscular and very often tall or much taller than the heroine… a little diversity and variation is always more interesting/welcome)
The exaggeration in the description about how big and brawny the hero was.
The heroines extremely meddling and immature brothers. (The heroines brothers had no thought about how reckless they were and how thoughtless their behavior was towards their sister and what they did to her etc. and what they did was very irresponsible and deplorable behavior)
The heroine was a little bit of a Mary Sue character.
Inconsistencies.
Unanswered questions/issues. (Why was the heroine not “ruined” when she was jilted etc.?)
The reason the hero jilted the heroine was a rather big issue that had to do with what the hero had done when he was 17 years old… but this issue was more or less just glossed over.
Mostly takes place in the countryside/country estat⭐⭐ 2 stars.
➕ What I liked :
Widowed heroine.
Pregnant heroine.
Rather interesting secondary character.
Mostly takes place in the countryside/country estate.
➖ What I disliked:
The romantic build up and chemistry between the main characters was lacking/unconvincing and kind of rushed.
The plot was a little too much like a soap opera and too over the top.
Rather generic/formulaic character descriptions (appearance.)
Clichéd.
The main characters needed a little more depth and character development.
Too many wishy-washy feelings (back and forth about decisions)
Edward ( the hero) had too much self hatred and it got annoying, he blamed himself for almost everything... his brothers death, for loving Julia etc. and the angst was too much.
The main characters love for each other felt too forced, and the why and how of why the hero fell in love with the heroine and her with him is rather mysterious/unclear.
Uncommon profession or hobby for the heroine. (for the time period.)
Kind of interesting characters but they lacked some dep ⭐⭐ 2 stars.
➕ What I liked :
Uncommon profession or hobby for the heroine. (for the time period.)
Kind of interesting characters but they lacked some depth and needed to be a little bit more developed and not so repetitive.
Interesting side characters. (The heroes group of friends.)
➖ What I disliked:
Repetitive.
Repetitive character descriptions. (especially about how handsome and tall/big the hero is.)
Some parts felt unfinished and disjointed/jumbled.
Anachronistic. (a bachelor auction for charity in 1850 London. Etc.)
Slow-paced/dragged.
Thin and boring plot.
Formulaic and predictable.
The main characters are kind of formulaic in how they are written/portrayed …. it would be much more interesting and add depth if the there was more variety in appearance/looks.
The heroines father and step-mother.
Lacking depth and development of the main characters. (backstory etc.)
The chemistry and romantic build up was lacking and unconvincing.
Rather good friendships between the heroine and the other female side characters.
A OK hero.
➖ What I dislik⭐ 1.25 stars.
➕ What I liked :
A Curvy Heroine.
Rather good friendships between the heroine and the other female side characters.
A OK hero.
➖ What I disliked:
The heroines parents were emotionally abusive and neglectful/indifferent.
The heroines mother more or less starved her daughter/encouraged her daughter to starve herself.
And the heroines mother intentionally and “unintentionally” body-shames her daughter.
The heroes father was manipulative and despicable.
The heroine was written rather stereotypical/one-dimensional. (The heroine is curvy/plump and insecure, but also having/making the heroines size (plump/curvy) be her entire personality is stereotypical/one-dimensional.)
The cover is mediocre and not representative at all…. The heroine is a curvy/plump woman…. The cover shows a thin woman on the cover…. Not at all like the curvy/plump heroine described/portrayed in the book.
The heroine was too insecure/self-conscious about her body. (self-deprecating, internalized body/fat-shaming etc.) The heroine is also self-deprecating about her freckles and her hair color.
Lacking chemistry and unconvincing romance.
Too anachronistic.
Formulaic and verbose.
Disjointed. (Too many stray storylines) and a rushed unsatisfying ending.
Too little interaction between the heroine and hero, and too much focus on everything else.
Not any real character growth/character development (especially the heroine that regresses the growth she actually made)
The villains did not get the comeuppance they deserved....more
The story and the characters (most especially the heroine) were contradictory.
Too anachronistic.
Too much miscommunication and misunderstandings. (if they only sat down and talked things through as equals/adults …. at least once …. it would not be so over the top with the miscommunication/misunderstandings.)
Rushed and jumbled/nonsensical plot.
Not a believable couple (Hero= male chauvinist… Heroine=female chauvinist)...more
Too much of the story and the characters were contradictory. (Which makes for a jumbled and somewhat confusing read….. And things just didn't a⭐ 1 star.
Too much of the story and the characters were contradictory. (Which makes for a jumbled and somewhat confusing read….. And things just didn't add up.)
The chemistry and romantic build up was rushed and lacking.
The ending was weird and kind of nonsensical.
This story was too formulaic.
Rather flat characters that did not have any real depth to them.
Sensitive issues are written/handled in a rather light-hearted and thoughtless way. (emotional/psychological abuse, abuse, bullying, addiction etc.)
