I’m not really a fan of the colored pencil look, and some of these drawings - especially of the people - are kind of creepy. I like the concept of this: here’s some fish, the fish are going to sleep; here’s some kangaroos, the kangaroos are going to sleep; etc. I’m just not a fan of the way the art was executed. The book ends with a prayer for animals and “small things that have no words” which I liked though.

The illustrations are good, but I wish there had been more of a transition between day and night. The illustrations went from colorful for the day to black and white for the night with no in-between. There could have been some beautiful twilight art in there.
Nice little story though, and I like the religious undertones. Could be a good book for a religion or Bible study class.

A sweet book based off a Russian folk tale around the Russian proverb: “We do not love people because they are beautiful, but they seem beautiful to us because we love them!” I like the illustrations but the faces were a little creepy - especially little Varya who is 6 but looks 60.
The endpapers are really cool with a yellow background and images of peacocks, roosters, stars, cherries, roses, butterflies and onion dome churches. And those elements are worked in throughout the book - the cabinets have roosters on them, a dress has roses, etc. I like the use of pointillism too.

One complaint is that this is a book about the history of books and writing, and this is such an unbelievably ugly book - I’m surprised a little more thought didn’t go into the design of it. So ironic. Also, for the unbelievably high price, its pretty frustrating that all the photos are in black and white, especially when the color is an important element. It was especially irritating when Avrin would write about the vivid colors or the gold leaf or whatever, and it obviously wasn’t visible in the book, so I’d have to go to the internet to look up a color version of the photo. ...more

I’m curious how many of these rhymes were well-known when this book was published. I recognized a few of them, but many were new to me, and a few were a little different than I remember. The art was good but it really stays in the background. My favorite illustration is towards the end of the cat on a doily and it looks really different than the rest of the art in the book.

This is a nice little book about different boats and what they can and can’t do. The text is repetitive, and I like that it examines several types of boats. The drawings are detailed and fun to look at. It’s interesting looking at this now and several decades after World War II. There’s an emphasis on the submarine, warship and sailors. My favorite illustration is the one with the ship surrounded by a fence with zoo animals looking at it.
I think my most favorite thing about this book is the dedication: it’s for a boy named Timmy and his grandma wrote the story and his dad drew the pictures. I thought that was really neat! How cool to have your grandma and dad write a book for you - and as a bonus, it wins a Newbery Honor!

I enjoyed this but I think the audience is limited for it today. It’s a collection of Christian hymns and (most) are accompanied by a page or two description of the composer. I wasn’t familiar with many of the hymns so after a few pages I ended up searching for the music on the internet, listening to it, then reading the section on the song. That made the book a lot more interesting. The illustrations in this are really lovely and I love the one of the girl walking in the snow with a red scarf, and also the one of the little girl praying at her meal. This is a great book, but I think it would be more appealing to adults.
I love that the carrot patch from “Creepy Carrots” has a cameo in this! I really love Peter Brown’s illustrations. What a charming book! When I first picked this up, I didn’t think this was the right book because it doesn’t look like it was created in 1946. The art seems more modern, the story is short and to the point (for a children’s book from the 1940s) and it’s a small sized book.
I wasn’t expecting this to be a Christmas story, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect at all. This is the story of La Posada on Olvera Street in Los Angeles. Pedro leads the procession dressed as an angel and by singing. At the end there is a piñata and Pedro is hoping to get a music box in it.
This is a really sweet book, and the illustrations are wonderful. My favorite illustration is of Pedro hitting the piñata and all the colors are muted and gray / brown / black but the piñata is colorful and bright.
This book made me think of Nine Days to Christmas: A Story of Mexico because it’s also about a posada which is something I’d never heard of until I read that book. I love the art in this book!

I really like this introduction to the Virgin Islands, particularly St. Thomas. The light blue, dark green, yellow, brown and peach colors are perfect for this book. I love the illustrations! The one of Henry diving with the shark is by far the best.

I really liked this book! It was fun to read. Dulcy is never satisfied with “Things As They Are”. She’s given a doll, promptly loses it, and she starts to built the doll up in her mind of how wonderful it was and then she doesn’t want to play with her other dolls because she misses the doll she lost. I like how this book teaches the moral of being grateful for what you have and also a little of being more careful with your stuff. Dulcy is a little annoying (and spoiled) but overall I enjoyed this anyway.

I feel like I read this when I was younger, but I don’t remember which version. I enjoyed the story, but that mustard yellow color is terrible. I’m guessing it’s supposed to look like gold, but it doesn’t. I admire the talent it took create the linocuts, but it doesn’t appeal to me much. The front cover is disturbing to me and I realized it wasn’t just the yellow color, it’s also that Dick’s eyes are black orbs. Kind of creepy looking.

This is a really hard book to rate. I think the art is amazing. It’s so detailed and luxuriant and all-around amazing. The text is good, but I think you’d have to be pretty into Robin Hood to enjoy it. Which I’m not. I’m having a hard time believing this is a Caldecott book because it seems more targeted towards adults. It’s a neat book and seems really well researched though.
I love that Malcolmson and Burton both have introductions in the book which is somewhat rare (and even more rare in the 1940s). One thing I found fascinating was Burton wrote that she wanted to go to England to study plant life “but it was impossible for me to go there to study it directly.” I’m assuming it was because she was illustrating this book at the tail end of World War II, which was interesting.
This is a great book for die-hard Robin Hood fans, but it just wasn’t for me.

I think the story and the illustrations are great, but I could do without the yellow faces (which I think were just a sign of the times, especially as Kurt Wiese seemed really interested in China spending several years living there and writing several books about China.)
The story is really cute - Little Fish loves anything fish themed - his mom makes him a pair of fish shoes (one of my favorite illustrations) and he has a fish lantern. So his asks his dad, Big Fish, to buy him the biggest fish kite there is. His dad obliges, and soon after Little Fish takes hold of the kite, a big rush of wind lifts him off the ground. When Little Fish finally lands back on the ground, he asks his dad for the “smallest fish kite there is”.
A fun story, and I love all the bright colors in it.
