De no haber asesinado fríamente a su mujer y a sus hijos y a sus propios padres la historia real de Jean-Claude Romand sería tan banal como la de Lady Alroy. Durante casi 20 años fingió ser médico y trabajar como investigador para la OMS en Ginebra. Ni siquiera había terminado el segundo año de carrera. No tomó a nadie en su confianza. Cada mañana salía de casa fingiendo dirigirse al trabajo. Pasaba los días leyendo periódicos en un área de servicio o bien paseando por el bosque. No tenía vicios caros ni pasiones vergonzantes. Había suspendido un examen crucial y no había podido, no había querido completar los estudios. Un acontecimiento menor, fácilmente enmendable le había conducido a una vida hueca, sufragada por el sablazo periódico a las cuentas de personas que habían depositado en el toda su confianza. A eso y a, al menos, cinco asesinatos.
Como al autor del libro recuerdo que esta historia me llamo poderosamente la atención cuando salió publicada en prensa. Me preguntaba, sobre todo, que había hecho todos aquellos largos años. en las áreas de servicio de las autopistas. Ahora me doy cuenta, como el personaje de Kafka, de que la vida es tan corta que sorprende que de tiempo hasta para ir al pueblo vecino. Estoy seguro de que a Romand se le pasó en un soplo. Que como el Wakefield de Hawthorne que abandonó a su esposa durante 20 años para alojarse a la vuelta de la esquina no tenía planes preconcebidos y había incluso olvidado que su conducta era rara.
Carrère realiza un trabajo brillante. Evita tanto la excesiva cercanía al asesino (he visto que algunos comparan esta historia con el "A Sangre Fría" de Capote, Nada tiene que ver la honradez intelectual de Carrére con la sarta de mentiras enhebradas por el priápico Capote.
Lo que no consigue el autor y dudo que nadie, ni siquiera el mismo asesino pueda es responder a los porqués que encierra el caso.
La mayor: ¿Porqué asesinar a su familia cuando suicidarse hubiera bastado si quería evitar ser desenmascarado?
Mi impresión personal es que el asesinato de su familia es otra más de las mentiras de Romand. Carrèere señala en un momento del libro lo improbable de los planes de suicidio de Romand. Jamás contó con morir tras los asesinatos. Asesinó para cambiar una mentira: la del médico brillante por otra: la de la víctima trágica. Y una vez más consiguió engañar a todos. Tanto que al final cuenta Carrère como ha rehecho su entorno gracias a la generosidad ingenua de un grupo católico. Ha escapado una vez más a toda culpabilidad. ...more

La anécdota, parecía decir, es intrascendente. Y a mi me pasa algo parecido con Agatha Christie. Al final me interesan menos las complicadas relaciones familiares que casi nunca soy capaz de recordar y mucho menos la situación relativa de la silla con respecto del alfeizar o la hora a la que tal y tal personaje tenían una coartada.
Lo realmente atractivo en Agatha Christie es esa sensación de un mundo perdido, amable y acogedor, que probablemente nunca existió plenamente fuera de la literatura y en el que todos los personajes reciben o esperan legados, en el que en las casas principales hay valets de pasado dudoso, en el que las señoras se entretienen espiándose unas a otras con absoluta inocencia o jugando al mah-jong, en el que coroneles retirados ejercen de jueces de paz y dicen cosas como "bunkum" y "stuff and nonsense". En el que bellas señoritas se enamoran de famosos cazadores. Y no hay nada mejor para leer en un parque una tarde de verano tumbado en el cesped....more
