Difficult to rate this book NR wrote way back in 1986. Twenty-five years ago! Parts of it definitely dipped down to 3 stars, but others were excellent. At certain times the pacing is off. Neat to see the romantic suspense writer she will become, but hard not to compare it to the best of to her current work. I love a good treasure hunt and a diving story, so I’m going with four stars. ...more

★★★★✩ This one was fun! Susan Ericksen does another wonderful job of narrating Ms. Roberts’ story of a missing share of a $28 million diamond heist. It has all the required characters: the unsuspecting heroine propelled into a mystery maelstrom, the location clue uttered by a dying man, the sinister mastermind who wants it all, the loyal – and very pregnant – friend and co-worker, the unrepentant charming professional con – who happens to be the heroine’s father, and **sigh** the hunky southern insurance investigator who is above and beyond understanding of the heroine’s dilemma. Oh, and there’s a dog. :o) Predicable? Sure. Doesn’t make it any less fun. ...more

★★★½✩ Well narrated by Susan O'Malley, this audiobook by Ms. Peters is a nice little ghost story set in an old German castle with secret passageways, that eventually leads to a séance, then a treasure hunt. I liked the (brilliant) Vicky Bliss and her lover, Tony, well enough; I enjoyed their trying to “one-up” each other in their challenge, and that their sparing never turned mean-spirited. But, I’ll be honest and say I liked Amelia Peabody in her series more. What am I saying? I loved Amelia Peabody! In fact, the first of her series, Crocodile on the Sandbank, was one of my best reads this year. Still, I’ll continue with this series even if it is in first person narrative. ...more

★★★★¼ My first ¼ star “tacked on” rating. I couldn’t help it; this one just didn’t fall to the four stars level, but it wasn’t quite as smooth as Ms. Thomas’ better known works. Still, it is extremely worthy.
Westin McLain, the second of the Indianan brothers who have decided to move to Texas for the Reconstruction, first encounters Allie when he’s at his lowest and she reaches out to comfort him. Pretty heady stuff when you consider she’s caged as a wild girl, about to be brought on stage for a religious revival meeting.
The front of my copy has a quote by author Debbie Macomber that includes the word “poignant”. I’ve tried to find another word, but none covers this book as well as that one. Allie’s story is heartbreaking, and Wes’s approach to her healing is contrary to his nature, requiring him to do the majority of the talking, since she is practically mute. But he is also a torn man, tortured by war memories and a successful cattle enterprise that just slipped through his fingers via a stampede; does he choose to follow a treasure map with a time-clock ticking or try and find an abused young woman’s unknown family? The surprised in this story was my amount of compassion toward Wes as well as Allie.
Ms. Thomas is a master of character development, managing to make distinctly different personalities for each book, even her secondary characters. I love reading about the growth in her heroes and heroines – and the bloom of their distinctive love stories, all placed in the setting of a western action adventure.
Will these two terribly lonely people realize a priceless treasure can be found in each other’s arms? A given in a romance novel, you say? But how will they get there and will the reader believe the outcome? This one delivers that believable HEA, at least to this reader.
Definitely a good read. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series, known by both monikers: Texan BrothersorThe McLain Brothers.

★★★★✩What a delightful read! I was wondering if Ms. Thomas was going to turn this one around from its disastrous beginning, and she did! Making it worthy of its place in the Wife Lottery saga, one of the best western series I’ve read.
Lacy Larson is the youngest of the brides, the one wearing rose-colored glasses; so it is no surprise that she is confronted with the harsh realities of frontier life, some at her own insistence. But she can put up with anything, as long as she knows when it will end.
Captain Walker Larson is a cool, in control, career army man who follows the rules – the perfect solider – with no need for a wife, let alone one he believes to be a jail bird his misguided father rescued. Called back to Cedar Point, a small Texas town he long ago left behind, in order to be Lacy’s unwanted bodyguard, Walker swears he will be leaving in a month.
I love how these two go from dislike and distrust to finally trying to be “just friends”. But, in this author’s deft hand we see love blossom, even in the snowy dead of winter.
“You don’t mind this?” He moved his hand over her flesh.
“No,” she answered, closing her eyes and letting the pure pleasure of his touch wash over her.
“Because I’m your husband?”
“Because it feels good to have you touch me like this,” she answered.
“Me, or would any man do?” He watched her as if testing the waters.
“Well, the doctor’s too thin, the ranger’s too dirty, and the sheriff’s too old. I guess that only leaves my husband. You.”
And, the epilogue to this one was the perfect topping on any dessert, cold or not! Thanks goodness there is one more left in this wonderful series.

Though it has been a long time since I read the book (decades) and my tastes have changed, I still recently enjoyed the movie starring Michael Douglas Kathleen Turner. An excellent movie, and one that my ex-husband balked at watching back in the day. I asked him to give it a 1/2 hour and then set the stop watch. Low and behold, the 1/2 hour mark came exactly where the hillside gave way, they slide down the muddy slope, and Michael landed with his face right between Kathleen’s legs. LOL. My ex (still a good friend) wanted to see the rest of the movie. :-)

★★★★½ Loved this one. Why did I wait so long to continue this second in the Blades of the Rose series? It is a wonderful paranormal-romance action-adventure set in a stunning local: Greece! I enjoy a good “road trip” story, and this is one that takes place on the ocean. Seems to me to have more romance this time around than the first one did, or is that just my imagination? There’s certainly magic in the air, as well as on the sea. A delight!
I was as enchanted with the heroine, London, coming awake and aware of the world, as much as with the superhero, Bennett, realizing there really can be just one woman for him, especially if it is London. Bennett sure painted himself into a corner with his philosophy on the “three little words” and it was neat to see how Ms. Archer was going to get him out of it. Here is a hint: (view spoiler)[ [image] (hide spoiler)] Regardless, here are more pictures of the beauty that pertains to this story:
