What even was this? There was zero tension and NOTHING scary. I revel in all things scary and bloody, but this couldn't even have scared 6 year old me, who thought sharks lived under her bed and cried from fear during The Wizard of Oz.
I don't want to sound like I hated this because I didn't. But there was just ZERO that I liked about it. It was so short that I didn't have time to be bored by it, but something so brief should have some impact. Papap's Teeth just fluttered on past like an inconsequential moth. You may notice it, think hmmm, that's a moth, but then you go on about your day, the same as if you never saw it at all.

She's the only divine thing he's ever believed in. The only creature in this vast, cruel land who could kill him. And sometimes, in his loveliest dreams, he imagines she does.
If you haven't read The Poppy War yet, first of all what are you doing here? Because A) it's fucking amazing; a top tier trilogy and three of the best books i read in 2023. And B) it's kind of a prerequisite for these short stories.
These three tiny tales (or more like snippets from a moment in time) are all told from Nezha's point of view (and omg Nezha. I was so happy to have him back on my page, even if just for a few minutes.) R.F. Kuang released this at roughly the same time as book three, but I read it last. Which is mostly because I didn't know it existed. But, according to the Goodreads summary "It is recommended to be read after the first 5 chapters of The Burning God (Book #3)."
But I'm actually glad I waited and read it a few months after finishing the OG trilogy. I got to enjoy it as a special treat, a quick loving revisit to this world and these characters who I adore.

A short story set in the same 'universe' as Experimental Film, where an anonymous video sent to a pair of filmmakers has disastrous and far reaching consequences. A mix of articles, transcripts, emails, and police reports cobble together a serviceable enough short story. It's fine, not really necessary or as mesmerizing as Experimental Film, but an interesting expansion on an eerie concept.

3.5 stars. It didn't knock my socks off, but it still was plenty enjoyable. Not a bad way to spend a half hour reading at all!
