Edith and Hans Nelson are a newlywed couple settling in Alaska, working the land and searching for gold. Along with Harkey, Dennin and Dutchy they form a hard-working and efficient partnership, gaining plenty of riches in very successful season. Then the unexpected occurs.
This was a great Gold Rush short story and one of the finest I’ve read by Jack London. I especially enjoyed the discourse about life and living by the expected and unexpected. Also cool learning about Alaska’s involvement during the Klondike Gold Rush era. The plot was decently plotted and well carried out. Never saw the unexpected coming; and enjoyed plenty all the buildup tension between Edith, Hans and Dennin until the final resolution.
Overall a fine short story, with memorable quotes and moments. An almost-fav. Recommendable.
Recomendable.
A collection by renowned Jack London, all powerful god of the North and unmatched master of Gold Rush stories.
Wow. Well this wa The North Remembers.
A collection by renowned Jack London, all powerful god of the North and unmatched master of Gold Rush stories.
Wow. Well this was one outstandingly good collection, all of the stories being Good or better. I especially enjoyed “Bâtard”, “The Unexpected” and “Love of Life”, so very entertaining and memorable. The other two were good too, just not THAT good.
After reading that many Jack London’s short stories I feel it’s time now to tackle his full novels. I mean his short stories are great, almost always good, sure; but the more and more stories I read of the man the more I start to get the feeling he only plays a one string banjo, the Northern Banjo.
Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

Kink Mitchell and Hootchinoo Bill are two gold prospectors during the Gold Rush era, extensively traveling the lands in search for that elusive precious metal, without much success sadly. It all changes when they hear about a new mining-town called “Dawson”.
A reasonably acceptable Gold Rush short story; not good, nor bad, just ok, and add some. I particularly enjoyed the ending jab, and learning a bit about “Dawson”.
